Seeking any information on Sarah Bates, wife of Milton Marion Duke. She would have been born about 1840-50, was in Chicago at the time of the Chicago fire (1871), then moved to Bloomington, IL, where she is believed to have died. A son, Louis Milton Duke, was born in 1873, just a short time after her husband was killed an a RR derailment. Any help would be most welcome. Thanks. Bob King

Thanks - Maria Maria, I started buying history books at library sales and have about 20-30. I checked a History of England with no luck but the one next to that, A History of Western Civilization, had "Agincort" in the index. I got to use my new toy that I installed yesterday, HP ScanJet 4c, to copy the following. I hope it helps. Vaughn The following is an excerpt from a chapter on The Hundred Year's War (1337-1453). Fourth Phase of the War (1415-1429) Encouraged by the division in France and a gradually evolving Burgundian alliance, the ambitious Henry V (14131422) resolved to reopen the conflict and press again the English claims to the French throne. After a secret understanding with Burgundy, Henry, with a well equipped army of about 11,500 men, invaded Normandy in 1415. Here be besieged and took Harfleur at the mouth of the Seine with the assistance of cannon. With a reduced force of about 6000 men, Henry swung through Normandy and Picardy in the direction of Calais. At Agincourt in Artois a large French force estimated to have been over three times the size of Henry's army caught up with him. Henry V had taken up a strong position with about 1100 yards of easily defensible front. The English first simulated an advance and then re-formed on the defensive, setting long pointed stakes to their front, implanted at an angle in the direction of the French. As the French cavalry charged in disorderly fashion across the muddy ground, most of them were mowed down or halted by deadly discharges of English e arrows, and the horses of those who got e through were halted or impaled by the stakes. Agincourt was a repetition of Poitiers and Cr6cy. English losses have been estimated at 115, French at 6000. Henry V renewed the attack in 1417 Between 1417 and 1419 he conquered Normandy. Meanwhile the Burgundians captured King Charles VI. For a while the Burgundians and the English contested for control of northern France. After the murder of Duke John the Fearless of Burgundy by the Dauphin's men during an interview on a bridge at Montcreau in 1419, the Burgundians went over entirely to the English side and supported the candidacy of Henry V for the French crown. In the consequent Treaty of Troyes (1420), Charles VI and Queen Isabelle, with Burgundian support, approved the marriage of their daughter, Catherine, to Henry V, whom they designated as interim regent of France and heir to the French throne. The Dauphin Charles was "for his enormous crimes" disinherited, and if Henry and Catherine had a son, the latter was eventually to succeed to the French throne. But the Dauphin Charles would not consent to his disinheritance, and held out in central southern France. Known derisively as the "King of Bourges," the Dauphin was strongly supported by factions in central France as well as by some French elements elsewhere. In the territory south of the Loire, Charles maintained a dissolute migratory court, dominated by favorites and full of intrigues.

Good evening - back to my Bates line after a while away. My "oldest" is JOHN BATES b 25 Oct 1415 Lydd, Kent, ENG; died 1445 and buried in All Hallows Parish Churchyard. "a legendary soldier in the Battle of Agincourt". I show two sons, THOMAS BATES b 1440 Canterbury, Kent, ENG and HENRY BATES died 1478. It would be nice to fill in a little more about John, and does anyone know the wife of Thomas? All ancient history of course, but one does like to go back as far as possible!!! I would love to know more about the "Battle of Agincourt" and welcome a suggestion for a book to request into the local (very tiny) library about it. Thanks - Maria
Hi, I was on vacation last week and to my horror when I returned home I found that I had no e-mail for Oct. 25, 26, and 27. Could you please re-send any digests that were sent for those dates? AOL can't help me, and I don't know what to do but to ask if you can re-send them. I sure hope so!! Thanks for your time. Pat
BATES researchers: I am interested in the ancestries of my different BATES ancestors, Ruth BATES STUBBS, and Rebecca BATES GOFF, both, of ME. Family tradition says that these two women were sisters--we all know what that's worth. Their respective children, Richard True STUBBS married Mercy Wealthy GOFF in ME. I suspect that Rebecca may be the daughter of Lemuel BATES, Sr. [b.1738 in Hanover, MA] and his wife, Mercy WITHERELL [b.c.1746, d/Samuel WITHEREALL and Rebecca FERRIS]. She was b.c.1775, and was believed to be still living [in Milo, ME?] in 1860. Rebecca md. William GOFF. Ruth may be a sister to Rebecca, above. She was b.c.1775 *in Scituate, MA* and reportedly md1. *a* BAILEY, who d. within a year, and md2[1805 in Leeds, ME] Samuel STUBBS, a widower. I would appreciate hearing from anyone working on ME BATES families, or anyone who has info on the above. Wyn JONAS

Jeremiah BATTS/BATES - Giles Co TN Looking for a lost BATES, probably in Giles Co, known as Jeremiah BATTS. Born c1800-1810 TN. He may have been a magistrate, or something like that in Giles Co. Later on there is a younger Jeremiah on Cane Creek (by 1860). Older person with the information above not sure of anything else, and this is all that is really remembered. Possibly the older Jeremiah went to Alabama, but not sure of the information. I have been searching for this person under the name Jeremiah BATES until I was told about the BATTS spelling. Anyone have this Giles Co Jeremiah or the younger Jeremiah who appears on Cane Creek by 1860? Any info appreciated. Marlene Bates Johnson in OK [email protected]

I am interested in the revoliutionary war records of James Bates and his father James Bates. Both James lived in Halifax County, VA and the elder James was the son of John and Susannah Fleming Bates of New Kent County, VA.
I am looking for information about my Great-Great-Grandmother, Jennie May Bates, and I just found out a tidbit of info that may be hers... In the 1880 Census of Ohio, Stark Co., Washington Twp, Call #79-1068, pg 451, Dwelling #5, Family #5, the following information was enumerated: Bryan, W. P., White, Male, 62 years old, married, farmer, born "while on the sea". Bryan, Eliza, White, Female, 44 years old, married, K. House?, born in Ohio, father and mother born in Ohio. Bates, Jennie, White, Female, 13 years old, Daughter of Wife, single, born in Ohio, mother born in Ohio, father born in unknown. Ryan, H., White, Male, 15 years old, Laborer, single, born in Ohio, mother and father born in Ireland. Bristo, Frank, White, Male, 52 years old, boarder, brick and stonemason, born in Ohio. My questions: first, I am trying to connect this Jennie Bates with my line. My Jennie May Bates was married to John Perry Jackson on June 7, 1883 in Stark Co., Alliance, Ohio. She would have been about 17 at this point, and the marriage certificate, printed with the words "is over the age of eighteen" for the wife, has the word "eighteen" crossed out and "seventeen" written in above it, with the notation "consent on file". It does look like this Jennie was the right age in the right place. I need some way to verify this. second, does that mean that Jennie was illegitimate? Or perhaps her father passed away, divorced, or abandoned her mother? I would very much like to know anything on Jennie, or Eliza, or any other in this list...

Joseph BATES' children were Laura, Charles, James, Curtis, Joseph, Leslie, Emma, Robert Calvin and Sarah. Robert Calvin BATES married and moved to Colorado. Joseph BATES obituary states that his mother died when he was quite young, and he was taken in by a John Marshall, who moved with the married couple to Iowa. There is no mention of Joseph BATES father or mother. Clark County, Ohio was organized from several other counties in about 1817. Birth records are not available.
