I need help finding the father of James Kelton Bates, who was born in Alabama in 1844. He was in the Tallapoosa County, AL census in 1850 along with his mother, Elizabeth Johnson Bates Clopton and her second husband, Martin Clopton. Elizabeth and James's father divorced sometime prior to 1848. There were Bates families in Autauga, a neighboring county. Does anyone have ancestors in that part of Alabama?
I read with interest your BATES reply below. While some of my information appears the same I find we also have different information. For instance you noted that Henry BATES (died 1478)and wife Agnes had only daughters. I show only Thomas and James as children. Could you send me your BATES tree in GED or FTM? If you would like mine please advise. The line I have goes to John Bates b. 1797 Scituate RI married to Hannah Smith in 1823 then sons Emmett Lowell BATES and Harvey J BATES born 1829 Boonville IN married to Margaret Bennett in 1850 Warrick Co IN and earlier to Elizabeth Hubbard. I may be able to answer some of Sandra's questions on Scituate RI Bates. Please forward this to her. Loren Hoboy ||lorenhoboy@pobox.com||. -----Original Message----- From: Wilma T. First, I have printed a Bates tree for my children and sent them for Christmas. However, my tree was made written by hand by a Cyrus H. Bates of Cohasset, who got wills made in England by Col. Theodore Cornelius Bates of Worchester, MA . Cyrus, who died in 1926 took the wills and made the tree. However, his own family didn't intermarry with the Bates until about 1700's. If I am repeating, forgive, but I wanted you know how authentic the history is back to 1415. Now Theodore Cornelius Bates gave Cyrus his copy of the wills. Cyrus was not really that interested in these old data, but he had our Sir Thomas on the edge of his tree which was on microfilm, and I had to move it over to the left from the crack and put our line on the right side of the tree. Some comments: I do not know where you got your information, but I have never seen Margaret, Sir Thomas' wife, with the maiden name England, unless you were just identifying her. The sons of Sir Thomas and Margaret are John and William. Evidently William either died or had no issue. No record there. Sir Thomas had two sons and John Bate is our ancestor. Will proved in 1522. John's sons were Andrew, died 1532, and Thomas, died 1530. There is too much to look up, but this is the basic tree. The Agnes you mentioned was the wife of Henry, died 1478, and they had only daughters. On my tree and in the wills Henry left his heirs to his relatives, and I won't go into that. Andrew's wife's name is not on the tree, but I will tr y to look it up on the wills. If Andrew died in 1532-33, his wife could not have died in 1522. Andrew's children were *John, Thomas, William, Simon, Joan, and Katherine. You were mostly right. *John's children were *James, married to Mary Martine (I don't thnk there is an "e" on the end) but will leave it for now. Other children were Thomas, Andrew, and Mary. These children were by his first wife, Mildred Ward. You are exactly right. *Clement and Ann Dalrymple and his family got to Hingham with their children, but Benjamin was born in Hingham. *James was married to Ruth Lyford. You are right. I won't go over the children. But that is where my line diverges from yours. I have nothing on John Bates of Scituate, and from there on it is all yours. And I think you have done a wonderful job of completing your line. I have had so many responses to the letter to David, including some with Solomon and Benjamin, but this is all I can do now. I'll try to send you the e-mail from these other people who wrote to me. You did not tell me the name of your grandfather or father. It might be good for me to have. My grandfather, Dr. Smith L. Bates, was born in 1850 in Indiana and moved to settle in Adrian, Mo. where he practiced as a horse and buggy doctor for years. I was born in Butler, Mo. 60 miles south of Kansas City, where we moved when I was 7 years old. My mother was Wilma Estella Bates Thiele and married my father, Dr. George H. Thiele, born in Kansas. Helo. I am looking for information on these Bates. Judith Bates (1678-1745) dau. Samuel Bates and Lydia Lapham Bates m. Job Gibbs 20 Feb 1666/7 in Hingham, MA. Ca. 1700 Ann Bates married Henry Sanders; they lived in the section of Plymouth called Agawan Plantation. Judith and Ann may have been sisters. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Stephanie in Denver
