    1. [BARTON-L] Rev. Isaac Barton
    2. Since posting a reply to an inquiry about the Rev. Isaac Barton, I have seen a couple of other postings. There seems to be some confusion about his ancestors. Evidently the confusion stems from an attempt a good number of years ago at hiring a professional genealogist to trace the lineage. It was known at that time that the Rev. Isaac Barton's father was Joshua Barton. A Joshua Barton was discovered in Massachusetts and it apparently was assumed to be the Joshua Barton who was the Rev. Isaac Barton's father. Since that time, however, additional research has shown that not to be the case. According to the records of the Tipperary (Ireland) Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, "Isaac Barton of Killaloe, son of Christopher and Dorothy Barton of Killaloe, married Sarah Vesey, daughter of Tobias and Anne Vesey of Limerick, 6th of 10th month 1705". In an account written by the Rev. Isaac Barton in 1821, he indicated that his "father was the 3rd or 4th son of a widow woman, who moved to Md. from some of the Northeastern states. She had 5 sons and one daughter if no more - Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joshua, Benjamin and Elizabeth who married John Carmuch. She afterwards married a man by the name of Jones by whom she had one son named Thomas. The two oldest, Abraham and Isaac, were bound to the shoemakers trade and never came to Md., as I have heard." The widow woman mentioned was Sarah Vesey Barton, who did marry Robert Jones. Isaac Barton in May, 1721 in Chester Co., PA. His will dated May 18, 1721, mentions his wife (Sarah) and his seven children (Abraham, Isaac, Mary, Elizabeth, Jacob, Joshua, and Benjamin). Again, there has been some confusion concerning the Rev. Isaac Barton's ancestors and information which appears to have been compiled in error will not be undone overnight. As mentioned in my previous reply, I am a member/officer of the Barton Family Association, a family group who are descendants from Isaac Barton and Sarah Vesey Barton. In 1988, a two-volume book (nearly 1,300 pages) was printed compiling this Barton family. Unfortunately, it is out of print. I am also a member of the Historical Preservation Committee of the Barton Family Association, and we are hopeful of updating and re-issuing a new book, hopefully within the next 5 years.
