There is a George Barton who died in Andersonville. He was from Indiana. His name appears to be George W. with the W standing for Washington (big surprise). he also had an uncle named William so it is possible that he was George William. Because of the way naming patterns repeated from generation to generation these issues get very confusing. If anyone wants to know more about this George Barton from Indiana please contact me at Rstock@Umich.edu. ron stockton Quoting sparks06524@yahoo.com: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xZC.2ACIB/2255.2 > > Message Board Post: > > What state was George William probably from? > > Doug > > > > ==== BARTON Mailing List ==== > Please visit the surname mailing list homepage at: > http://genealogy.webhop.org/barton for information on this list, it's > member's pages, queries and other helpful genealogy pages. > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection. He lived from around 1835 to 1901. He was a Union veteran during the Civil war who spent some time in a Confederate prison camp in Florida or Georgia, perhaps even Andersonville. His brother was Joshua E. Barton. Joshua's son was my grandfather, Walter E.E. Barton. It's probably not the same family. When you make a posting like this it's good to state the region and approx dates. Good luck! Doug

Hi guys; I am new to the list and have a mystery on my hands. My great great grandfather Alfred Perry GRIZZARD (b. 13 Sep 1824 TN, d. 03 Oct 1914 Fannin County, TX) married a BARTON woman from New Orleans in the late 1800's. Alfred Perry GRIZZARD first lived in Nashville, TN, then moved to Fannin County, Texas. I assume that he was in Fannin County, Texas when he married this BARTON. I have yet to find any concrete documentation of this marriage, other than stories my mother told me about the marriage.. Family members admired this BARTON woman telling stories of what a good woman she was. I have this woman's bible which later became the GRIZZARD family bible This BARTON woman had a niece Estelle BARTON (b. 02 Oct 1871, d. after 1910 Terrell, TX), who came to Fannin County, Texas for a visit and married Alfred Perry GRIZZARD's son James Marshall GRIZZARD (b. 26 Dec 1853, d. 13 Jun 1938 Fannin County, TX) on 20 Nov 1902. They had one child Barton Marshall GRIZZARD (b. 25 Aug 1903, d. 27 Aug 1903). The family story has it that Estelle Barton GRIZZARD was never quite right and the loss of her child pushed her over the edge and she was committed to Terrell State Hospital and lived her remaining years in the asylum. Estelle BARTON's parents were Abselem/Absalem Allen BARTON (b. abt. 1820 GA, d. bet. 1880 -1900) and Clara ROSS (b. 16 Dec 1830 Troup County, GA, d. 23 Oct 1912, Fannin County, TX). They married 30 May 1849 in Chambers, AL. Abselem and Clara's children, besides Estelle were: Sarah M. BARTON b. 1850 Montgomery County, AL Isaac Ross BARTON b. abt 1853 AL Lizzie BARTON b. 1865 Macon County, AL Mary E. BARTON, b. abt 1857 Macon County, AL William BARTON, b. 1859 Macon County, AL H. G. BARTON, b. abt. 1858 Macon County, AL Abselem Allen BARTON, b. 1859 Macon County, AL Leonora BARTON, b. 1865, Macon County, AL C.O. BARTON, b. 1869, Macon County, AL This family can be found in the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1800 census in AL, then in the 1900 census Clara Ross BARTON can be found in Lamar County, TX as HOH widowed. I am trying to find Abselem's siblings and parents and try to figure out what his sister's name was that married my great great grandfather Alfred Perry GRIZZARD, their marriage date and anything else about Abselem BARTON's roots and family line. I have pictures of Estelle Barton Grizzard and can share what little BARTON family info that is recorded in the family bible. Warm regards from east Texas; Nancy Merritt
