Dorothy, based on your reference to IGI sheets for MD and VA, I am trying to tie my ggggGrandfather Lewis Barton of Caswell County NC with the Lewis Barton family of Baltimore County MD which, I have been told, had part of its family going to Caswell County (then part of Orange County) NC in the later 1700s. However, I have not found anything factual to verify that migration or who exactly was involved. If I could, it might add at least four generations to my Barton line! My Lewis Barton's Will was executed 25 July 1831 in Caswell County NC. What little information I have makes no reference to his wife. His executors were a son Aquilla (my gggGrandfather b. <1790 in Caswell County) and daughter Elizabeth. Other children included sons John, Elisha, and Lewis, plus daughters Mary Denny and Sarah Simmons (presumedly both married), Zelpha, and Rebecca. The book, "Baltimore County Families, 1659 - 1759", identifies an earlier Lewis Barton (b. 24 Feb 1737, m. 30 June 1757 to Johanna Simmons) with one son James, b. 19 Feb 1758, listed. Since the book only goes to 1759, did Lewis and Johanna (Simmons) Barton have other children besides James one of which could be my ggggGrandfather Lewis Barton??? Were Lewis and Johanna (Simmons) Barton part of the clan that went to Orange/Caswell County NC in the later 1700s? On the older end of the spectrum, this Lewis' ggGrandfather was a still earlier Lewis Barton who "was transported to MD as a servant by 1674", but later purchased some land in May 1688. However, it doesn't say from where he was transported--England, the New England colonies or wherever. I am curious if the earliest Lewis was a member of any of the New York or New England Barton's that I have read so much about. Thanks for any light you can shine on questions. Jerry L.
