I am looking for any information about Sarah Fleming BATES. She was born 23 Oct 1797 in VA. She married William Nathaniel BARNHILL. She died 8 Feb 1869 and is buried in eastern Winston Co., MS.
Bates Family Historians, No one has claimed the 1799 Bible of Elihu Bates, 1772-1821, that I promised to donate to a descendant, so I mailed it off today to the National Bates Association. As promised, I am enclosing below a transcript of what is written in the Bible. After that is a transcript of a letter found between the pages. Some of you will recognize Elihu as a member of the "Bates of Weymouth" as described in this excerpt from the 1929 Bates Bulletin: ----------- 48. ELNATHAN 5 (John 4, 3, Edward 2, 1) was born at Weymouth Mass, April 23, 1736; married Ruth, daughter of Samuel and Experience (Paine) Hunt, intention April 11, 1760. ... He died Feb. 27, 1820; she died Oct. 28, 1824. Their children were: ..... vi. Elihu, Aug. 28, 1772; married Mary, daughter of John and Sarah Leach of Boston. ----------- No children of Elihu were given in that paper. The entire "Bates of Weymouth" family can be found in the Broderbund World Family Tree, V.8, Tree#0196. If you would like a photocopy of the Bible inscriptions, send me a SASE. Any further correspondence about the Bible should be addressed to: Sandy Bates <SBates1011@aol.com> She is the Membership Chair and the Librarian for the National Bates Association. You may be interested to know that I received 117 messages as a result of advertising the Bates Bible. Many are second or third messages from the same person. Some of you may get two copies of this message, because I am posting it on BATES-L and also sending it to those who wrote to me. George George W. December 5, 1999 I posted this message on BATES-L on November 26, 1999. ---------- I have a large Bible printed in 1799 with inscriptions about Elihu Bates, 1772-1821, and family, apparently of New England. A few personal notes, pressed flowers, etc. are between the pages. A descendant of Elihu Bates can have it for the cost of shipping. ----------- I am disappointed that so far no proven descendant of this Elihu Bates has claimed the Bible. If you have a dead-end ancestor (parents unknown) with surname Bates and having birthdate between 1790 and 1810, please contact me to see if your ancestor is one of Elihu's children. George Anderson
Looking for the marriage of Mary Ann Bates to Edward Stow, NJ 1820-1840. Can anyone help? Dottie Lewis
Hello--I'm new to the list and would like to introduce myself as the great great-granddaughter of Tophelia (or Mary) Bates who married Peter Grielen (or Greland? Name change). Tophelia was Peter's second wife. I think both were from Germany--and ended up in Massaschusets, probably Boston, where my great-grandfather, Peter J. Grielen lived in 1901. Does Tophelia sound familiar to anyone? Debbie Dale Washington state

Frances, Your Almira Bates Lothrop sounds suspiciously like she could have been a niece of my Almira BATES (b. abt 1800 Brimfield, MA, m. abt 1820 Thomas Shaff in Hounsfield, Jefferson Co, NY, d. 1880 Brodhead, Green Co WI). Shortly after Almira and Thomas married, they moved to Hannibal, Oswego Co, NY and had at least four children there between 1822 and 1832 (Samuel Shaff, b. Jul 14, 1822; Josiah A.Shaff, b. 1827; Rebecca Shaff, b. Aug 3 1829; and Lorenzo Dow Shaff, b. Jul 22, 1832) before moving to Lake Township, Milwaukee Co WI in 1835. Thomas Shaff drowned the next year, Almira remarried a neighbor John Douglass in 1838, moved to Decatur, Green Co WI in 1853 and then to Spring Grove, Green Co WI the following year. Almira BATES' parents were Samuel BATES (b. Feb 18, 1773 Brimfield, MA, d. Feb 13,1813 Hounsfield, Jefferson Co NY) and Sally Houghton (b.Jan 16,1780 Wales, MA). They married in Wales, MA Jan 13 1779 and had the following children in addition to Almira: Moses Merrick BATES (b. Jul 10, 1801 Brimfield, MA); Asa BATES (b. 1807 Hounsfield, NY); and Mary BATES (b. Apr 17, 1811 Hounsfield NY). Moses Merrick BATES had a daughter named Almira in 1839 in Hounsfield. I don't have Asa's wife's name, but have info from Jefferson Co Bates descendents that Asa moved to WI and lived with his sister Almira BATES after his wife died. Don't know anything about Mary BATES. Have much more info on the ancestry of Samuel BATES and Sally HOUGHTON if you think they might have been the grandparents of your Almira. I am looking for information on my great grandmother Almira Bates Lothrop born 1829 near Oswego, New York, died 1916 in Wisconsin. Almira married John Wirsing Robinson in 1860. She was 6 feet tall. The notes from my grandfather mention Martin Van Buren Bates, the Kentucky Giant, but I have no idea what the connection is, or anything else about her family. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Hi listers, My name is Ian Bates of Gippsland Victoria Australia. This is going to be a long shot, but I can see no other avenue for me to take at present. My grandfather Percival George Bates was b. 1893-5 supposedly in Dorsetshire Eng. according to his WW1 enlistment papers. On his death in 1963 his wife gives his pob as Sommerset Eng. I recall my mother once telling me that she thought he had been b. in India as his father George Bates m to Catherine Annie Jones was in the Brit. Army and stationed there at the time of Percy`s birth. OK, well a search of all three areas has drawn a blank. To make matters worse, family story goes that for 6 generations there was only the one child born to each Bates mrg and ofcourse it would have been a male child each time to carry on the name. With that in mind I`m not holding out much hope of ever connecting with other living relatives. <g> short of my own sibs <ebg> So in short, do any listers recognise the above names ? Perhaps someone has come across them in their own research. As you would all be well aware; this aint just some brick wall ! It`s got grease smeared on it and it`s reinforced with 1" reo !!!!! Any help at all would be greatly appreciated and I`m always open to constructive critisism and suggestions. thankyou for taking the time to read this Batesy Ian Bates Gippsland Australia Reseaching:- BATES-Somerset Dorset-1895 WATSON-Aberfoyle-1875 HURN-Norfolk&London-1827-1851 BRUMFIELD-LONDON-1829-1851 GIBSON-Glasgow-1870 & Airdrie-1895 GIBSON & MUNNUCH/MONACH--Carnwath & Fife 1830--1850`s STARK & CLARKSON Carnwath 1850`s VINECOMBE Channel Islands & Devon 17-1800`s
