Hi Everyone! I'm new to your list and am hoping that this will help. I have hit a brick wall! My lineage is as follows: Edgar Alfred Bates b. 11/6/1921 Elyria, OH d. 10/24/1986 Oakland, CA > Harold Sage Bates b. 5/20/1897 Elyria, OH d. 1/19/1972 Lorain, OH > Alfred Merton Bates b. Avon Twp., OH d. 4/17/1944 Elyria, OH > Alfred Bates b. 4/7/1829 Bennington, NY d. 6/6/1914 Elyria, OH > Daniel Staples Bates b. 6/30/1804 Bennington, VT d. 4/1/1896 Elyria, OH. This is were I hit the brick wall. I cannot find Daniel's birth record. I have checked Bennington Co. Town Hall and the historical society as well as the birth records in Montpelier, VT. I do believe that Daniel's parents were Thomas Bates and Zilpha Staples. I have a copy of their marriage record from Shaftsbury, VT. The reason I believe they are his parents is because I have a copy of Daniel's brother's marriage certificate listed them as his parents. Based on a story written by Daniel, his father (unnamed in the story), died when he was 8 yrs. old, which makes his date of death abt. 1812. However, to date, I have been unable to find anything regarding Thomas' death. Can anyone help or provide direction for me. Thank you. Terri

These excerts were taken from the Bradley Tn. list. I hope someone can use this. Wanda Bates Smith Journal & Banner Cleveland, TN February 11, 1909 Until new date given. This was sent to me from another list and I thought someone might find it helpful. Missy (DULANEY, BROWN, MOORE, DORSEY, SENTER, BATES, TAYLOR, CURRY) WWI Draft Applications Update Prior to the US's entry into WW1 (approx. 1917-1918) every male between the age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft. The information found on the card was provided by the individual himself. The registration cards vary in information depending on the individual draft board. But by and large the cards include: The full name of the person (this means first, full middle name, any additional middle names and last name); the current address of the man; his age; his birthdate (some include his place of birth); whether he is a US citizen or a naturalized citizen (some ask if his father was a naturalized citizen and his father's race); his race; his occupation; where he is employed (name of employer); address or location of employment; name and address of his next of kin; some cards ask if the man is married or single and how many people he supports. The card is signed by the draftee. On the back of the card his physical description is noted: Height is broken down by short, medium, tall although some cards give the actual height in feet and inches; Build by slim, medium, stout although some cards list actual weight along with the build; color of eyes and hair; any deformities or injuries are listed (such as one arm missing, blind in one eye, etc.); the name and address of the draft board and the date. When these original cards were transferred to the East Pointe NARA branch the LDS spent about 3 years microfilming these cards. There are hundreds and hundreds of boxes and the LDS opened one box at a time and filmed them -- in state order. However, within each state the cards were filed by draft board, not by county or by draftee. This makes the searching of the microfilm difficult to say the least. The good news is that the Friends of the National Archives took each box after it was filmed (and checked) and sorted all of these thousands and thousands of cards into -- state and then COUNTY order and then in alphabetical order by surname and put then in new boxes. The Friends deserve all the kudos we can give them for this monstrous task. So ... rather than spending hours and hours searching the LDS microfilm you can order copies of the original cards from NARA. if you know the county your ancestor lived in between 1917-1918. And BTW - Ancestry.com lists WW1 Draft cards in their searchable data bases, however I know for a fact that there are 22 cards for the surname WHITE found in McIntosh Co, OK and Ancestry only gave me 4 of them so don't depend on that site. I was told yesterday that some reps from Ancestry had visited the archives a couple of weeks ago to talk about filming the cards, took one look at the hundreds and hundreds of boxes and simply left. For copies: Send a letter requesting copy(s) to: NARA Southeast Region 1557 St. Joseph Ave East Point, GA 30344 In your letter be sure to say you want copy(s) of the WWI Draft application Cards. Include the name of your ancestor and his race, the state and the county. If you want copies of ALL of the cards with a given surname, ask them the cost of the copies and send a SASE for them to let you know the copying cost. In your letter be sure and say you want a copy of the FRONT and BACK of the card. Be sure to send a SASE for the return of you copies. The cost for the copy is 50 cents - 25 cents for the back and 25 cents for the front. If you only want one copy send a buck and say the difference is to be given to the Friends of the Archives, because after all they did all this wonderful hard work for you <VBG> And feel free to pass this on to any of the lists you are on.

