    3. I am trying to find the first wife of my Sylvester BATES. I think he was born 10-13-1811 in Hartland, Windsor Co., VT to Sylvanus Bates and Sophia CADY. The first wife of Sylvester is the mother of my ancestor Norman Francis Bates (b. 11-6-1839, prob. in Derby Ctr., VT) and Georgianna Bates (b. 6-19-1843 in Boston). Sylvester's second marriage was probably in 1850, so I assume the first wife died sometime before 1850, perhaps in Boston. I found a possible clue in the IGI when I found a marriage of a Sylvester Bates to Almyra Dunham on 1-20-1828 in Middletown, Middlesex Co., CT. This Dunham family apparently has ties to Westfield, Orleans Co., VT and to Windsor Co., VT. Can anyone help? Thanks-- Andrea Crowell ACrowell@email.msn.com also: 75330.517@compuserve.com

    3. Bill & the list-- Several years of The Bates Bulletin were bound into one volume that covers 1907 thru 1932. I think the Bulletin was published quarterly and each contains a great deal of genealogical information, usually organized by what Bates researchers considered to be the main immigrants (i.e., Clement, Elder Edward of Weymouth, etc.) This large bound volume is available through the Circulating Library of the New England Historic Genealogical Society from which NEHGS members can borrow. I also found it at the Sutro Library, a wonderful genealogical library in San Francisco; perhaps inter-library loan can obtain it for you from them. It really is very entertaining to read! 2. Wayne, When you get answers to your questions, I hope you will fwd. them, because I would like to know, too. And that 1918 Bates Bulletin sounds very helpful. I was in Hingham last fall but was just beginning my research, didn't know where to look, and missed a whole lot!. So I am eager to go back, and I wish you much luck in your search.. Jane Brumbaugh

    1. Re: [BATES-L] for those who know Hingham
    2. Does anyone know how many of our Bateses went to Onondaga and nearby counties in NY? I am descended from James Bates (son of Solomon and grandson of Joshua) and his son Benjamin, and I keep being surprised at how many times Onondaga County comes up. James and Benjamin were in the area about 1800, having moved from Chesterfield, MA, and I would like to know more about them. The Town of Pompey Historian wrote back to me that Benjamin, Eunice (probably widow of James and stepmother of Benjamin), and Phineas (Benjamin's brother), were still there in 1820. Benjamin and his wife died and are buried near Fairport, NY, she in 1850, he in 1851. Beyond that, information will probably involve a recommended researcher for $50, to investigate deeds. Two questions I have are: Do you recommend that I go ahead and pay for this? If I were to go there myself, to Pompey, Fairport, and the area, where would be best to go to get information? I am thinking of making this trip in September. Thanks for any guidance any of you have. (Related family names are Anthony SOULES who married Benjamin's dau. Emily in 1819, and Hannah KELLEY, Benjamin's wife.) Jane Brumbaugh

    3. I'm planning a trip to the Boston area in a few weeks, and will visit Hingham, Bellingham, Mendon and surrounding areas. I'm wondering who can guide me; a) is Joshua's house (built 1695) on S. Main St, Cohasset still standing? The 1918 Bates Bulletin says it was at that time. b) the Bulletin also indicates that Joseph (Joshua's father) was Sexton of the parish from 1693-1682. I wonder if this is the "Shipps Church" which is identified on my map. Anyone know? c)What are the 'obvious' Bates things that I sould see while I'm in the area? I have mapped out a plan for the Bellingham area, and hope to locate the farms (or at least the properties) where some of them resided and worked. *Clement, Joseph, Joshua (Hingham-Cohasset-Bellingham), Isaac (Bellingham), Laban (Bellingham), Peter(Mendon), Jervis (Mendon), Julius. She was the daughter of George V. and Tennie Walker Bates of Big Fork, Arkansas. She was married to Lemuel (W.L.) Huddleston and moved to Hill County in 1880 with several children including an infant, Winton Bates Huddleston. Her last child was probably Dottie Huddleston who was born in 1892.
