There was a large number of BATES in Monroe County brfore it was split into Monroe and Noble Counties. I have to leave for a meeting or I would look into this more. I have a copy of a typescript history of this BATES family that may list your Samuel BATES. tendick wrote: > Hi, > > I just received my gg-grandfathers death certificate. Hi Andrea and others, I need to correct my response to Andrea Crowell's question - the Oliver who I think may be a candidate as father of my 4th ggmother Almira Bates was a descendant of Edward Bates (b. 1605 of Boston, Lincolnshire, England, d. Mar 25 1665 in Boston MA). I had previously responded that Oliver was a descendant of Elder Edward Bates of Weymouth. Sorry about that. I found info yesterday that leads me to think that the Samuel Bates of Houndsfield, Jefferson Co, was NOT Oliver's brother/uncle, and was more likely to be Almira's father. A short bio in "History of Jefferson Co., NY, 1793-1894, by John A. Haddock, stated that Merrick M. Bates was a son of Samuel Bates of Houndsfield, and was born in Brimfield MA in 1801. The father Samuel came to Houndsfield in 1801, purchased 285 acres, built a house, then returned to MA to fetch his family, who then came in Dec 1802. Since my Almira was born in MA around 1800, maybe I've hit paydirt. Anyone have info on this Samuel Bates family living in Brimfield, MA? He served in the War of 1812 defending Sacketts Harbor, NY, and died in 1813. His wife's name was Sally, and she was listed as head of household in the 1820 census for Houndsfield. I came across the following which may be of some importance to the Bates families. It adds some information to what I've previous known and lists two (rather cryptic) sources for additional information. Hope it is of use to some. >From the English Origins of New England Families, Series 1, Volume 1, Page 155: Bates Entries in the Register of All Saints Church, Biddenden, Kent, England 1624 - John, son of Clement Bates, bapt 18 October 1624 - John, son of Clement Bates, buried 18 December 1626 - Rachell, daughter of Clement Bate, bapt. 22 October 1628 - Joseph, son of Clement Bate, bapt. 28 September 1631 - A child of Clement Bat, buried unbaptized 2 April 1632 - Benjamin, son of Clement Bate, bapt. 24 June [These entries show the English home of Clement Bates or Bate who came to New England in 1635 and settled at Hingham (REGISTER, vol 14, p. 305), and give information about his children which supplements that given in Water's Gleanings, vol 2, p. 1308. .... Yes, Elder Edward Bates is the immigrant ancestor of Oliver Bates who ended up at Henderson, Jefferson Co NY. He had an uncle Samuel, although I'm not positive this Samuel is the one who lived "next door" to my 4th GGparents Thomas Shaff and Almira Bates in Houndsfield, Jefferson Co NY in the 1820 census. I have nothing to connect Almira Bates to either Oliver or Samuel, but the coincidences are great. I'm not so much looking for the 1600 vintage Bates history yet, ... I know that is available. I'd just like to make sure I'm barking up the right tree before I proceed! Thanks Wayne Olsen Bonney Lake, WA

My gggreatgranparents were Martin Bates (1817-1891) and Margaretha Rausch Kolb (1837). My ggreatgranmother was Mary F. Bates. She married John C. Hesley, in Syracuse, New York, on May 20, 1890. I know this one for a fact, because I have their marriage certificate. I am pulling my hair out trying to find any reference to either one of them. Is their anyone out there that can offer some assistance? Now, I have been trying to track a Nettie Bates for a long time, but I am not sure how she fits into the picture. I have her silver teaspoon as well as many pictures of her. She must have played an important part in my Family's life but I am beleiving my attention has, maybe been too focused on her. Nettie could have been one of the above's mother or Aunt. Who knows? Well, anyway, can anyone help me link up Martin and Margaretha to anyone? Thanks! Suzanne [email protected]
