He married Rhoda Carver April 26, 1771 in Providence, RI20, daughter of Joseph Carver and Sarah Hartwell. Notes for William Barton: Fought in Revolutionary War and captured Prescott. Gen. Barton entered the Revolutionary army in 1775 as a corporal, and was repidly advanced to captain. He was appointed colonel of militia for the defense of Rhode Island. In 1777 he concelved and executed the daring exploit of capturing Gen. Prescott. He was made Gen. of Militia, and was later wounded in a skirmish with the British at Bristol, R. I. He was elected to the General Assembly from Providence. As the result of a law suit, the cost of which he refused, in principle, to pay, he was "detained" in Donville, Vt., for fourteen years, until set at liberty by Lafayette, who discharged the debt.
