Author: emuwally Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.barton/2539.2.1.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: THE BARTON BOOK is put together by: BARTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY PO BOX 495 LYMAN, SC 29365 The BARTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY in October of 2006 put on a Barton Family Retreat at the Look-Up Lodge north of Greenville, SC. My wife Lee Ann and I attended and had a great time meeting new distant cousins. I thought we would get a prize for the family traveling the farthest, but, a cousin from Wales beat us out The highlight of the Retreat was the dedication of a large memorial marker at the original homestead siteof our ggggg grandfather Thomas Barton b. 1723-1790 and his wife Sarah Wilson. They had moved there from VA in about 1769. They could not go any further West at that time because no white man was allowed to cross the Pacolet River because on the west side of the Pacolet was Cherokee land. All for now, if I can be of further help, email me. Wally Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: mandy1612 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.barton/2138.3.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Debbie, William Simpson, born 1846, was the son of William Simpson, b. 1812 and Maria Saville b. 1811. He would have resided in or around Philadelphia, and been a partner in William Simpson and Sons, the textile mills his father started. William Simpson Sr. was also the son of a William Simpson, born in Manchester, England, and emigrated to the United States as a boy. Other children of William and Maria are: Thomas, b. 1844, James. b. 1848, Mary, b. 1850 (my direct ancestor), and Ellen, b. 1853. I do see a census record for a William Simpson (1880), born about 1846, and married to Caroline Sitler, with daughter Fannie, living with Caroline's brother Benjamin. All report their parents also born in Pennsylvania, and William reports his employment as laborer (U.S. Census > 1880 United States Federal Census > Pennsylvania > Columbia > Center > District 170). I don't think this is the same William Simpson as my ancestor, as his parents were both born in England, and he would have reported his employment as being an executive with the family mills. I hope this gives you some good information to advance your research. I have attached the census record I referenced above. Warm regards, Mandy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