Hi everyone, I've posted a couple of notes about Almira BATES of Oswego Co NY (early 1800's) on this list over the last few months and got very nice/useful responses. Reviewing the LDS IGI, Ancestral File, and 1800 thru 1830 census and reading between the lines, I'm now leaning in a different direction, still searching for her parents. I suspect now that her father may have been either Oliver Bates (b. 7 Jun 1784 Shelburne, Franklin, MA), his father Oliver (b. Aug 7, 1763 Ashby or Shelburne MA) or Oliver Sr's brother Samuel (b. abt 1765 probably Shelburne). The lines of these three lead back to the immigrant ancestor Edward Bates of Boston of the 1630's, but I still have no documentatation connecting Almira with any of them. Here's a rough timeline,.. I'm hoping someone may have some extra details to add to or refute this theory, or to determine for sure if it was Oliver Sr, Oliver Jr, or Samuel! (as well as who the wives were). Bef 1790 - Oliver Bates removed from MA to Randolph VT (reported by letter from Bates Assn included in the Rev. War Pension Application microfilm for Oliver...... that would seem to downgrade Oliver's chances for Almira's fatherhood.... maybe Samuel stayed behind in MA??) Abt 1800 - Almira Bates born in MA (based on 1850 census info). Bef 1810 - Oliver and Samuel Bates families migrated to Jefferson Co, northern NY. Samuel Bates family lived "next door" to Henry Shaff family in Houndsfield or Henderson, Jefferson Co (based on sequence in 1810 census) 1820 - Henry Shaff's son Thomas Shaff had married Almira Bates, and the young family was also living "next door" to Henry Shaff and Oliver Bates Jr in Houndsfield. Samuel Bates had evidently died before the 1820 census, since he was not listed anywhere and an older family headed by Sally Bates was the "next door" neighbor. Abt 1822 - Thomas Shaff and wife Almira Bates moved to Hannibal, Oswego Co NY and had at least 4 children born there or Oswego the next 10 years. 1828 - Oliver Bates Sr died in Henderson, Jefferson Co. (Rev. War Pension Application files and LDS IGI/Ancestral File) 1830 - (census) Thomas Shaff family living in Hannibal. Oliver Bates Jr, and another brother Asa Bates had moved from Jefferson Co to Volney, Oswego Co. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. Wayne Olsen Bonney Lake, WA

Hi.. I'm looking for information on my ggggm. Her name was Elizabeth Bates. She was born 5 July 1820 in Al (I think Franklin Co) and died 12 Sep 1857 in Franklin Co. She married Peter Patterson (1815-1899) on 12 Sep 1839 in Franklin Co. She is also buried in Franklin County at Weatherbee Cemetery. I think but I'm not sure Elizabeth Bates' father was Henderson Bates. He is on the 1830 Census with a dau old enough to be Elizabeth. She would have been 10. Is anyone else researching the Bates family in Franklin County. I would love to exchange information. I don't have alot of Bates information but I do have ALOT of Patterson info. I also believe but have not proven that Elizabeth had a sister/cousin that married Peter's brother - David Nolan Patterson. Does anyone know anything about this marriage? thank you so much, cay devin born in AL living in WA state. [email protected]
I have just discovered that my Great Grandfather, WILLIAM E. BATES, had a brother, SAMUEL A. BATES. William's wife, who died, abt 1860, Elbert County, Georgia, when their son was born, was SALLIE (Sally, Salley, Sarah, COKER), and the wife of Samuel (md 1856, Hall County, Georgia) was NICEY (COKER also spelled KOCHER). Sallie and Nicey (b 1842), were sisters. Brothers married sisters. But I still don't know the names of the parents of either the Bates brothers or the Coker sisters. Nicey and Samuel had at least two children; Sarah Adeline, b-1858, Franklin County, Georgia, and Florence Elizabeth, b-1860, Covington, Newton County, Georgia. FLORENCE ELIZABETH BATES married JULIUS HILLIARD DICKSON, and they had at least eleven children. One of their grandsons, WILLIE ARTHUR PILGRAM, said (in a letter I found) that they were "double cousins" of My Great Grandfather, WILLIAM WEBSTER BATES. Reportedly W.W. was raised by a Coker sister, but I don't know who.. Does anyone have any of the above family in their records? Thank you, LaShelle http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/6097
