Probably Hickman Co TN Does anyone have Torence Carter BATES in their files? I do not have any other information on him. Marlene Bates Johnson [email protected]

Found this on NC-SC list & thought you'd enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone can stand to take a minute & have a good laugh & then get back to researching!!!!!!!!! Subj: [NC-SC] (hehehe) Off topic, delete if you want to Date: 97-09-03 00:04:54 EDT Reply-to: [email protected] (Lynn) Hi, After everything that has been going on I thought we all need a laugh at someone else's expence. Have a good one. Lynn Bain from a "Wall Street Journal" article by Jim Cartoon. "Newbie computer user questions" 1. Compaq is considering changing the command "Press Any Key" to "Press Return Key" because of the many calls asking where the "Any" key is. 2. AST technical support had a cller complaining that her mouse was hard to control with the dust cover on. The cover turned out to be the plastic bag the mouse was packaged in. 3. Another Compaq technician received a call from a man complaining that the system wouldn't read word processing files from his old diskettes. After trouble- shooting for magnets and heat failed to diagnose the problem, it was found that the customer labeled the diskettes by rolling them into a typewriter to type on them. 4. Another AST customer was asked to send a copy of her defective diskettes. A few days later a letter arrived from the customer along with xeroxed copies of the floppies. 5. A Dell technician advised his customer to put his troubled floppy back in the drive and close the door. The customer asked the tech to hold on, and was then heard putting the phone down, getting up and crossing the room to close the door to his room. 6. Another Dell customer called to say he couldn't get his computer to fax anything. After 40 minutes of trouble-shooting, the technician discovered the man was trying to fax a piece of paper by holding it in front of the monitor screen and hitting the "send" key. 7. Another Dell customer needed help setting up a new program, so a Dell tech suggested he go to the local Egghead. "Yea, I got me a couple of friends," the customer replied. When told "Egghead" was a software store, the man said, "Oh, I thought you meant for me to find a couple of geeks." 8. Yet another Dell customer called to complain that his keyboard no longer worked. He had cleaned it by filling up his tub with soap and water and soaking the keyboard for a day, then removing all the keys and washing them individually. 9. A Dell technician received a call from a customer who was enraged because his computer had told him he was "bad and an invalid". The tech explained that the computer's "bad command" and "invalid" responses shouldn't be taken personally. 10. An exasperated caller to Dell Computer Tech Support couldn't get her new Dell Computer to turn on. After ensuring that the computer was plugged in, the technician asked her what happened when she pushed the power button. Her response, "I pushed and pushed on this foot pedal and nothing happens." The "foot pedal" turned out to be the computer's mouse. 11. Another customer called Compaq tech support to say her brand-new computer wouldn't work. She said she unpacked the unit, plugged it in, and sat there for 20 minutes waiting for something to happen. When asked what happened when she pressed the power switch, she asked "What power switch?" 12. True story from Novell NetWire SysOp: Caller: "Hello, is this Tech Support?" Tech: "Yes, it is. How may I help you?" Caller: "The cup holder on my PC is broken and I am within my warranty period. How do I go about getting that fixed?" Tech: "I'm sorry, but did you say a "cup holder"? Caller: "Yes, it's attached to the front of my computer." Tech: "Please excuse me if I seem a bit stumped; it's because I am. Did you receive this as part of a promotion, like at a trade show? How did you get this cup holder? Does it have any trademark on it?" Caller: "It came with my computer, I don't know anything about a promotional. It just has "4X" on it." At this point the Tech Rep had to mute the caller, because he couldn't stand it. The caller had been using the load drawer of the CD-ROM drive as a cup holder, and snapped it off the drive!! Another well-known one that I can add is the true tale of the user who called up complaining that the instructions said to load the four diskettes into "Drive A" but he couldn't possibly get more than two in. -- ---------------- { [email protected] } -------------
In a message dated 97-09-01 14:06:19 EDT, you write: << Does anyone have any proof or primary source of the following: 1. That John Bates' (1655-1719) wife Elizabeth was a DANIEL. 2. That his second wife, Hannah, was a TRUDALL. 3. That Benjamin Bates' (Gen. 6) wife was Hannah GREEN. I can find no proof of her maiden name. Also I have 2 "lifelines" for Benjamin: one is 1719-1760, the other is 1739-1804. Which birth & death dates are correct? >> I can cite the sources, but not the proof in answer to your questions. 1. Elizabeth was a Daniel per booki "Colonial Granville County and It's People," by Worth S. Ray. And page 37 of 1991 book "The Bates Family of Old Virginia and Beyond," compiled from notes of Aubrey R. Bates, which said: "John (Bates) married Elizabeth Daniel......Elizabeth was the sister of John Daniel; who died in 1666..." In mid-page, the book said that it seems more likely that Elizabeth Daniel was the mother of his children (as opposed to Hannah Trudall). 2 It is likely that second wife of John Bates d1720 was a Trudall since the Will of George Trudall made bequeath to (York Co. Book 12 page 71) "To my loving Godson John Bates, slon of John Bates and Hannah his wife." 3. Per Bates Booster No. 50 dated January 1980.... Benjamin Bates Sr was born 14 April 1739 and died 7 January 1804. He married Hannah Green on 1 May 1760. She was the daughter of Filmer Green and Mary Walker. There is a WILSON researcher who does all Wilsons and may have your answer. He is "Doc" Begnal-Young. INTERNET:[email protected] Good luck. Tell him I sent you. Aloha, Joann
Anne, I have never seen any documentation for Elizabeth WILSON. If you hear from someone who has, please let me know. It seems as if I have something on Hannah Trudall, but can't find it (yet). I will look again. As for Benj. & Hannah. His date of death is given in Henrico MM minutes as 1804, 1, 7. In a Bates family Bible, currently in possession of the Library of Virginia, there is a reference to the marriage of Benjamin & Hannah, daughter of (missing first name due to edges of the page being gone) Green. Perhaps someone else will be able to give you answers to the other questions, Good Luck, Toni

