Dear Offended (and xmaself): In fact X is the greek letter chi (pronounced kai). In Greek, it is the first letter of Christ. In some congregations, there is a Christ symbol with the greek letters chi superimposed above the letter Rho, which looks a bit like a small p. Chi + Ro + Christ. It's a bit like using a fish as a symbol for Jesus, not at all suggesting that he is smelly. Xmas means Christ-mas. ron stockton ============================ Jgweret@aol.com wrote: > This is to _xmaself@comcast.net_ (mailto:xmaself@comcast.net) . > > The term XMAS was started and used instead of Christmas by non -Christians. > If you are a believer, you might change your e-mail address to something > other than Xmas Elf. > > Thanks. > > Offended John > All messages posted to this mailing list are the property of their writers. And to try to bring this back on-topic, I'd also point out that X is used as an abbreviation (Xtian for Christian is an example that comes to mind) *all over* the 17th and 18th century church records I've studied.
