While digging for other old records, I came across 5 generations of family group sheets starting with Daniel Staples Bates, Alfred Bates Sr.,Alfred Merton Bates Jr., Harold Sage Bates, and Edgar Alfred Bates (both wives). They were in Pike Co, KY Margaret was a sister to Martin Van Buren Bates who was, for many many years, in the Guiness Book of Records as the Tallest Man in the World. They were the children of John Wallas Bates and Sarah. That is all I know. I would appreciate any info anyone may have. Seeking info for parentage of John Bates (b: 15 Sep 1776??, d: 20 Oct 1851 in Murray Co., GA). On 5 Dec 1799 in SC, John married Barbara Grainger(Crenshaw)(b:16 Oct 1779, d:31 Jul 1848). Their children were John C., Julius R., Elias, Frances, Larriett, Harriet, Sarah, Emeline, Rice Ross and Clayton. One researcher has said John Bates was born in Virginia. He ultimately served as a Major General in the Georgia Militia. He was a state representative for Hall Co., GA, for about 15 years from about 1815 to about 1830. He was also the state representative for Murray Co., GA, for one year. It is said he and his brother Julius came to Hall Co., GA, from SC. They had a sister named Elizabeth who married a Thomas Jackson. Any info/leads would be very much appreciated.

I am seeking information on the family of Sarah Bates born about 1783 in VA. I don'nt know who she married. I think she had about 9 children: Hannah, Evaline, William, David, Thomas, Marion, Sarah, Mary, and possibly Caroline b. in AL. All of the other children were born in GA, many in Wilkes Co. I have found Sarah in 1850 in a Coosa Co. Census with Marion and Mary. William, who is my great great grandfather was living close by with his wife Lucinda Dennis and two children (one who was my great grandfather Francis Marion Bates. I also found Thomas,, David and Sarah in Coosa Co. in 1850 and in 1860 along witih Evaline who married John Pate and Sarah who married a Walker. I fouond Hannah married to Carey Cotton in Coweta Co, GA. I would like to know what Bates Sarah married and when, and also if the above listed children are all her children. BGosling-- Don't want to discourage any one hunting for ancestors, but I suspect you have not been at this very long. You give us precious little info to go on so no one can dip into the magic well and come up with your Bates line. Tracing ancestry means working back from what you know to the great mysteries of the past. Along the way you need to dig a lot into things like the Federal census, marriage records, death certificates, obituaries, funeral home records, newspaper accounts, wills, deeds, state and county tax records etc. Sound imposing? It is, but you will surprise yourself at how much you can dig up and verify in the records. If, as I suspect, you are very new at this great detective game, you need help, help, help. Fortunately for you, there exists in almost every county in this big country, a Family History Center (FHC) operated in a building next to a Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormon), often called LDS. Start your search for such a church in the phone directory and /or the phone company information service. When you find one, go there and observe film reader-printers, computers with CDs to search, census film, and helpful volunteers who will get you started and point you in the right direction. They won't do the work for you. That's your job, but they will turn you into a pretty good researcher in no time at all. AND, the big PLUS is, they have catalogs of all the holdings of the greatest genealogical library in the world, The Family History Library at Salt Lake City, Utah.
