Trying to establish the ancestors of a JOSEPH BATES(c1730-c1790) who was granted 200 acres of land in Berkley Co., SC (now Union Co.) in 1758. This land was located on the lower Fairforest Creek, near the present town of Union. JOSEPH BATES JR.(c1755-1814) inherited this 200 acres from his father(above) and in turn sold this land in 1799 to his son JOSEPH BATES. This sale was made when THOMAS BATES JR(C1755-1814) was living in the "Settlement of Tombigbee" in the Territory of Mississippi. His land was located in what became Washington Co., AL and now Baldwin Co., AL. His will was probated 26 May 1814 in Baldwin Co., AL. Associated names in Union Co, SC are Thomas LAYTON. I think everyone doing research ends up taking notes of people that may fit sometime. Right now I live overseas in a country not blessed with a Family History Center so the internet has to be my main tool for information. Information about our BATES: Frank/Francis M. BATES (@1840, GA-) He married Delilah Flannigan either in GA or AR. She was a widow of ? DUNN. There is a Francis M. Bates in 1858 in Lawrence Co. AR -- Land in Sect 27 Twp 15 Range 7W -- don't know whether the same person or different one. Frank may have lived in Oregon or Ripley Counties in MO before moving to AR. Frank Bates was married to Delilah by the time of the Randolph Co, AR census report of 1870.

Rob, thanks for joing us. i have one ancestor who i know was born in England but i do not know where or who his parents are. he is: George BATES born 1793. He was in the states by 1832 but probably before. 1832 is when his sone John Edward was born to him and his Virginia born wife Martha(last name unknown) The family story is that two brothers came to North America together but one went to Canada and the other the States. Fellow researchers, The general concensus is that James Bate b. 1562 and Mary Martine b. 1562 are the parents of Clement Bates b. 1/22/1594/95. Does anyone have a problem with that? This James Bate was born and died in Lydd Parish, Kent, England. I have another James Bate in my charts born about the same time. This one was born estimate 1540-1570 and lived in Jordenthorpe, York, England. He was father of Jane Bate b. est. 1575-90 who married 1605 John Parker II b. 1575 in England. Hello My name is Rob Bates and I live in Norfolk, England. I am researching my ancestry here in Norfolk. I have traced my BATES line back in 1736. My ancestor was a Joseph BATES, died 1766, who had surviving children: John (born 1738), Joseph (b.1740), Thomas (b.1741), Benjamin (b.1750) and Susan (b.1751). Dear Cousin Gil and all, It may surprise you to learn that your ancestors Reuben Frederick Bates and Amanda Boulware were second cousins. They were married 31 December 1855 in Troy, Perry County, Indiana. Amanda died sometime before 22 September 1877 when Reuben married 2) Sarah E. Oxley. Among the children of William Seargeant and his first wife Laurana __________ of Louisa Co., VA were the eldest Mahethalem ( a daughter) and Dabney, the youngest. Mahethalem "Hithie" Seargeant m. in 1783 James M. Bates (1762-1828). Their son Reuben married Lydia Willian. These were the parents of Reuben Frederick Bates. Dabney Seargeant m. Margaret "Peggy" Worthington, the daughter of Capt. Edward Worthington and Betsey Stephens. Their daughter, Elizabeth Seargeant, married John Boulware. These were the parents of the Amanda Boulware (ca1837-before 1877) who married Reuben Frederick Bates. I descend from Elizabeth Bates (the daughter of James and Hithie) who married Charles Worthington (the son of Edward and Betsey). Hi Bob, I had Clement Bates b. 1/22/1594/95 the son of Thomas Bates b. 1569 Kent England. I believe I got that from a book of Bates descendants that went to Cummington, Hampshire Co., MA, but will have to look for that. Am wondering what source you have for James 1614 being his father. Not doubting you, just want to make sure I get it right. Then for Joseph Bates Sr. b. abt 1630, I have that he came to America in 1635 at the age of 5, but I also have that he was born 9/28/1628 Biddenden, Kent, England. Don't know my source for that, either. His wife was born 1642, but they were married 1/9/1658 in Hingham, rather than 1648 as you have (I imagine that was a typo, as that would make her age 6 at time of marriage). I descend from Caleb Bates 1666 and Mary Lane. Do you want that line of descent? I am hoping that the FTM update will allow me to put in source info for each piece of info, so am working on gathering up those sources for everything new I enter and going back to look for everything I've already got in there. I am looking for information regarding Emmaline (aka Emma or Emily) Bates. She was born Feb 1864 in either Canada or Michigan. I do not know the names of her parents or how she arrived in Cape Giradeau Co., Missouri. She married William Allen McClain (aka McLean and McLain) in 1880 in Missouri (presumably Cape Giradeau County). She is enumerated with William in the 1880 census of that county. She is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Cape County. Her tombstone inscription indicates that she died during childbirth during 1896. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Stephanie Robinett