Just curious about your extensive Bates data. You seem to have a great amount. I see some of the line in Conn. Do you have any connections in Fairfield County to Holmes or Banks. My Holmes line traces back to a Bates Holmes in late 1700's. He had a sone who he named Zadock Bates Holmes. Bates Holmes was married to Mary Banks and Elizabeth Banks ( not at the same time). Have always felt that Bates was likely surname of a Holmes or Banks spouse but have yet to find connection. Have no info on Bates Holmes' parents. David, Your Ahnentafel is very interesting to me, as I descend from Clement but have not found as many names in the previous generations. Bates ancestors, yes, as the FHC and other histories went back to John (or Thomas, they said), b. 1415. Where did you find his wife (Agnes)'s name? And Thomas's wife (Margaret or Mary Caulkins)? I had only Margaret for her, showing b. ca. 1440. I'm sure my date of b. for Andrew was wrong, but where did you locate 1494 as the date? (I am not doubting, just would like to share your sources.) As to James B. Bate (gen. 6), do you know where the "B." came from? Then to Clement's wife Anna: All sources I have seen gave no surname for her, so I hope that Dalrymple is right, as I really would like to know. And did she come from Lydd? I am descended from Emily, Benjamin, James, Solomon, Joshua, Joseph, Clement... James (Sr.) and his son Benjamin (b. 1770, not to be confused with James's brother Benjamin) and Benjamin's siblings moved westward to Chesterfield, MA, and I am looking for birth records of the children of Benjamin Hannah (Kelley) Bates. The 1922 Bates Bulletin lists them, but does not cite specific documentation. Does anyone know any more about them? Thank you for any help you can provide. Jane Brumbaugh
Hi Billie! David, I too intended to answer to tell you to tell you that Edmund Bates didn't have children so isn't anyone's ancestor. My cousin, Ken Bates, referred to by Billie, found the wills of Edmund and wife, Elizabeth Leveritt and found that they didn't have children. They were thought to be the parents of my ancestor, Edward Bates of Boston but that is incorrect information. Billie is an expert on her and your line and I only know the Edmund/Edward part. Good hunting! Mary Jean Bates Evans
Dear David, I got your e-mail, but my computer froze up so I am trying today. I don't want to make this too long, but you and I have the same line down through James Bate and Mary Martin to Clement. However, the children of James and Mary do not coincide with the ones I have. They are James, Clement, Joseph, Benjamin, Samuel, and Rachel. I have just finished a family tree back to John (1415-1445) and they are authenticated with wills copied by Col Theodore Cornelius Bates of Massachusetts, and put into a will by Cyrus H. Bates of Cohasset. I must tell you that the Edmund and Edward are not in this line. Ken Bates of the Bates Association has been looking for them for a long time, but I am not sure he ever solved the mystery. He is a Mormon in Salt Lake and is very able to find these facts. His e-mail is KNBate@Lgcy.com. He thought we were cousins, then the Edmund-Edward connection proved we were not. But he came down to help me set up the PAF and also helped me fill a gap of of Laben, son of Laben. I got my DAR because of this, but I haven't talked to him for a long time. Mary Jane Evans of the Bates Ass. also was hunting this down. What I have is straight back, probably to Sir Gerard Bate of Yorkshire, Lord Mayor of London in 1248, but I don't have that confirmed. comfirmed. Good luck. I am way down in Victoria, TX, but come from a long line of Bateses. My mother was a Bates. Billie North

I am interested in finding info on Mary BATES the wife of Homer SLAUSON. Calculating backwards from her grandson's birth, I would hazard to guess that she was born abt. 1730. Her daughter Sarah Slauson was married to Solomon BROWN of Poundridge New York heritage. Please let me know if anyone is interested in this line.
