    1. [BATES-L] Albert William Bates
    2. Carniman
    3. I need help with a lost Bates, I am looking for Albert( William?) Bates Born 4/7/1913, I know that a lot of you are looking back in the 1500-1700's but we are stuck on Albert Bates. Here goes my, GGgrandfather George Bates (B.about 1884)Married Annie Dickens around 1911-1912. She was born in Whiteplains N.Y. George and Annie had two children that we know of. George E Bates Sr/Jr.? (b. 9/08/1908) in Greenwich Conn. Albert came next. George E. Bates had two children with his first wife Mary Danko, they are George E.Bates Jr./III ? and Maryann (Curtin) Bates. The reason for the question marks in the names is that we have a picture of my Grandfather that has written on the back "George E. Bates Jr." now as far as we knew he was George E. Bates Sr. that's how he signed his name. But his fathers name was George E.Bates so that would make him a Jr. and my father George E. Bates would be the Third, But my birth certificate says George E. Bates III. And my son's says George E. Bates IV. One of the reasons we are looking for Albert is the obvious reason he's a Bates, the other is it is rumored that He received the Family Bible when his parents died (date unknown to me) it was also rumored that he had children and they lived around Ossining ! N.Y. My grandmother (George E. Bates Sr./Jr.?'s second wife Midge is still living and she says that my Grandfather never talked about his brother Albert I think there was some problems between them. Years ago I asked my Grandfather about our roots he said we were from England, My father on the other hand (who doesn't know anything about his Uncle Albert) says we came from Ireland. I have been looking for a while and keep hitting dead ends.I found an Albert Bates that is around the time my great uncle was around but he was a member of Machine Gun Kelley's Mob( that would be a reason not to talk about him) or maybe he is related to the New York Nightclub owner "Pegleg" Bates. As he was black, and we are Caucasian that might be another reason that my Grandfather might not talk about Albert. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks George E. Bates III

    3. Hello, I am new to this list, but since it's so quiet I thought I'd post this Ahnentafel. If anyone should see any errors or have anything to add please comment. I pieced this together from several sources, some perhaps unreliable. I wonder about the Bates-Bate difference in the 6th generation. 2. I am interested in finding info on Mary BATES the wife of Homer SLAUSON. Calculating backwards from her grandson's birth, I would hazard to guess that she was born abt. 1730. Her daughter Sarah Slauson was married to Solomon BROWN of Poundridge New York heritage. Please let me know if anyone is interested in this line. My second Bates is also, Mary BATES but who married in 1662 ABRAHAM AMBLER, I. Her parents were Robert and Susannah Smith Bates of Stamford CT. Robert Bates Candee

    3. The following information was sent to me concerning the Bates family and a connection with Pocahontas. I had never seen it before and can't verify: (This is probably old news to long=time researchers, but I have not worked on my Bates line very much so I wanted to check it out, with people in the know.) Generations: 1. Pocahontas and John Rolfe 2. Thomas Rolfe married Jane Poythress 3. Jane Rolfe married Col. Robert Bolling 4. John Bolling married Mary Kennon 5. Jane Bolling married Richard Randolph 6. Francis Randolph marrried John Jones 7. Frances Randolph married Joel Halbert, Sr. 8. Elizabeth Halbert married William Hill 9. Thomas Hill married Catherine Shropshire 10. Hannah Hill married Robert Patrick Bates 11. Henderson Wesley Bates married Eliza Elvira Jarrett Bourland (I have definite info on my line from here on)

My great great grandmother was Eliza Bates, the sister of Henderson Wesley Bates. I've done a lot of research on our Bates lineage and from what I have pieced together, perhaps the only questionable part of the line back to Pocahontas is whether or not Frances Randolph was actually the daughter of Richard Randolph and Jane Bolling. I've read articles which seem to say that may be in doubt, but I've done no first-hand research into it. Further, I had through (and I guess, hoped) that our Bates line went back to Clement Bates in Hingham, Massachusetts. I've spent three vacations in Hingham compiling much information about those Bates families, but there, too, I can't quite prove that our ancestor, Joseph Bates, the father of William Bates (who lived in western Virginia), was actually the Joseph, son of Clement. Hope this is helpful. I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have. Jerry Brooks jbrooinfl@aol.com Tampa, FL --part1_35.b1f176.25c4ceaa_boundary--

I have her birthdate as 2-26-1656 (per the Genealogies of the Early Families of Weymouth) and that she died 7-6-1748 in Hingham. Do you have her parents? 1. Re: [BATES-L] Keene NH Bates'
    2. ACrowell
    3. Wayne & the list, I have a BATES connection to Keene, NH around that time. My Sylvester Bates (b. 10-13-1811 Hartland, Windsor Co., VT) married his second wife Eliza Ann MORRISON (b. 10-28-1824 Newburyport, MA) in Keene on 5-30-1850. The marriage record states Sylvester was from Ludlow (or Woodstock?) VT. (Unfortunately when the Vital Statistics of the Town of Keene were compiled circa 1905, Sylvester's marriage license record generated a "published" Keene birth record that made its way into the IGI, confusing us for decades!) One of my worst dead ends is Sylvester's first wife, married by 1839 and apparently dead by 1846. I don't know why Sylvester married his second wife in Keene, although it is not too far from areas of Windsor County, Vermont. My best lead is that she may have been a DUNHAM from the Orleans County area of Vermont. This Sylvester Bates descends from Elder Edward Bate of Weymouth, Massachusetts: Edward1, Edward2, Joseph3, Joseph4, Sylvanus5, Sylvester6. His family removed from Middleborough, MA, to Windsor County, VT, with Joseph4 around 1787. Do you know the father of Jervis? I'm wondering if perhaps his family migrated from Vermont to New Hampshire and might be connected to my group of Bates.
