    3. I also had ordered their book on BATES and found the information nothing but junk. I could have done a better job looking in the phone book (which had about 500 times more BATES listed than they did). I returned the book and am now being contacted by their collection department. 1. SYLVESTER BATES, b. 1811, Keene, NH?
    2. ACrowell
    3. My family history center's IGI has the following extracted birth record: BATES, Sylvester b. 1811 Keene, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire (no parents listed) Is anyone researching this Sylvester Bates? It seems odd to me to have an extracted birth record that only has a year, and I wonder whether it might have been "extracted" from a marriage license rather than a birth record. I have a Sylvester Bates in my ancestry, born 10-13-1811 in Hartland (Windsor Co)., Vermont, son of Sylvanus BATES (1778-1860) and Sophia CADY and if there are in fact two Sylvester Bates at that time, I think the New Hampshire guy's records are confusing my search! If anyone knows anything about either of these Sylvester Bates, please contact me. Andrea Crowell also: [email protected]

    3. From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Hullo to you all from down-under, I've been researching my BATES for 20 years, but this is my first encounter with the BATES mailing list! Considering the number of us scattered around the World it seems very quiet so I have brought out my old master blaster to wake a few of you up! This was written back in 1995, and has been published a couple of times. It is called "A Ten years search (Maybe I'll be lucky in 1998)' Where family researchers gather, they ask still trying to find your BATES? not waiting an answer, then they say, don't suppose you've found any 'Greats'? And I answer the wife of Captain Cook, nee BATTS was baptised Elizabeth BATES and the Guy Fawkes gang had a member, christened Thomas followed by BATES. But whilst I claim a descendant to be, of this Fawkesian namesake of mine. It is said with tongue in cheek, some-one will prove it's moonshine! In my sincere and honest endeavours don't think our name relates. In fact I'm beginning to worry that out there, there ain't no BATES. That no-one out there is aware that the surname BATES exists, newsletters, are read with concern, looking, hoping persists! That some-one else is looking for , that surname which is mine called BATES The GRD, one name studies are out, relatives, very bad straits. Yet surely somewhere, there is some-one, with that name, fairly common, called BATES. Please if you have it, no matter its source, please write so I know, I have mates! Back to Kingsclere, Ham, UK, one six eight three, yes, very good, quite an early date, and stuck, putting it mildly, oh, where are you, you BATES, you BATES, you BATE? They seek him here, they seek him there, that Fawkesian reprobate Jim. email [email protected]

    3. Rob, My Ohio Bates is in Central Ohio not Northwest. This is where my Bates line dead ends also. His name is Sylvanus Bates and though he was born in Vermont (according to the census) he grew up near London, Madison County, Ohio. His approximate birth year is 1812. He had several brothers, Zenus, Ansel, Elijah, and Asa. Sylvanus Bates married Eunice Turner, April 2, 1832. They had several children of which Edward Bates was my great-grandfather. Edward Bates served in the Civil War. I have not been able to find Sylvanus Bates death date or place yet (or birth place in Vermont either). Don't know if your Bates is related to mine or not. 2. The only Bates I have, that I have been dead-ended on for a while, is Jennie May Bates, m. in Stark County, Ohio in 1883 to John Perry Jackson. There is a possibility that her mother was Eliza Bates, but that is not confirmed. Anyone have a connection? Christy

Eliza was born in Newburyport, Mass., 10-27-1825, but may have lived at Keene, New Hampshire at the time of their marriage. I believe they were married in 1838 or 1839. Their son Norman Francis Bates was born Derby Center, VT, 11-6-1839. I could not find the marriage in Vermont. 3. Vickie and other BATES researchers, Our Bates family ancestor was Francis Marion BATES (b @ 1840) who went from Cherokee Co., GA to Lawrence Co., AR. Listing from Genweb re BATES 1850 census, heads of household in Cherokee Co., GA: BATES, F. M. 40 (age) GA (birthplace) 72 (household number) I think he is the father of our known ancestor but have not yet proven this supposition. This FM BATES, born in 1810, was about the only one on the 1850 census born in GA. We would like to make contact with others researching the BATES family in GA for possible connections and for suggestions as to where to look. 1. Civil War Bates'
    2. Bobby & Sue Bates
    3. Regarding the Bateses in the Civil War, our line had at least 2 who served for the North-- Stephen VanRennsaeler Bates (b. 1814, Otsego County NY) and his son Isiah V. Bates (b. abt. 1843, Newstead, Erie County NY). Both joined up out of Toulon IL; Stephen in Company H, 139th Infantry and Isiah as a Sargeant in Company B, 19th Infantry and later in the Elmera Rifles. Both were also listed as musicians for their companies. Stephen M. Bates (b. 1839, NY) served with MI's 1st Light Artillery, L Battery and died of disease at Knoxville, TN 25 Oct. 1864. There is also a C.J. Bates buried in the Batavia MI cemetery with the inscription of Civil War Veteran on his tombstone. These veterans are descendants of Francis Bates of Ipswich (b. 13 July 1627). I would appreciate any further information that anyone might have on any of the above individuals, especially on Isiah, who showed up in the 1870 Federal Census in Kansas but disappeared after that. Thanks in advance! Sue & Bobby Bates

    1. Bates in Civil War
    2. MR JACK BATES
    3. Thanks for posting, Julie. I didn't have any Bates with the Yankees, but I had one in the 13th Mississippi Volunteers. I did have an ancestor with the Yankees. In the 4th Cavalry, Missouri State Militia but he was Thomas Jefferson Cooper. You were lucky with your pension file. I found no such family info for my Confederae, Thomas A. Bates. His record was part of the "reconstructed" set authorized about 1912 by the government. There was precious little left of the official Confederate records by that time so it is amazing that they were able to put together partial service records which consisted mainly of muster rolls and mentions of wounded in action, "sent to hospital" etc. But it is certainly worth the effort to try for any military service or pension record, or "bounty" lists. The state of Missouri offered some bounty but I never was able to find out if it was cash or land. Thanks again for your thoughtful posting. Jack Bates
