    3. Here's the file that has the old Pattern naming conventions, taking a long time ago from The Source BBS. I think you hit it right on the noxe, AudeeG. Families do use maiden names as first or middle names for their offspring. Sometimes it followed a "Naming Pattern" in which the first born male was named for his father's father etc including a sequence for the female children. (I have forgotten the patterns. I once had it on a sheet hanging on my monitor but it faded so much it became useless.) In my own family, I had an aunt of the Bates surname who married a Gentry. One of their sons was christened Bates Gentry. In another case. I did not know the maiden name of a great-great grandmother Robinson. One day I discovered her burial place in Mississippi and beside her was buried a young man named Richmond Love Robinson. It had a familiar ring so I looked at the descendant children of the next two generations. In one generation there was a Sadie Love Bates. In the next their was a Rema Love Bates. It didn't take much mulling over to decide that great-great grandmother Robinson's maiden name was Love. According to the census of 1850, she was born in SC. Someday I hope to find a nest of Loves in SC who may be her family. Hang in there and keep looking. You'll find your answer, sometime when you least expect it. 1. BATES/FLEMMING/GARRETSON
    2. MY GGF IS: William "BATES" GARRETSON b.1847 in Jefferson Co. Ohio m/ Carrie L. HAYNES. father is Joseph and gf in John of PA. Knowing that families uses mother and grandmother's maiden names, my quest is for a BATES/GARRETSON connection. Or did his parents just like the name??? In reviewing Hinshaw's book, I find a great deal of info of the above names in the same areas of Quaker families. In the early census index of Jefferson Co., there are many BATES & GARRETSONs and a sprinkling of FLEMINGs. Any and all help will be appreciated Audrey

    3. I am looking for information on Fleming Bates who married Catherine Talbot in Halifax County, VA. Catherine had several children by a previous marriage and I do not know her maiden name. Fleming and Catherine had a son James Flournoy Bates who was my great grandfather. The people at Bates Family of Old Virginia say that Fleming and Catherine were never married and Fleming had a previous marriage with several children. These children are listed as Talbots in the 1850 census but in the 1860 census they are listed as Bates. Ginny Tobin - [email protected]

    1. Re: Fleming BATES
    2. Linda, I am not a descendant of Fleming, but i need some help with him and cronies. My ggggrmo Margaret Bates married a guy named Alexander Clark. They appeared in old Abbeville District about 1779, about the time, or shortly before the arrival of Stephen and Fleming Bates. Altho Stephen died in 1788, he and Fleming were thick as thieves with my grandpaw Alex. Clark. I have been studying Alex for 30 years and cant find anything about him. The repetion of names, similarities, etc, indicate that my Margaret Bates HAS to be related to Fleming and in some way. The Old Bates Family of Virginia has assured me that she is not, but I cant buy that yet. Alex and Margaret had a daughter, Elizabeth, b.19 Dec 1790 who married Robert Foster Jr. on 28 Dec 1802. Then Fleming died in 1804, and Alex Clark Jr. went to Illinois in 1805 and Alex Clark Sr. drops off the records in Abbeville. wha happened? Any suggestions appreciated. renwick bradley

    3. I have some information about one of the sources I listed from my previous message. The "Register" is the published proceedings of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society (NEHGS). I recently returned from a visit in Boston and joined that society. The library is fantastic which was the reason I could add four new families to my ancestral line back to the first immigrant or earlier. What I'd like to share with the Bates mail list is that I purchased the complete publication of the Register on CD-ROM. Although I haven't done much research with it (it is in FTM format and restricts queries to a specific name over 8 CD-ROM disks), I will be researching the Bates name and, of course, include my finds here. Let me get comfortable with the "new toy" and I'll do look up's for those New England Bate/Bates that are available. Bob Jenkins On 2 May 98 at 18:52, [email protected] I wrote: > I came across the following which may be of some importance to the Bates > families.
