Hello, I am new to the list and am looking for info on Elizabeth "Bouncy" Bates. She would have been born around 1850. Her parents names are unkown but her her siblings names were: Nathan, Johnny, Tommy, Luther, Henry, Janie, Lei, Sally and Molly. She married Noah Smith. It is said that Noah left her to raise the children and tend the farm alone. After which she never remarried. Together Noah and Bouncy had the following children: Lei, Nathan, Janie, Johnny, Luther, Mary, and Queen Luvenia. They raised their children in Laurens Co., Georgia where Bouncy died. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. April@oppcatv.com
Hello fellow Bates listers: Here is part of a message from a cousin (not a Bates) who lives in Batesville Arkansas. My ancestor, Samuel Bates was born 9 Aug. 1760 in Haddam, Conn. His father was probably David Bates from Haddam. At the age of 16, he enlisted in a New Hampshire regiment & served 3-1/2 Yrs. before returning to Vermont. He married Abigail Willard 1 Jun. 1786. Their children were: Clarissa, Lindamind, Henry Willard, & Ira B. My gggrandfather, Henry Willard Bates, was born 4 Feb. 1794, in Randolph, Vt. In 1812 they moved to Kendall, Orleans Co.,N.Y. A fire in the 1890's in Kendall, destroyed all birth & marriage records there. I am trying to find Bates descendants to obtain family records.

My name is Jean THOMAS BAKER and I connect to the BATES family through my great-grandmother, Mary Ann BATES, who married Seth THOMAS. We have traced our line back to the BATES line which has been mentioned lately on this list. Our line goes backwards in this manner, Mary Ann, William,John William, John, John, Comfort, Caleb, Joseph, Clement, James, John, Andrew, John - I hope this posting is not against any rules of the list. I just wanted to give an idea of why I have joined. JEAN
Evelyn, Yes, Deborah Whiton who married Solomon Bates on May 1, 1730, was the dau. of John Whiton and Mary Tower. But she must have died soon after, for Solomon married Deborah Studley on Dec. 14, 1732. She is the mother of all Solomon's children, according to any record I have seen. The Whiton lineage and that marriage is recorded in George Lincoln's History of the Town of Hingham, Mass., Vol II. But, Lincoln has D. Whiton moving to Chesterfield with Solomon, and I don't see how she could have. He fails to mention Solomon's second marriage in the Bates familly section, also. I suppose this is how the FHC record got it wrong, also. I'm descended from Solomon & D. Studley, but I've been interested in what could have happened to Deborah Whiton, and can't find anything. The other interesting thing is that Joshua Bates married Rachel Tower, Dau. of Ibrook Tower and Margaret Harding. According to Lincoln, Mary was Rachel's younger (by 2 yrs.) sister. Those intermarriages did complicate things. This has been interesting. Please write again. Jane Brumbaugh
Hello Everyone, This is probably a long shot but I am going to try. I am looking for anyone who may have information on my gr-grandmother. Her name was Evelyn Bates. She was born in Alpena, Michigan. She married Fred LaForge on July 9, 1918 in Alpena. I know that she and my gr-grandfather were divorced in Los Angeles County in 1933. Evelyn's residence at the time of the divorce was Long Beach, CA. I would appreciate any information anyone may have as my grandmother, their daughter, was put up for adoption in 1925. Because of the adoption we have no idea whatever happened to her mother. Gayle Tabiadon
I know I have read somewhere about the naming of towns all over the country for some of the Bates family. Short memory, and can't find the information now. Does anyone know who Bates City, Missouri was named for and anything about it? I just joined the BFOV in Nov 1998, so don't have the Boosters farther back that that. Thanks for any help, Eva

To Loren, Wilma, David, Sandra and all the others interested in the Scituate Bates.' Emmitt Lowell Bates was my gggrandfather. I have his father as John E, and before him, Reuben, John and Samuel. Now.....for my puzzle. My aunt, now deceased, spent most of her life as a professor of English and English lit. Her hobby, which became full-time after she retired, was genealogy. She wrote in a letter to my mother that "we are all from James, brother of Clement, who came to Boston on the "Elizabeth" in 1635. " She also mentions a Gurley Basil Bates of Pasadena, CA who had been writing to her of the Bates. I have not been able to make the connection between Samuel (who I have as being born in 1682 in Bristol, RI) and the James, from whom I am also supposedly descended. Would James have been Samuel's grandfather, perhaps? I sort of figured that James was too old to be considered Samuel's father, but in reality, I suppose he might not have been after all. (However, in making these calculations, I have been assuming that James came with Clement; which I shouldn't do....assume, I mean! Also, in telling about Clement's passage, she may just have done that as some form of reference; perhaps not knowing details of James' immigration? Anyway, if anyone can help solve my puzzle or shed ANY light on the situation, I'll more than welcome your contributions! I can match you down through Solomon Bates (the first Solomon, son of Joshua and Rachel (Tower). Solomon's son James, b. 1743, is my ancestor, and I am trying to find out what happened to him after he "removed to Chesterfield," also when his son Benjamin left Chesterfield and where Benjamin's daughter Emily was born, in 1797: in Chesterfield, or westward, perhaps Pompey, NY, or en route there?? The book which Liz kindly offered, about Chesterfield, names James's children but stops there. Perhaps we've correspnded before on this ?? Thanks, Jane
have been watching with interest the recent letters with info about John Bate b-25 Oct.,1415 in Lydd, England. I follow down the line pretty much agreeing with your information. My branch leaves yours with the family of Clement and Ann. My line descends from their son, Joseph who was born in Lydd, England and came to America with his family on the ship "Elizabeth" in 1635. This is what I know about my line. Is there anyone out there with the same ancestory ? *Joseph Bates b. 1630 - d. 30 April, 1706 - m.