Greetings all. I am looking for information on my great grandmother, Bettie Bates. Bettie Bates married Frank McMenzie of New York, around 1900. children: Ernest McMenzie (grandfather) married Ida Virginia Ryle 16 Oct. 1926 in Hooven, Ohio. This is all the information I have to go on. I am hoping that by McMenzie not being a very common name, that just maybe it will ring a bell for one of the Bates families. A Very short story: My mother, Betty Virginia McMenzie Marsh said that (dear old dad, as she called him) left home when she was 5 and her sister was 2 years old. All trace of the Frank McMenzie and Bettie Bate lines were lost to the family lost. Thanks so much, Ernie
I am still looking for any information I can find on Martin Bates (b:1817) and Margaretha Rauschkolb (1837). I would assume they married about 1857. Possibly, from Massachusetts. They would have then gone to somewhere around Syracuse, New York. Their children were: William (married Emma) Nettie (married Harry Bristol) Mary (My greatgrandmother who married John Hesley in 1890 Anna B. (married Samuel Nash abt. 1881) John (married Carrie) Can anyone help me. I am pulling my hair out! Happy Hunting! Sooz
I'm tryin to find an A.C. BATES born ca 1770 in UNKNOWN....I know he married Fannie Elizabeth Bray 22 Oct 1895 in Tishomingo Co. MS....family says that he was killed in an iron works explosion in south TN....This was before 1905 because Fannie remarried in 1905........Was A.C. part NA? I know Fannie is Cherokee and I can't FIND anything at all about him...Seems like after the marriage record they just fell off the earth, or hid.....In Fannie's 2nd marriage(to my great grandfather) they had to live on "Catholic Hill" where she was passed off as "Italian Catholic"... I hope someone knows something about this A.C. BATES. Thank you, Lexy
It was wonderful to hear from Wayne Olsen that there may be a connection for our Nelson A. Bates to his Bates family from Jefferson County, NY, but unfortunately we still aren't sure how to proceed to find Nelson's parents and siblings. They don't seem to have gone to OH with him. We know that Nelson was born in Jefferson County, NY in 1831, married Serepta R. Parrish in Lorain County, OH in 1852, and is listed with her and their children on the Lorain County, OH Federal Census reports for Lagrange Twp for 1870 and 1880. Some of their children were born in Toledo, Iowa in the 1860s, so we are searching for records there.. We are still hoping someone out there has more information for us. If we find anything more, we will post to the list. Thanks so much for all your information, Wayne. It would be great if we could link to your Samuel Sr and George Bates. Patti Bates
Patti, Sorry I don't have any connection info for you - I'm also a descendent of a Jefferson County Bates family that has driven me fits, so I understand your frustration. Considering there weren't too many Bates in that sparse area at that time, seems plausible that we're connected somehow. My ancestors were Samuel Bates and Samuel Bates Jr, who had migrated to Houndsfield, Jefferson County NY in the fall of 1802, although Samuel Bates Jr evidently was there in the summer of 1801 to get land and build a house. Previously, they had lived in Brimsfield, Hampden Co, MA - I'm still looking for the parents of Samuel's father, George Bates (b. about 1709; m Rebecca Dick or Dix Dec 6, 1735 in Brimfield). Samuel Jr's children were Almira, Merrick, Asa, and Mary, born between 1801 and 1811... I descended thru Almira. Samuel Sr's children, many of whom probably also moved to Jefferson County, were Chloe, Rufus, Moses, Eunice, Samuel, and Kezia, all born between 1763 and 1775 in Brimfield.... I don't have info on children of Samuel Sr, so could be a possibility that Nelson descended from one of them. One of Merrick's children, Chauncey (b. 1825) moved to Crocker, Iowa. There were Banks and Bates families living in Charles City County, Virginia, but I've been unable to find a match. I have quite a bit of information on the BATES family of Fairfield County that Id be happy to share. >Can someone out there tell me why Elisha Bates (son of Benjamin & Hannah >Green ) was "Disowned" in 1837? Evelyn and Eva, I have meant to jump in on the subject of the Bates Family of Old Virginia , whose reunion some of us attended in June. My trip continued into Pennsylvania, and I am still dealing with all the information and papers I gathered. The B. F. of O. VA is in articles in the last two Bates Bulletins, and the president is Michael Teague, whose e-mail address is: << MTeague275@aol.com >> The family's home page is at: << http://members.aol.com/Lramrtn/batesva.html >> The speaker at that reunion was Genevieve Skinner, a descendant of Elisha Bates, and one of them could perhaps put you in touch with her. She spoke about Elisha as having very strong principles and opinions, but I cannot rmember specifically about his being "disowned." For anyone researching Virginia Bates ancestors, it cost me only $5.00 to join this organization of nice people. They have a librarian, too. Jane
Looking for someone research the Marion Bates Family- Wife Elizabeth-Thomas S., Eliza J., Samuel and Calvin. This was from the 1880 Census. I would like to know if there were any other sons. I am looking for a Bates from Ms with these sons, Robert, Marion and Paul. Any information would be appreciated. Janice in South Texas Bsand1@aol.com
Hi cousins, Can someone out there tell me why Elisha Bates (son of Benjamin & Hannah Green ) was "Disowned" in 1837? Also the name of his last child which was born on Aug 2, 1818. I am working out of the "Bates Family of Old Virginia and Beyond", and the name of the child is not legible and nothing is said of him being disowned, except the date. Thanks for your help, Eva
I've been researching my Bates lines all summer...the Bates that originally came from Staplehurst, Kent, England in the 1600s and early 1700s...then to Frittenden. Anyone a member of this group? Barbara Lewis lewisb@vitrex.net
Looking for information on parents and siblings of Nelson A. Bates, born 1 March 1831 in Jefferson County, NY, died 11 Feb 1893 in Cowley County, KS, married Serepta Parrish, daughter of Lewis and Eda Gaylord Parrish, on 17 June 1852 in Wellington, Lorain County, OH. Jefferson County researchers say they have no record of a Nelson Bates, so the family must have moved before the 1840 census, but I haven't been able to find them in Lorain County at that time. Nelson and Serepta had eight children: Arthur, Darwin, William Pitt and Charlotte, born in Ohio, and Frank, Edgar, Alice and Ada, born in Toledo, Black Hawk, Iowa. Darwin, Edgar and William owned the large Bates Brothers plant nursery in Floral, KS for many years. I'm hoping someone on this list is related to Nelson or has a lead for me. Patti
