I have all of Clara Barton's ancestors in Oxford, MA which goes back to Edward, Matthew, Samuel. Her father was Capt Stephen Barton 1774 - 1862 , his father was "Dr. Stephen, then to Edmund and into Samuel. I will quote you what this booklet says , written by Rev. William E. (Rev). The suirname of Barton first appears in New England records among the early Puritan settlers at Salem, Edward Barton is the first-mentioned of the name. It is possible butr not probable that he was related to Roger Barton, (New York) and to Rufus Barton who settled in Rhode Island about the same time. In the seventeenth century there were several famialies of Bartons in the American Colonies but it is doubtful if all the early Bartons in America were related., Salem was the home of two Barton families, possibly not closely related but probably descended from the same English family the Bartons of Lancashire. One of these Salem families was founded by Dr. John Barton who came in 1672 lived first at Marblehead and moved to Salem in 1676 where many of his descendants lived. The other Salem family was descended from Edward Barton who arrived in 1640. This Edward Barton was the progenitor of the family that forms the subject of this article. I have always just kept them separated. We go back to Rufus and Margaret. I have more Oxford VR and also Salem, Spencer. Anything else that would be helpful?
