The first message posted to the list was accidentally sent before I could finish it, so I resent the whole explanation & statement. However, as we all know, nothing ever works out the way we plan it it, so GUESS WHAT???.......... I haven't seen the very explanatory 2nd list posting come through yet. One more try. (and watch everything show up at once) When I was young, my father would say, our name was spelled B-O-T-T-Z, that's black dutch (german). I assumed from that statement that we were german on daddy't side, too. Through the internet, I joined with several cousins to track our BATES and what we could learn of them. They all agreed our BATES to be English (British, which also included the Irish), and disregarded what I told them of my father's comments. The statement I referred to my original partial post was found in a publication sent to me by one of my new found cousins; something he had apparently overlooked. In "Century Review of Maury Co, Tenn, 1807-1907", D.P. Robbins, states............ Thomas BATES is the son of Jesse & Melinda BATES. Melinda is dau of John BATES. All of VA and of German descent. Jesse BATES is son of William BATES, and grandson of James BATES who married Elizabeth TUBB. We have assumed these BATES' were English. The statement allows the reader to believe that ALL of the people listed are of German descent. Mr. Robbins never went on to explain anything. We can find nothing else on this John BATES prior to this listing. There is also no mention of a wife....just he and daughter, Melinda. It is a strange statement as, for Jesse to be of german descent, his father and grandfather would also have to be the same. Incidentally, William BATES' wife was English and Cherokee, and James BATES' wife, Elizabeth TUBB was English (possibly Welch) descent. So, no German there. It would have to be the BATES line or else D. P. Robbins was way off. Hope this gets through. Between my goofs, the listserves problems and my computer having a mind of it's own, there's no telling what goes out of here. However, anyone else out there with Bates ancestors they think might be German? Marlene Bates Johnson [email protected]
I'll be happy to send you mother a b'day card from the association. But in answer to your question about what do you get your mother etc, I'll tell you that I had a birthday this week (65) and my 3 children and spouses rented a house at the beach for a week for all of us. The best present ever! I was thrilled. We had a wonderful time and got home tonight..MJ
In a message dated 97-06-14 15:52:06 EDT, you write: << Subj: BATES--of German Descent Date: 97-06-14 15:52:06 EDT From: [email protected] Resent-from: [email protected] To: [email protected] BATES -- I have them from England & from Ireland, so far. >> Bates City, Missouri was founded after 1865 by Theodore Bates, a German. In Lower Oklahomas (like San Antonio, TX) there bunch of Bates (various spelling) of German descend.
Sorry, someday I get it right, and stop sending off half finished postings. Anyhooooo. I had written << BATES -- I have them from England & from Ireland, so far. In my search for those elusive BATES ancestors, I ran across an interesting statement, regarding our family. >> In D.P. Robbins' Century Review of Maury Co, Tenn, 1807-1907, he states that our Jesse (Grandson of James Bates who married Elizabeth TUBB) married a Malinda BATES. Malinda is dau of John BATES. All are of VA and of German descent. I do not know that this means the John BATES family is of German descent or all of them are of German descent. Is anyone out there researching these lines, or do you have BATES' of German descent in your lines. If so, was the name always BATES or was it BAATZ, BOTTZ, BOTTS, BETZ, BATZ? We had assumed mainly that our BATES was English/Irish. We have been hung up on James BATES/Elizabeth TUBB for years. Now, there is this little piece of inviting information that has been overlooked for 20 years. Hmmmmm? Anyone? Marlene in OK [email protected]

Dear Cousins, My mom, Bernice, is turning 70 next week (June 21). Well--What do you get your mom who needs nothing? So...I thought it would be exciting for her to receive a ton of birthday greetings. If you have a moment, a stamp, and an interest in helping me be creative, please drop her a birthday note. If you're a descendant of either Clement Bates or Robert Bates, you're a cousin (that's most of us!). But if you're thinking this is too excentric, just delete and accept my apology. Here's the address; Bernice Bates Ambler 18 Tahoe Court Toms River, NJ 08757 Thanks for helping me make this a 'fun' day for my mom. Wayne S. Ambler

Hello everyone! Seeking information on Marie BATES. She was from around the Hartford, Blackford Co., Indiana area. Born in the late 1800s or early 1900s. She married Orlo Pierson. Together they had 4 children. The 2 girls she gave up for adoption when they were 18 months and 4 yrs old. The girls names before they were adopted were Dorthy (sp?, 18 mos.) (Hazel Colshower sp?, her adopted name) and Thelma L. (4yrs.)( Mary Jane Flatter, her adopted name). They kept the boys. She then married a man with the last name of Stone. I have no info on Marie Bates family or Orlo's family. Family would not talk about them as they were very hurt by the history of the adoptions. Does anyone have any leads for me to follow??!! Thank-you, Laura :o)

Dear Bates researchers; If you are brand new to this Bates discussion list, I'm sure you've already seen one of these messages. For all of us who have been automatically transfered from the Maiser list to Rootsweb, the information here is new although very much like Maiser. You should PRINT THESE INSTRUCTIONS to use as a quick reference, but always feel free to contact me directly should problems arise. From: [email protected] (by way of "Wayne S. Ambler" <[email protected]>) Welcome to the BATES mailing list! You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to BATES as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode are given below. 1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to [email protected] that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text. 2. How to subscribe. YOR ARE ALREADY SUBSCRIBED IF YOU HAVE THIS MESSAGE, but for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to [email protected] 3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to [email protected] to discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" to [email protected] to start receiving digests. 4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to [email protected] It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both. I hope this answers some of your questions, and as new information comes in I'll send it out to the group. Happy hunting.... Wayne S. Ambler [email protected]
I don't recognize any of the names mentioned but I feel that some of the people we are researching came from the same community. My Sara Bates m John S. Carson 10 May 1810 in Baldwin Co, AL. Their son, Nathan Franklin Carson m Amanda Roe Curtis. Amanda's paternal grandmother was Sarah Hicks who was b 10 Nov 1757 in Sussex Co, VA and d 12 Sept 1810 in Washington Co, AL. Sarah Hicks m Samuel R. Curtis c 1778 in Sussex Co, VA. He was b 18 Jan 1751 in NC and d 24 Jan 1846 in Marengo Co, AL. Is there something here or just coincidence? If you have information to share, please write. Thanks Anne Nelson [email protected]
