    1. Re: [BARTON-L] BARTONs of Hadfield, Kent, England

    3. Thanks Douglas. First, apologies to all, I should have said Hadlow, Kent, but I'm sure you all spotted that typo <g>. The county of Kent is roughly 60 miles E/W and 30 miles N/S. Known as the Garden of England it has for a long time been intensively cultivated and would always have had quite a high relative population density. In 1881 the population was 1 million out of a total of 30 million for Great Britain. Bethersden is about 30 miles from Hadlow, far enough to make any family connection unlikely. There was certainly a long line of BARTONs from Hadlow. Of the 2,822 BARTON baptismal entries in the British Isles shown in the British Vital Records Index, 550 were in the county of Kent and 329 were in the tiny village of Hadlow (1558 to 1860). That's not a very reliable statistic, however, as the BVRI is only a sample and many parishes in Kent are not covered but it suggests quite a high concentration in Hadlow even so.
