I bought a pretty little Victorian business card at an antique store recently. The information on the card is: "JOSEPH L. BATES 13 1-2 Bromfield Street Photographs, Views, Picture Frames, Illuminated Cards, &c., &c., &c." There is no city or state listed, so I was hoping to find out where his business was located. It's a very pretty card about 4 1/4" x 2 1/2" and is adorned with lovely flowers. Looks Victorian. I am a Bates descendant, although this isn't an ancestor that I know of, but the name caught my attention! Julie

Dolline, sent this for all to enjoy. Thanks, Dolline! We have it bad! Pass it on! Missy My apologies to all who have a fit if any funnies, etc., are posted to the Lists. Please smile a wee bit! << GENEALOGIST'S DISEASE > Warning: Genealogy Pox (Very contagious to adults) > > Symptoms: Continual complaint as to need for names, dates, and places. > Patient has a blank expression, sometimes deaf to spouse and children. Has no taste for work of any kind, except feverishly looking through records at libraries and courthouses. Has compulsion to write letters. Swears at mailman when he doesn't leave mail. Frequents strange places such as, cemeteries ruins, and remote desolate country areas. Has strange, faraway look in eyes. > > NO KNOWN CURE > > Treatment: Medication is useless. Bill, My Zadock Bates Jr. was born 1796, Bennington, Vermont. Zadock Bates Sr. born 1766, location unknown. Most of the imm. to Bennington Co., were from R.I., I have concentrated on that area. The family was in Plattsburg, N.Y. by 1810. Moved west from there. Jackie
Vermont Bates ??? I was attracted by the mention of a Zadock Bates. My gr gr grandfather was named Zadock Bates HOLMES. He was in Conn. abt 1800 period. I had assumed a possible connection to a Bates family due to the common practice of naming children with mother or grandmother's surname. Zadock was married into the BANKS familt of Fairfield,CT, Any connection ? Any descendents move to CT in the late 1700's ? Bill Staples
My gggrandfather was Alexander Bates b. 1846 Georgia. He married Mary Margaret Williams Sept. 9, 1875 in Texas County, MO. I believe his parents were Alexander Bates b. abt 1813 South Carolina and Elizabeth unknown b. abt 1825 Tennessee. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Beth

Terri You are not the only one who hits brick walls in Vermont, worst state to research. My Zadock Bates born Manchester, Bennington, Vt. 1797, father Zadock, b 1766. They went to Plattsburg, N.Y. before 1810, went to Ohio, short time, in Michigan by 1821and then to Crawford Co., Pa. Zadock Sr. died there 1834. Seems to have some connection to the Daniel and Francis Bates, in Bennington, who were from R.I. There was also a David Bates in the land records in Manchester, near by appeared and disappeared same time frame. Any scrap of info. would be helpful. Jackie
