Thank you so much for pointing out the fact that in England Barton is a very common name. In the time when freemen were allowed to become landowners it was very common for people to take the name of the town from which they came. Thus a man would be called "John of Barton or Thomas of Barton". This allowed for many unrelated families to end up with the same surname. Using this practise those of us trying desperatly to find our links to the old world may be somewhat out of luck. As one of the names in my family is Jones, I am becoming familier with the proverbial brick wall. Some real documentation would really help alot. L Barton
