    2. Gloria Marcum
    3. This is my last hope. I have searched every census record and tax list I can find. I can't find my great-grandparents. Benjamin Bates m. Mariah Allis Ramey Nov. 9, 1888 in Wise County VA. They disappeared off the face of the earth until in 1910 Allice Bates shows up in the Knott County KY census age 42 as a widow with the children. In the 1900 census of Knott Co two of their children (Ditha Ann-my grandmother and her brother John Wilson) are living with a Hall family. Where in the world were Ben,Allis and the other children between 1888 and 1910? Nobody knows, I don't know, they don't know. I need help. Please!!!! Gloria

    3. I have no idea at all what area Thomas and Hubbard settled in. That was one reason I was asking if anyone on the list had and connection with this family. Thomas' father was from Virginia, died I believe, in Washington County. Some of Thomas' descendents may have wound up further south, in GA or NC. That is one thing I am trying to figure out. ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Thursday, September 14, 2000 6:34 PM Subject: Re: [BATES-L] BATES/DUNCAN > What State? USA? What county? 1. [BATES-L] John A. BATES of North Carolina
    2. Carol
    3. Have hit a BATES brick wall. I have a John A. BATES born about 1796. He died 1860/1870 in Cherokee County, NC. He was married to Margaret "Lou" CUNNINGHAM born about 1801 and died after 1870, also in Cherokee County, NC. I had thought his name to be John Alexander BATES, but believe now that it is possible the name was John Augustus BATES. I've found in the TVA records of graves relocated during their hydro-dam project, called the Davidson-Bates cemetery. Buried there is an Augustus BATES, no date of birth, died 1862. Buried beside him and presumed to be his wife is Margaret BATES, no date of birth, died 1875. William F. BATES is said to have been a son of John and Margaret, and there is a William F. buried in this cemetery. It is possible that he was connected to the BATES line in Bradley County, Tenn. I have also heard that a lot of people in Cherokee County came from an area called Bates Cove, but cannot find out where that was located. Any help, ideas, etc would be truly appreciated.
