YOU may be the man I have been looking for! If it looks plausible, I will split the cost of a DNA test. I have been desperately looking for a male who descends from my Valentine. Terry Barton is quite convinced that I descend from that same VA Northern Neck Bartons, but MY Valentine is definitely not that one in a family found in Bedford Co, VA. in 1810,1820. If the formatting falls apart on this and if you can get attachments, send me your email address and I will send the stuff as an attachment Barton I descend from Valentine Barton, and his wife Elenor Moore. Perrin, Battle and Kniffen's KY history says that Valentine's second of seven children, John, was born in Prince William Co, VA in 1803. His first son was apparently James. Additional children as named in Valentine's estate record (Division and settlement, Boone Co., 1835, Will Bk. B) are William, Augustus, Alsey Barton McGlasson (my gr gr grandmother), Eleanor Barton Conner, and Mary. Mary later married Joshua Arnold. According to the history cited above, the Bartons immigrated to Kentucky about 1812, settling on the Ohio River about two miles below Petersburg, Boone County, but purchased land across the river in Dearborn Co., Indiana, where Aurora is now. Valentine sold his Indiana land a few years later and bought 150 acres in Boone Co, later expanding his holding to about 300 acres. This land was divided among his heirs. In the late 1800's, son John was still living on his portion. The name Valentine Barton first appears, as far as I can show, in 1669 on a List of Servants Brought to Maryland on the Nightingale Ketch out of Hull, by Barnes. One source says that this Valentine is the brother of the Capt. William Barton who arrived earlier. One difficulty is that according to ships' lists, (Early Virginia Immigrants by Geo. Greer) there were three William Bartons who arrived Maryland in the 1600's, one in 1636, one in 1639 and one in 1653, as well as a John in 1652. Now everyone wants to claim descent from William, the ship's captain, a more prosperous and prominent William Barton, but it is not clear to me how they are so sure they do. Another researcher believes that Valentine is the brother of the Thomas Barton who arrived in Maryland a few years earlier than Valentine, and rather soon thereafter, moved into Virginia. There is also a Valentine Barton recorded in N. Carolina in a will record in Albemarle Co, 6 March 1685, 24 March 1686, naming wife Hannah, brothers-in-law Wm. Fyam and Jos. Williams, and "my Friends", Hannah Ford and Lady Harrison. No children are mentioned. Barbara Pace who sent me this info, speculates that this might be the Valentine who came in on the Nightingale. 1727 finds a Valentine listed among the Northern Neck grants, acquiring 377 acres betwixt Broad Run and Bull Run in Stafford Co., VA. He is then in Prince William Co. until the estate of Valentine Barton is recorded in 1739, naming widow Anne. A Valentine Barton again shows in Prince William in militia records in 1756. Then there is a Valentine Barton on the tax list of Farquier Co in 1800, along with a Thomas, a Cuthbert and a Levi. But the 1810 census shows a Valentine in Prince William, with 5 children, which seems consistent with my Valentine. By the 1820 census, my Valentine is as noted above, in Boone Co, KY. There also is a Valentine Barton in Bedford Co, VA, in the early 1800's that is probably related, since this family also seems to have come from the Northern Neck area. It strikes me as quite likely the Pendleton Co, KY Bartons are kin, but of course old E.E. of the Barton papers wanted them to be kin to the rather more respectable New England Bartons. I spent a little time in Falmouth with his papers and found them less than convincing. (Later note. I have "learned", I guess, that this is not true) What I, of course, want to find, is the parents and siblings of my Valentine, as well as the immigrant ancestor, who may or may not be that old Valentine on the Nightingale Ketch. I will cheerfully take him--indentured is better than pulled out of jail and transported. I have the Barton material from Alcock's book Five Generations of the Family of Burr Harrison of Virginia. That might be my Valentine. Barbara Pace believes that Alcott needed to do more research on the relationship of the MD and Stafford Co, VA Bartons. It is clear my Valentine was never a wealthy man. I have a copy of his estate settlement. He left around 275 acres and about a dozen slaves when he died some time before 1830. He must have been at least 45 by then.