Please change my e-mail address to cocolane@ayrix.net. Thanks Sonya Mims
Here are my comments. I have basically the same thing with a few differences and/or additions noted within your original message marked with "**". There is no new research here. This info is taken from databases and is not verified. Kozmo > Hello, I am new to this list, but since it's so quiet I thought I'd post this Ahnentafel. If anyone should see any errors or have anything to add please comment. I pieced this together from several sources, some perhaps unreliable. I wonder about the Bates-Bate difference in the 6th generation. > > David Glasser > > Sit tibi copia, sit sapientia, formaque detur, > Inquinat omnia sola superbia si comitetur. > > > Descendants of John Bate of England (1415-1445) > > > 1 John Bate 1415 - 1445 > ... +[?] Agnes 1421 - **new info > ........ 2 Thomas Bate 1440 - 1485 > .............. +Mary or Margaret Caulkins, [?] 1440 - > ...................3 John Bate 1460 - 1522 **bdate new info > ......................... +Margaret **new info > ..............................4 Andrew Bate(s) 1494 - 1531/32 ** also 4 Thomas > .................................... +Joan or Catherine [?] **new info > .........................................5 John Bates 1521 - 1580 **also Simeon, William, Katherine, Thomas, Joan. **I still have "Bate" here > ............................................... +Mildred Ward 1526 - 1577 > ....................................................6 James B. Hi, I am looking for anyone with information about Charles Sims Bates. I went to 5th, 6th and part of 7th grades at College View school on College St. in Denver, CO with Charles Bates. He lived on Federal Blvd. there. That was about 1945-46. He would have been born around 1934-35. We were in the Highlander Boys together. I would like to talk to him again as we were good friends. If you have any knowledge of a Charles S. Bates, please let know. Thanks Don L. Fox DonFox@cybertrails.com

Is anyone researching the Bates family in the Channel Islands of either Guernsey or Jersey. My ancestor John Bates (1774 Guernsey) arrived with wife Mary (1780) and family in Philadelphia in 1817 aboard the Venus. Sincerely, Rob Risko
I need help with a lost Bates, I am looking for Albert( William?) Bates Born 4/7/1913, I know that a lot of you are looking back in the 1500-1700's but we are stuck on Albert Bates. Here goes my, GGgrandfather George Bates (B.about 1884)Married Annie Dickens around 1911-1912. She was born in Whiteplains N.Y. George and Annie had two children that we know of. George E Bates Sr/Jr.? (b. 9/08/1908) in Greenwich Conn. Albert came next. George E. Bates had two children with his first wife Mary Danko, they are George E .Bates Jr./III ? and Maryann (Curtin) Bates. The reason for the question marks in the names is that we have a picture of my Grandfather that has written on the back "George E. Bates Jr." now as far as we knew he was George E. Bates Sr. that's how he signed hi s name. But his fathers name was George E.Bates so that would make him a Jr. and my father George E. Bates would be the Third, But my birth certificate says George E. Bates III. And my son's says George E. Bates IV. One of the reasons we are looking for Albert is the obvious reason he's a Bates, the other is it is rumored that He received the Family Bible when his parents died (date unknown to me) it was also rumored that he had children and they lived around Ossining ! N.Y. My grandmother (George E. Bates Sr./Jr.?'s second wife Midge is still living and she says that my Grandfather never talked about his brother Albert I think there was some problems between them. Years ago I asked my Grandfather about our roots he said we were from England, My father on the other hand (who doesn't know anything about his Uncle Albert) says we came from Ireland. I have been looking for a while and keep hitting dead ends.I found an Albert Bates that is around the time my great uncle was around but he was a member of Machine Gun Kelley's Mob( that would be a reason not to talk about him) or maybe he is related to the New York Nightclub owner "Pegleg" Bates. As he was black, and we are Caucasian that might be another reason that my Grandfather might not talk about Albert. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks George E. Bates III
