No, Melissa, my Francis Marion Bates stayed put once he got his family to the vicinity of DeKalb, Kemper Co., MS to a little settlement known as Big Oak. There is a very good chance your Marion's full name is also Francis Marion. It was a name southern parents revered because of the courageous and daring exploits of the popular Revolutionary War General called the "Swamp Fox". He led the Red Coats a merry chase through the Carolina swamps in hit and run missions which demoralized the British soldiers accustomed to a more structured form of battle. He was of French extraction and his Huguenot grandparents had been driven from France in 1685 and settled along the Santee River near Charleston, SC. Most males are never comfortable with the name Francis so they choose to be called Marion. As for having only land records of your Marion Bates, that means there must be tax records and there is a great possiblity he may have homesteaded land. I don't remember when the first homestead act was passed, but I urge you to check the Bureau of Land Management CD-ROM disk for Arkansas public land sales. It will include homestead land patents. So why is that good news? When you find an ancestor who homesteaded, write for ALL the records of that homestead--loose papers, letters, etc. You may strike gold and find correspondence from your ancestor to the land office requesting an extension of time due to crop failure etc or explanations of an absence from the land. I found a wealth of info about my grandparents in their homestead file. Good Luck! Jack Bates [email protected]
Thanks, Wayne. I keep trying to find MY Matthew BATES, b.1790, VA. That is not much to go on! I picked up his trail as a land purchaser for cash in 1825 in Tuscaloosa, AL. Later he turns up in the 1840-1850 Kemper Co, Mississippi census and apparently died there after 1950, because his wife was listed as a widow in 1860 census living with son-in-law, last name GEORGE near Philadelphia, MS. Have never found burial info for Matthew or death date. Matthew Bates, b. 1790, VA is my most likely suspect for a 3G G'father, and most likely father of Francis Marion (F.M.) BATES, my 2G G'father, b. AL 1818 (per one census) or b. GA 1818-9 per another. I have worked out a scenario which fits several people into the family as siblings , but have no documentation. The few facts I have: Matthew's wife was a Jane (unknown), b. N.C. abt 1796. He had a daughter named Hannah Louriana, called Lani/Loni who married B.N. George with whom Jane lived as a widow. Would be wonderful if someone has a few scraps of info which fit this picture. Thanks. Jack Bates [email protected]

James BAITS married Elisabeth TUBB in Rutherford Co NC in 1782, she the daughter of William TUBB. (It seemed that everyone after that spelled their name BATES.) Is anyone out there researching BATES who has found it spelled BAITS/BAITES? There were others with this spelling, in North Carolina, Virginia and, I believe, New York. I would really like to find the parents, etc., of this elusive ancester. Appreciate all help. Marlene in OK [email protected]

John, are you a descendent of Reuben Bates or John M. Bates?
Someone must have Abram as a son, sibling, divorced husband, uncle?? I believe him to be Quaker. He married Mary Ellen Preston (Ella) of Dover, Dutchess Co. NY in 1876. They moved to KS, then finally to CA. Was he an orphan? Why did Ella's parents not like the union? Did he own a bookstore in Poughkeepsie? Family lore says he was in his store when she entered. He said to a friend, "see that girl who just came in? I'm going to marry her" so love at first sight and all that. He was pretty old for a first marriage so maybe he was a divorced or widowed man when he met her. Gads, perhaps he was married! Anyway, for some reason, he was not appreciated by her family. Maybe being a Quaker did it. On one census it is stated that both his parents were born in PA. Any help is much appreciated. I cannot believe that this man's family is such a secret or mystery when we know so much about Ella's going way back. Looking for further ancestry of Mary BATES, b 13 Jul 1678 in Lynn, Ma. m to Samuel ELDREDGE in Yarmouth, Ma 25 Jan 1703. Possible father was Robert Bates, but do not know for sure. Any suggestions welcome. [email protected]
Amy, I am mailing you the copy of the TAG article that documents the facts and dispels the myths of the Clement/Edward/James story. Edward was NOT brother to Clement and James as we thought for many years. The article I'm sending you will show the true lineages of Edward Bate & Susanna Putnam as well as show what does and doesn't check out in the records. Watch your mailbox. Does anyone on the list have information regarding: Ann BATES b. 1561? in England, m. 1599 to Stephen BACHILER of Wherwell, England Appreciate any assistance you can provide. Shelley

