Hello, I am looking for any one that has a connection to the Bates family in Vermont. In Northfield and Tunbridge areas. I am not sure how active this group is since I have not received many messages. I would love to hear from you. Thanks, Linda :-)
I am trying to find relatives of my grandfather John William Bates. He was born in Nov 1896 in West Bromwich (Staffordshire) England. His fathers name is the same John William Bates and his mothers name is Florence Wilson. My grandfather and his father and brothers came over to the US in 1912 on the Lusitania. His mother and sister came later. My grandfather had an aunt and uncle by the names of Bert and Marie Wilson. Bert was Florence's brother. Any info that you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Melissa White [email protected]
I am not getting any Bates mail since I changed my address. It is Wilma T. (Billie} North at <[email protected] Can you change your records from [email protected] and for a short time at AOL.com but didn't use it. I do like to receive the Bates letters.
Hello, I am looking for the Bates from Vermont. In Tunbridge and Northfield areas. Thank you. Linda
Hi list buds, I finally found the parents of my gg grandmother but not much info. Betsy Bates b. 4 May, 1797 Montpelier, VT d. 1879 Los Angeles, CA Her parents? John Bates b. 30 June, 1768 d. 3 June, 1857 Isabella Hartford b. 19 November, 1766 d. 12 April, 1838 Does anyone have anything on this line? Were there other children besides Betsy? Where were John and Isabella born and where did they die? Thanks for any help out there. Joanne Perrier
I am looking for information regarding Emmaline (aka Emma or Emily) Bates. She was born Feb 1864 in either Canada or Michigan. I do not know the names of her parents or how she arrived in Cape Giradeau Co., Missouri. She married William Allen McClain (aka McLean and McLain) in 1880 in Missouri (presumably Cape Giradeau County). She is enumerated with William in the 1880 census of that county. She is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Cape County. Her tombstone inscription indicates that she died during childbirth during 1896. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Stephanie Robinett
Saw a Nelson Bates mentioned on someone's list a couple of days ago, but must have deleted the sender. If he was born 183l in New York or that part of the country I would appreciate the information. Thanks. Please reply either [email protected] or [email protected]
The Bates to whom you refer are of the John Bates who came to VA in 1623 on the Southampton. Information on this line is prevalent through The Bates Boosters published by the Bates Family of Old Virginia. ~~another Bates descendant ~~Barbara
Might anyone on this list know anything about Frank/Francis Marion BATES (@1840, GA-)?
Hello Everyone, I posted the first generation of this query a few days ago. I left the subject line blank (a few people complained) so I have corrected that mistake. I have also identified several of those of whom I was unsure, so I thought I would repost. The Bates and Evans families are closely tied together in Wilkes Co., GA. David Evans, who died about 1807 in Wilkes Co., had the following: William married Mary _____ Jesse married Hannah _____ Sarah married John Bates Elizabeth married Daniel Brown Arden married Martha Inze Rouse Sophia married Anderson Bates Hannah married James Bates Susannah married Peter Lunceford Rhoda married John W. Bates In 1861 in Wilkes Co., GA Arden Evans, son of David, left a portion of his estate to his mother in law but most of the estate to his "ne ices and nephews now living". Through Arden Evans' Estate records, I have been able to put many of David Evans' descendants in place. I also have a number listed in the records that I have not been able to place. I am posting this inquiry to both the EVANS-L and BATES-L Lists, in hope that some of these names may be familiar to some of you and we can help each other in putting the puzzle together. The information of which I feel certain is also posted on both of my Web Sites, which are listed at the bottom of this message. There are about thirty persons listed in the records that I