    1. [BASS-MOSES] Merry Christmas!
    2. Hello and Merry Christmas to all Moses Bass list members ~~~~~ A tribal elder has recommended that those who are descendants of Moses Bass, born 1800 in North Carolina, begin a study group to explore our likely Chowan roots. I am hoping we can get a volunteer to take a DNA test.  The candidate must have the Bass surname and be a male. A few of us have been working on the Moses Bass tree, trying to find living descendants who may have more pictures and bits of history to add. We have posted the tree to Ancestry.com.  Some branches are incomplete. I hope that all of you will have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Shirley

    1. [BASS-MOSES] From a Descendent of Nimrod Fender
    2. Shirley, >A woman in Raleigh is looking up documents for us. That is good. >I guess what ever you have that gives insight as far as their movement >north. We don't know what you have..... Do you know exactly what year they >moved north, for instance? No, I don't know exactly, however, I have an approximation. I do know the following: 1.) Both John and Sarah Fender Bass (Sam's paternal grandparents) died in Lawrence Co., IN. Sarah was born in Ashe Co., NC, in part of the Co. that became Alleghany Co. in 1859. It is believed John was also born there, too, as his father's homeplace in Surry Co. (all of Surry resting south of the Yadkin River was named Yadkin Co., NC, in 1850) was way too far away from Sparta where Sarah lived for them to have courted/dated. 2.) Sam's mother, Elizabeth Jane Sheeks, was born in Lawrence Co., IN, and his father, Daniel Bass, was born in Ashe Co., NC, in part of the Co. that became Alleghany Co. in 1859) and died in Lawrence Co., IN. 3.) Daniel and Elizabeth were married Oct. 22, 1840 in Lawrence Co., IN. This puts this particular BASS line in IN by 1840 when Daniel was 19. >Any Bass documents at all? I have none. >Any mention of Basses in the Fender documents? I have one.....Nimrod Fender's Will. Nimrod was Sarah Fender Bass' father. WILL OF NIMROD FENDER, OWEN CO., INDIANA 31 January 1849 I, NIMROD FENDER, of the County of Owen and State of Indiana, do make and publish this my Last Will and Testament revoking all former wills by me at any time made. First, I direct that my body be decently interred and as to such worldly estate as it has pleased God to entrust me with, I dispose of the same in the following manner, to wit: I direct first that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon after my decease as possible out of the moneys that shall come to the hands of my executor from that portion of my estate. I direct that my beloved wife, if she be living at the time of my decease, to have two cows and the one-third of all my estate and at her----dispose of the same as she may see proper and in case of my surviving her, then at my ---, I direct my executor to call two disinterested, evitable [sic] persons to appraise and value all my estate, including my household furniture and sell the same for money with a credit of nine months. I also, direct that my executor give notice to each and all of my children, if alive and if not, representatives as herein---after directed, of the time of said sale, if convenient, if not as soon after as may be convenient for him to do so. And I further direct that after the payment of debts and expenses, that the remainder of my estate, whatever there may be, equally divided amongst my sons and daughters, share and share alike, that this exception of my son DANIEL FENDER and my daughter SARAH BASS, each of them having already had more than their proportional share. I direct then that the distribution be made in the following manner or order, to wit: That my son, ABSALOM FENDER, have one equal share and that my son, DANIEL FENDER, have the sum of $1.00, he having been advanced more than his distributive share and that my daughter, POLLY EDWARDS, have one equal share and that my daughter, NANCY KROUSE, have one equal share and that my daughter SUSAN CONNELLEY, have one equal share and that my son, JOHN FENDER, have one equal share and that my son, DAVID FENDER, have one equal share and that my daughter, ELIZABETH MITCHELL, have one equal share, but instead of the share that would be coming to ELIZABETH MITCHELL, I direct that her share be divided equally amongst her children, share and share alike; that her husband, ISAAC MITCHELL should survive said ELIZABETH MITCHELL, never ----- is said ELIZABETH'S share to be ----- in any way so as to ever placed it in the hands of her husband, ISAAC MITCHELL, either directly or indirectly, and that my daughter, SARAH BASS, have the sum of $1.00, she having been advanced more than his distributive share, and that my daughter, FRANCES BEASLEY, have one equal share. I also, direct that if any of my sons and daughters should die before the time of such distribution, the heirs of their bodies of such deceased, are to be entitled to such share as their respectable ancestors would have been entitled to receive. And, I hereby make and ordain my son, DAVID FENDER, Executor of this my Last Will and Testament. In Witness whereof, I NIMROD FENDER, the testator have hereunto set my hand and seal, by my mark, this 31st day of January, in the year of our Lord, 1849. 2. Does anyone on the list live in Indiana who can assist with this? If not, finding a researcher may work best. Shirley ************** Hi Shirley, Below is information I just received from the Indiana State Library. It is the listing of land deeds involving Moses Bass (as grantee and grantor) in Lawrence County Indiana between the 1820s and the 1850s. Now I can try to find a way to get photocopies of the deeds themselves. Please do pass this along to any on our list you think might be interested. Best regards, Rod ********** Rodney R. 1. [BASS-MOSES] Information Received
    2. Hello, First the good news: A woman from North Carolina just called to say that there are four documents at the Department of Archives in Raleigh. They are all inventories of settlements of estates - apparently no wills. Two are dated 1819 and two are dated 1821 - one for Catherine and three for Moses. The bad news: The two pieces of information I received from the Genealogy Society in Surry County were a very nice write up of research by Anne Whitaker McCracken (who is on this mailing list) and the Bible records for Henry Bass, born 1825. Some of Henry's older children were born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and younger children born in Surry County, NC in the 1850's. Does anyone on the list live in North Carolina? Thank you, Shirley

    1. Re: [BASS-MOSES] Has anyone on the list seen this Bass Bible Record?
    2. I sent a formal letter and a check last week. I fear that it will just be some other branch and not the lines we want. However, we need to keep a list and just work down it - in order to make any progress on finding new stuff. I think this family has been researched up the ying-yang and there isn't anything new. I was looking through things you got at the Ft. Wayne library. There was a Bass Index you made copies of - a few critical pages. Pretty cool. I sent copies of several pages of Japanese genealogy to Salt Lake and a Japanese Mormon sister from Japan is currently going through it to translate it and hopefully it will be on the net eventually. It was very detailed. She said it was beautiful. And my aunt had said that other Japanese people told her it was beautiful. We can't figure out what they mean - unless it is the style of calligraphy or something. No progress on Sarah Jane Adams. I've almost given up. I do think she may have grown up in Taney County, Missouri. If the whole batch traveled together. 1. Re: [BASS-MOSES] "Why Quakers left NC"
    2. This message just posted to the Surry County Rootsweb mailing list: I am back to my Surry County research after a year or so long break. I am inspired by a recent visit with my children's grandfather. He lived in Surry county almost continuously from his birth in 1925 to 1955. He is now 82 years old and very reminicent and sentimental about his days in Surry County. I have a question. I have been using the BMD records at Ancestry. Can someone explain the use of the marriage bond to me. I noticed some bonds were taken as early as 4-5 years before the marriage took place. I also wanted to let you know, the rootsweb quaker e-mail list is currently have a discussion that might be of interest: "Why Quakers left NC." Susan Petersen Sutter County, CA
