"August Court Proceedings of 1767 - from an Abstract of Pittsylvania County Court, Chatham Va. ".....Barton's Examination. James Barton was taken and brought before this Court on suspicion of feloniously stealing two negro slaves, and being examined on behalf of our Sovereign Lord, The King, on consideration whereof the Court is of the opinion that ther said James Barton ought to be remanded to prison for a further examination, and that he be admitted to bail on giving good security for his appearance to receive further examination, and that the slaves be confined until such examination or admission to bail."