have found so far. It is likely there are others but one has to keep in mind the "now living" part of the bequest. Here goes: 1. Francis Marion Bates 2. Mary Bates 3. Thomas F. Bates 4. William E. Bates 5. David Michell Bates 6. William and Sarah Walker (William Walker married Sarah Ann Bates in Chambers Co., AL 29 December 1838} 7. John Pate (John Pate married Eviline Bates in Chambers Co.,AL 19 April 1836) The seven listed about are some of the children of John bates and Sarah Evans. The Estate Records of William E. Bates, in Coosa Co., Al in 1862 identifies all the children of this union and makes note of monies received from the estate of A. Evans. 8. John W. Bates Jr. 9. Nasa Jones (Nasa Jones married Mary A. Bates in Coweta Co., GA 9 May 1840) 10. J. Walker Boswell (John Walker Boswell married Susan Bates in Coweta Co., GA) 11. Caroline Bates 12. John W. Bellamy (John W. Bellamy married Elizabeth Bates in Coweta Co., GA 2 November 1848) 13. Hannah Shaddix (Issac Newton Shaddix married Hannah Bates in Coweta Co., GA 13 April 1856) The above six are some of the known children of John W. Bates and Rhoda Evans. 14. Daniel Brown 15. David Brown The above two are two of the children of Daniel Brown and Elizabeth Evans. 16. David Lunceford 17. Daniel Lunceford 18. Nelson and Barbara Vaughn Two of the above three I am sure result from the union of Peter Lunceford and Susannah Evans. I believe Barbara is their's as well. I have seen one report they had a daughter Barbara, and the name is not usually associated with the Bates of Evans lines. I do not have a marriage record fro Nelson and Barbara. 19. Matthew Bates I believe Matthew belongs to James Bates and Hannah Evans. They are said to have had a Matthew. John and Hannah are said to have moved to Alabama early, then on to Mississippi. There is a receipt in Arden Evans Estate Records for postage to Alabama and Mississippi. 20. Caroline Bates There are two Caroline Bates noted in the records. This unidentified one , in addition to the one belonging to John W. Bates. 21. Arden Evans Jr. 22. David Evans 22. John W. Evans 23. Sally Stewart I believe these are the children of Jesse Evans and Hannah (unknown). I am not certain of John W. Evans. Jesse had a son John for sure but I have not seen him identified as John W. Evans. The book "Southern Lineages" by A. Evans Wynn says Jesse had a daughter Salley who married and (unknown) Stewart. 24. John Nowland (John Nolan married Susan Evans in Morgan Co., GA 17 May 1835. 25. Thomas and Nancy Williams (Thomas Williams married Nancy Evans in Wilkes Co., GA 13 December 1824 These are two of the children of William Evans and Mary (unknown). I am unclear whether William died in Greene or Morgan Co., GA. But, in Morgan Co., on 5 April 1824, Nancy Evans is appointed guardian of William Evans minor children (Andrew, William, Sarah, Columbus, Emily and Susan), and that the widow, Mary, has intermarriered with Thomas Murrah. 26. F. M. Streibling 27. John M. Poss 28. Lester Hopkins 29. William D. Hardy 30. John J. Ruff I've no clue on the above five. HELP! If any of you are working any of these lines I would very much appreciate hearing from you. Thanks David -------------------------------------------------------- Name: David Walker E-mail: David Walker <[email protected]> Date: 03/22/1998 Time: 11:43:13 http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/dwalker1/DWALKER1/index.htm http://personal.cha.bellsouth.net/~dwalker1 --------------------------------------------------------

-----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Thursday, March 19, 1998 11:31 PM Subject: BATES-D Digest V98 #30 Dear Mr... Bates, I noticed in your input above the names John and Fleming Bates. I wonder if you can help me with this very "skinny" line from my husband's WALL line? Here's is what I have so far: John Bates, Sr. married Chloe Unknown. Issue: David Bates, John Bates, Jr. James Fleming Bates, Matthew Bates, Mary Elizabeth Bates, and Susannah Bates. Mary Elizabeth married Charles WALL, born abt 1748 in Greenbriar Co. VA., died 28 July 1802 in Halifax, NC. If you can give any information on these people I would greatly appreciate your advice.