Hello I'm new to this list. My earliest known Bates ancestor is Daniel Bates (Born Nov. 17, 1790 in RI, Died August 31, 1870 in Yankeetown, IN). He married Frances Emerson (Born Mar 5 1790 in MA and Died July 23, 1868 in Yankeetown, IN), who is believed to be the daughter of Samuel Prescott Emerson and Sarah Nutt. Any information on Daniel's ancestors would be appreciated. I am willing to share what I have on his descendants. Janet W. May
Do any of my Bates folks sound familiar to anyone out there in cyberspace? Stephen White Bates, Sr., born 1880 in Whitesburg, Ky (what is now Letcher Co.) He married Virginia Carlisle from Anderson County on September 18, 1912. Stephen's parents: William H. Bates apparently of Clay County, Ky and Margaret Yates apparently of Madison County, Ky would have been married in the 1870's or 1860's and their birthdates would have been in the 1840's or 50's. Stephen had at least one known brother, Thomas Bates who never married. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

In a message dated 97-08-15 14:56:07 EDT, you write: << Was there a will, or does anyone have a copy of the will of James BATES who married Susanna WITT?? >> I've found no record of will for the James Bates that married Susannah Witt in Halifax CoVA. I've a couple books covering Wilkes Co., Georgia, such as "Early Georgia Wills and Settlements of Estates - Wilkes CoGA by Sarah Quinn Smith Perhaps you have this entry from Wilkes Co., Ga records? Evans, David, dec.. "Arden Evans adm. Jan. 9, 1821. Paid Distribution; John Bates: JAMES BATES, Jesse Evans, Anderson Bates, Elizabeth Evans, William Evans, Peter Lunsford, who married Susannah Evans, JOHN W. BATES, who married RHODA EVANS, Returns 1819 - 26, page 133." It is suggested that the above JAMES BATES was the one that married SUSANNAH WITT in Halifax County VA, and the above JOHN W. BATES was JOHN "WITT" BATES Sr. their son. Wayne Witt Bates, Editor The Bates Booster Newsletter
Was there a will, or does anyone have a copy of the will of James BATES who married Susanna WITT?? Thank you, Norma Robinson Biloxi, MS [email protected]

James is last shown on the 1800 South Carolina Census. Elisabeth appears as a widow on the 1810 census in TN Who were James' parents, siblings, etc. There were many BATES families living in the Greenville SC area at that time. My James must have been related to someone? Was he a farmer? Did he serve in the Revolutionary War? >> >>
