    3. Hi cousins, I have had a genealogists nightmare, I have lost almost all my info. It is a very long and embarrassing story. (Also very frustrating, and don't worry, although I contemplated shooting my hubby, I decided he was too cute) The work of replacing my genealogy is daunting but if I hd to replace my jhusband that would just deter me from this important task of genealogy. :D Therfore, I decided to ask for help. My Bates ancestor is Margaret BATES. Married to Payne JOHNSON Pike Co Ky. One of their children was Uriah Washington JOHNSON. Margaret was the sister to Martin Van Buren BATES Any help would be appreciated. Besides it may save my Hubbys head.:D Grins, Kaye One never knows when one tiny piece will pull the puzzle together.

    3. This biography is from "Memorial and biographical record; an illustrated compendium of biography, containing a compendium of local biography, including biographical sketches of prominent old settlers and representative citizens of South Dakota..." Published by G. A. Ogle & Co., Chicago, 1899. Pages 436-439 OLIVER A. BATES. Among the many prosperous and prominent younger members of the farming community of Perry township, Davison county, may well be named the gentleman whose name introduces this sketch and whose farm comprises the northeast quarter of section 23. He is possessed of unbounded energy and enterprise, and has arrived at his present comfortable circumstances by the exercise of earnest industry and the strictest honesty. Mr. Bates is a native of the Hawkeye state, born in Fayette county, June 7, 1871. His father, Oliver Bates, who was born in Ohio, opened a lumber business in Buchanan county, Iowa, soon after the birth of our subject, and continued the same until he moved to Dakota. The mother, who bore the maiden name of Mary Sanders, was born in New York state, May 8, 1850. Oliver A. Bates, the subject of our sketch, is the eldest of a family of seven children, all of whom are now residing in Davison county, whither the whole family moved in 1880. The father filed a claim, the farm occupied by our subject since the death of the former. The place is in a good state of cultivation and is highly improved, being furnished with an artesian well, barn and outbuildings, including a new and conveniently arranged granary. The residence is octagonal in shape and is two stories high. Among his farm pursuits Mr. Bates adds that of a breeder of fancy poultry. Mr. Bates is truly a Dakotan, and is a young man who is known to be frugal and industrious, a man who plans well whatever he attempts and carries out his plans with a spirit and determination that would be commendable even in much older men. He is undoubtedly a man with a future, and one to whom his fellow men may look for a leader and a power in the upbuilding of the better interests of the community. In politics he has always used his elective franchise in the support of the candidates of the Populist party ever since he attained his majority, and has been active in the promotion of the local interests of that organization. His fellow men have seen fit at different times to entrust to his care the duties of some of the local offices, and he has served in the capacity of chairman of the township central committee, assessor of the township and chairman of the school board. Mr. Bates was united in marriage Octobers 7, 1896, to Miss Caroline Stowell, a native of the state of New York, born June 13, 1875. They are the parents of one child, Myron Rodell, born November 22, 1898. On another page of this volume will be found portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Bates.

    3. This biography is from "Memorial and biographical record; an illustrated compendium of biography, containing a compendium of local biography, including biographical sketches of prominent old settlers and representative citizens of South Dakota..." Published by G. A. Ogle & Co., Chicago, 1899. Pages 1070-1073 HON. ISAAC L. BATES, a prosperous and influential farmer residing in Garden Prairie township, is one of the pioneer settlers of Brown- county, and has been closely connected with the financial and social development of that region. A portrait of Mr. Bates appears on the opposite page. Mr. Bates was born in New York July 12, 1835, and was the fourth in a family of six children, three sons and three daughters, born to Jairus and Zarina S. (Phelps) Bates. His father was a farmer by occupation, as was also the grandfather of our subject, Rufus Bates. The family was an old New England family. When our subject was four years of age the parents made a home in Buffalo, New York, and later moved to Ottawa county, Ohio, where the father engaged in farming. The country was then unsettled, and they located in what was called Black Swamp. After five years they moved to Sandusky county, Ohio, where they resided one year. The mother died when our subject was but six years of age, and about two years after her death he was given to the care of strangers, remaining with them three years. Others of the family were also away from the home, and finally they reunited and the father moved the family to Wisconsin about 1848. He rented land four years in Walworth county, and then moved to Waushara county, where our subject grew to manhood. After attaining his majority he left home and worked at the cooper's trade one summer, and in the fall of 1858 located in Michigan, where he worked by the month until August, 1861. At the first call for three years' troops he enlisted in Company C, Third Michigan Cavalry, and was among the first to enlist for three years' service. He was sent to St. Louis, Missouri, and his first battle was at New Madrid, Missouri, after which followed Island No. 10, first battle of Corinth, and was in the thickest of the fight at Iuka after which was in active service and many skirmishes. After the expiration of his three years' service he reenlisted and was finally mustered out in September, 1865, after a service extending over four years and seventeen days. Returning from the war, Mr. Bates engaged in farming in Michigan, and in 1882 he visited South Dakota and homesteaded the northeast quarter of section 13, township 121, range 60, and in 1883 returned to his homestead and "bached it" during that and the summer of 1884, then rented the place during 1885. In 1886, he moved his family to Brown county, South Dakota. He is now the possessor of a well improved estate consisting of six hundred and forty acres, one quarter of which is in the name of his son. He engages principally in grain raising, and is interested to some extent in the raising of stock. He was one of the first to enter the locality as a settler, and his shanty was the first in that vicinity. He hauled all supplies from Andover, and encountered other pioneer experiences. Mr. Bates was married in Michigan, February 22, 1866, to Miss Emily L. Adams, a descendant of President John Adams. Mrs. Bates was a daughter of Horace H. Adams, and was born and raised in Michigan. Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Bates, as follows: Franklin A., born September 6,1867: Sarah S., born September 18, 1869; and Minnie L., born June 14, 1876. They are all married, and the son is a railway mail clerk. Mr. Bates has been a member of the Grand Army of the Republic for the past twenty-five years. He is prominent in the affairs of his county, and is an ardent worker for reform. He was elected on the Populist ticket to represent Brown county in the state legislature of 1890-91, and was one of the first of that party to act in that capacity. He was foremost in the Farmer's Alliance and was president of the organization for three or four years. He attended the first Populist caucus, and was a delegate to the first Populist convention held in Brown county. He has held numerous township offices, including assessor in 1890, and four years justice of -the peace. His earnest and efficient work has gained him the confidence of the people and he is willingly accorded the rank of a leader in his community.

He has always been active in civic affairs, and in 1914 assisted in reorganizing the Sioux Fulls Commercial Club and was elected its president. He has been president of the Minnehaha County Bar Association, and, for a number of years, has been active in the South Dakota State Bar Association, having held important committee positions, including the chairmanship of the committee on legal reform in 1914. He is a member of the various branches of Masonry, being a thirty-second degree Mason, a Knight Templar and a Shriner. He is also affiliated with the Modern Woodmen of America and the Ancient Order of United Workmen. On February 5, 1891, Mr. Bates was united in marriage to Miss Grace Chester, of Elmira, New York. They are the parents of two sons, Chester Bronson Bates, who is now engaged in the practice of law with his father, and Lawrence Russell Bates, who is a district agent for the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company.