It's possible that you are looking for the city called Catawissa, PA. It's in Columbia county, and it's zip code is 17820. Carol, aka [email protected]
I am looking for information on Samuel S. Bates and his wife Eliza Rhodes. According to my mother he came to Oregon with is 12 or 15 children :>) from Missouri. The only child I know of is Nellie Cleminia Bates who married Lewis Grant Stafford in Portland, Oregon, Feb. 26, 1900. They are my great grandparents. I have that Samuel is buried in Grass Valley, Sherman Co., OR. If any one as anything they would like to share, please email me at: [email protected] Thank you very much. Aldean
If you have the determination to decipher filled-in type and the convoluted style of Worth S. Ray, you might look up a book originally published in 1945 as Part II of "The Lost Tribes of North Carolina" and in a subsequent re- print of Part II called " Colonial Granville County and It's People" sub-titled Loose Leaves from The Lost Tribes of North Carolina. There is a mention of John Bates who married Elizabeth Daniel, dau of John Daniel of Accomac and Northhampton County, VA on page 246 in "Loose Leaves xxx". This establishes the relation of the Bates and Daniel families. There is further mention on page 247. Then on page 248 begins the story of an Allied Family by the name of Bates. He begins with the emigrant John, died Bruten Parish 1666 and goes on to speak of and chart some of the Bates family who lived for generations along Queen's Creek, in York County, VA. Over time some of the children married and moved to other parts of VA and NC. Among other names allied with Bates were Woodsons and Harrisons as well as Daniels. Somewhere in his "Leaves" Worth Ray speaks of the Bates who became Quakers and lived along Queens Creek, York County, VA. I know this apparently has no direct connection to the question you asked, but if you are desparately hunting info, reading this may turn up a clue and at worst will add to your knowledge of the Bates of VA and there ties to NC families. The author takes you through many generations and the given name James is frequently seen. The closest I came to finding a Rev War James was the fact that James Bates, married Susana Hix (Nix) of Hicks. He was a member of the Assembly and Conventions from Goochland County. He fathered two sons Capt Fleming Bates b. 1747 d. 17?5, and John Bates who both fought in the Rev War.
Hi everyone, I just found a clue in my old family box of photos that I am very excited about. I have been searching for any clue to help me find parents and location in PA of my grgrandfather Abram Franklin Bates.(4 Jun 1839, PA-26 Sep 1919, CA). Found a photo of a young man with the following written on the back, maybe you know him? C.H. BATES "for Uncle Abe" b. 12 April 1868 (or63?) Calavisea, PA. Does this town sound familiar to anyone? Do you have a C.H. Bates anywhere in your data born 12 April 1868? The photo is taken in Hazleton, PA at Kellmer, Photographic Art Studio No. 13 West Broad St. and is copyrighted 1889. So now I know my grgrandfather had a brother! I will search census as soon as I have the time, in the meantime, any help from any BATES researchers?! Thank you! Sharyn Bates e-mail: [email protected] San Rafael,CA All possible spellings of: ATKINS BATES BOONE BRIGGS BUNCH CLEAVER CRUMPTON EVERTON HAGGET HARGRAVE HOUSTON HULL JONES KELLEY LOGSDON MCMURTRY MCNEAL MARSH MORGAN ODEL O'FLYNN PARKER PRESTON ROSS SMITH TALLMAN TODD UTLEY VAUGHN And many collateral names!
David, I'm confused about the following and wonder what is the source as I would like to follow up. From your last letter: 25. F. M. Streibling (Simpson Stribling married Sarah Bates in Elbert Co., GA 6 March 1834. They had a son F. M. Stribling. She died before 1850. How does she fit in?) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Note the following entry from the 1850 census of Harris Co. GA, p. 117. #1006 Simpson Stribling 39 M farmer GA Sarah 32 Elizabeth 15 William N. 14 Martha 12 Mary A. 10 George W. 5 Sarah 2 I had suspected that this is the Simpson Stribling who married Sarah Bates in 1834. It fits with Elizabeth being born 1835. Also, there is a Simpson Stribling in Lincoln Co. GA in 1840 on p. 218 who is not there after that. The Simpson Stribling above is still in Harris Co. in 1860 with three more children: Thomas C. 9, Joseph C. 7, and Fanny 1. Wife, Sarah is still living in 1860. 1870 Simpson and Sarah are still in Harris Co. p. 138b. No new children. 1880 Simpson and Sarah are still in Harris Co. p. 542b with four grown children still at home. I don't find any children for him named F. M. Stribling. As I said this morning, the only Frances M. I have found was the one in Lincoln & Wilkes counties. And I think he may be a brother to Simpson and that they are sons of Anthony Stribling. But, that is only a theory at this point. Cynthia
