This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Barton / Mitchell Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xZC.2ACIB/2340 Message Board Post: Hello! I am hoping one of you (or more) can help with my quest for information on my line. Just this week I found documentation that indicates that my GGGGrandfather was named Robert or Roswell or Robert Roswell Barton (one dau listed Robert Barton as her father on her marriage application, another listed her father's name as Roswell Barton - we have proof that both share the same mother - so we assume that Robert and Roswell were the same person). Robert Roswell (went by Roswell most often) was probably born in VA (per his children's census documents). He married Susannah Mitchell. She was born in KY in abt 1792 (Susannah may or may not have been married before Roswell). They probably married in KY or in IL. Based on their children's birth locations (on census records) Roswell and Susannah must have lived in IL, but apparently traveled back to KY for a visit - or lived their briefly (since a middle child claims to have been born in KY) then came back to IL. One daugher's marriage application states that she was born in Bullard Co., KY in abt 1825. I can't find a Bullard - there is a Ballard - but their court house burned and lost all records before 1880. I also think there is a Ballard, KY - a city - I need to do more research on that. I suspect Roswell and Suannah divorced, Susannah married a second time in Vigo Co., IN in 1828. Her second husband was Simon Andrew Peters. They ALL lived in the Clark Co., IL area (Vigo Co., IN is just over the stateline). I suspect, based on local records, that Roswell died in the mid to late 1830's. I cannot find Roswell on any census records or other records after abt. 1835. I suspect that he was connected to Rhode Barton, the fellow that married Mary Black in Clark Co., IL. Perhaps an older brother - or cousin. Based on his wife's age - if you can do that - Roswell may have been born between 1775 - 1795. For those of you that are researching Joesph of England's line - I suspect our Roswell may be a grand-child of one of Jospeh II's children - perhapsThomas' (His son's were Kimber; Levi; Eli; James; Joseph; and John) . Thomas' son James had a son named Roswell b. ca 1778. Could that Roswell have married twice or three times? At first I didn't think so - but now I wonder. Their Roswell disappears after 1810 to OH, ours appears in the mid 1820's w/ a wife and at least 3 children (w/ a poss. fourth). An, there could be an OH connection too - since Susannah's second husband was in OH before his move to the IN/IL area. Perhaps a promise of free or cheap land, milder winters or better crops brought a group of settlers from OH to the area. And, last but not least, the two Roswells sound like they had similar personality traits - they were both a bit hot headed (a trait that seems to have carried on in my line)! Both were arrested on assault and battery charges (today's Bartons aren't that bad - no arrested yet). The KY Roswell was charged in Pendleton Co., KY - my Roswell was charged in Clark Co., IL - the first charge is dated 1825 (there were a few). The last one in Apr 1835 - and we can't find any more on him after that. Did he move from the area and start using the name Robert all of the time? However, if the two Roswells are not one in the same person, I do suspect that one of Joseph the II's other sons prob. fathered our Roswell. (James' son John was Rhodes' father.) Please help if you can! Cec Barton-Murrah
I tried to find Susannah and Roswell, but could not on ancestry.com. Would love to see the records you have been fortunate to locate. sharon ----- Original Message ----- From: <cec@imagesverite.com> To: <BARTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 26, 2006 3:13 PM Subject: [BARTON] Roswell Barton > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Barton / Mitchell > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xZC.2ACIB/2340 > > Message Board Post: > > Hello!