According to an informal family history that has floated around our family for years (typewritten, I don't know who prepared it): "It is recorded that three brothers, Clement, Edward and James, came from Lydd, County of Kent, England, and settled in Hingham (1635), Weymouth and Dorchester, Massachusetts." However, I now read in the latest Bates Bulletin that Edward of Weymouth was unrelated to the Lydd clan. I can believe this, because I couldn't reconcile the Edward of Weymouth with the dates for Clement & James. Sooo, did Clement and James have other siblings? LDS records show a brother, Edward Bates, who was born 8 Oct 1592 in Lydd, and died 3 Oct 1616 in Lydd (AFN 9BTZ-FS). Has anyone looked into this Edward from Lydd? Many thanks, Amy Bates Grant
Some time ago, Laren Delaney of the Bates Assoc. asked me to post my information on the line I have for Abner C. Bates Jr., b. 7 Jan 1777. I've tried to keep it brief. - - - - I trace my ancestry through Abner Jr.(Abner Sr.; David; John; Increase; Edward; William) Let's start with more immediate ancestors of mine: 1) Mehitable Bates m. Alfred Chilson, 14 Feb 1838 in Chester, Ohio. (I am descended from this line). 2) Mehitabel Bates, b. 6 May 1812 to Abner Bates & Hitty [Mehitabel Whitman]. [Church record of the First Congregational Church on the Hill, 1762-1839] [Cummington, MA Vital Records]. 3) Abner Bates Jr. and Hittee Whitman m. 27 May 1798. [Town Clerk's records, publishment of intent to marry]. [Cummington, MA Vital Records]. 4) "Mehitabel [Whitman], b. 21 Feb 1779; m. May 27, 1798, Abner C., Jr. son, of Abner C. and Hannah Bates, b. 1776; d. Nov 2, 1815; residence Cummington Mass. She died Chester, O., June 7, 1841..." [History of the Descendants of John Whitman of Weymouth]. [She was the dau. of Samuel Whitman]. 4) "Samuel [Whitman], b. 1730; ..[cut for brevity].. At the age of 94 Samuel having removed from Bridgewater to Cummington, joined that Baptist Church... [History of the Descendants of John Whitman of Weymouth] 5) "Abner Bates (David, John, Increase, Edward) son of David and Hannah, b. Aug. 10, 1740; d. ; m. Sarah Tower, Sept. 13 1770. Children; John, b. April 2, 1773. Abner, b. Jan 7, 1777. Hannah, bapt. Jan 15, 1779. Debbe, bapt. Nov. 5, 1780." [History of the Descendants of John Whitman of Weymouth] 6) An "Abner Bates of Weymouth" served in the Revolutionary war in a unit commanded by James Lincoln, listed on 1 Jan 1776. [History of Hingham]. [His father David Bates married Hannah Lincoln in Hingham]. I find no further signs of Abner in Hingham/Bridewater/Weymouth. I believe that Sarah Tower died between Nov 1780 and spring 1784; Abner moved to Cummington and remarried. The next record I have is from Cummington: 7) The "Vital Records of Cummington" mentions Abner arriving from an "unknown location". 8) Marriages - Abner [Bates] and Hannah Norton, 4 Nov 1784. [Town Clerk's records, publishment of intent to marry]. [Cummington, MA Vital Records]. 9) Births - Bates, Virtue b. 26 Oct 1785, bap. 21 May 1786, d. of Abner and Hannah James b. 2 Aug 1788, bap. 12 Oct 1788, s. of Abner and Hannah. d. 15 Dec 1806. [Cummington, MA Vital Records]. 10) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1790 Census for Cummington: | (and, based on the *Bridgewater* Bates data:) Bates, Abner 1 FWM 16+ | (Abner Sr. was 49) 2 FWM -16 | (John was 16, Abner Jr. was 12) 4 FWF | (wife Hannah, Hannah Jr. - 11, Debbe - 10 and Virtue - 4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1800 Census for Cummington: Bates, Abner 1 FWM 10-16 | (James was 11) 1 FWM 16-26 | (Abner Jr. was 22) 1 FWM 45+ | (Abner Sr. was 59) 1 FWF 10-16 | (Virtue was 14) 2 FWF 45+ | (wife Hannah & her mother?) any data on a male Mr. Norton death 1790-1800? At this census, John was 27, Hannah was 21 and Debbe was 20, all are gone from the household. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The 1810, etc. census data also match very well with the dates of birth from the Bridgewater data [Bates geneaogy by Samuel Bates]. I would like to get corroberation on Sarah Tower's death [probably in Bridgewater, Weymouth or Hingham.. between Nov 1780 and spring 1784]. Also, any data on Abner or Hannah filing for a War Pension? If so, from where? (that's as short as I could keep it! Thanks ) - Roger
Looking for info regarding the personal life of William Jasper BATES, s/o Lemuel James BATES & Nancy Jane CHUMBLEY. He was born 1853, TN. Family then migrated to Franklin Co., MO. Found a newspaper article dated 5 June 1879 stating he was found legally insane and sent to Fulton Sanitarium, which is north of Franklin Co. He died Apr 1884. Where? He's buried in Bates Cemetery in Franklin Co., MO. Did he die as a patient in the sanitarium or had he already been discharged? Does anyone know of this sanitarium (can records be accessed &/or do they still exist)? Anne Crase [email protected]
Whatever happened to Nathaniel BATES, s/o James Wlm. BATES & Lavina Frances NANCE? It is said he lost his farm circa 1940's or 1950's in VA. His wife, Elizabeth WHITMORE, and their kids, left him and went to Wilson Co., TN and then onto Franklin Co., MO. Did Nathaniel stay in VA? Any record of WHEN he died? Anne Crase [email protected]
