    1. [BARTON-L] FROM THE LISTOWNER: Worm Alert
    2. Mike and Christi Brogan
    3. Dear listers, Just wanted to get this out there since it has been verified and is an actual threat to those on the lists. First let me say that you CANNOT get this or any other virus' from your rootweb lists because the lists do NOT allow attachments which are the cause for virus'. Ok, here is the situation. There is a "worm" called Happy99.exe that has been circulating some of the folks on Rootsweb lists. It has been replicating itself because of the way it works through individual emails to one another (not listmail). Folks, the best idea in this case is to NEVER execute an attachement from anyone you don't know and, in this particular instance, don't execute Happy99.exe even if you know the source. The problem with this particular worm is that YOU don't know that it is being sent. In other words, if you are infected, you will be unknowingly sending out this worm because it acts on it's own. So, people who you know and trust may unknowingly be sending out this worm. The way it acts is thus: When executed, it displays this cutesy little fireworks show on your screen and "Happy New Years 1999!", while it is doing it's damage. It creates files, copies files etc. and then all messages you post to newsgroups and all emails you send will have the Happy99.exe file attached. Now, Rootsweb does not allow attachements, so the message would be rejected, but that would be one of your first clues that you are infected. Other than self-replication, the worm does not do any known damage. The best advice is to get a good virus checking program and run it at all times. McAfee and Norton are both good bets (and yes, the newest versions (and updates) of McAfee do check for and clean this worm) My advice (as a computer consultant and as a user) is to never execute something you receive via email unless you first scan it with your virus program. Being the wife of a computer hacker (who enjoys virii) I have learned the hard way what happens when one of my husband's buddies emails something and I don't scan it first :) So, Rule # 1 is don't send virus "alerts" to the list without clearing them with the listowner first (and I'm always around :) ) Rule #2 NEVER accept an attachement from an unknown source and always virus scan any attachements you receive Rule #3 Get yourself a good virus protection program and run it :) Rule #4 Have fun and let's get back to GENEALOGY!!! :) :) :) If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact me directly. Thanks! 1. [BARTON-L] William Henry BARTON 1843-1901
    2. John Milsom
    3. I'm looking for help from BARTON interests in the USA..........and I may be able to add some value. William Henry BARTON was born in 1843 in Lacock, Wiltshire, England. He was there on 30 March 1851, described as aged 6, scholar. He is said to have married Kate CHAPMAN in 1863 in London though I've not checked that yet. I know nothing else about her. They are then supposed to have emigrated to the USA in the same year and to have settled in "Lyons". I don't know which one but Wayne County, NY seems the most likely. He came from a family which had farming, malting and brewing interests though his father was a grocer and baker - and later the church organist. They reportedly had six children of which only one survived into adulthood. She was Kate BARTON and, although she might have married (there seems to be some doubt), she did not have any children. William Henry died in 1901 and is said to have been buried in Oakland Cemetery - again, I don't know which one. Bergen County, NJ is not that far away but after nearly 40 years he could have gone anywhere! My interest in him is because he was the brother of my gr gr grandfather. I can trace his parents, his 4 grandparents and one pair of gr grandparents (we are back to about 1740 and my gr gr gr gr gr grandparents by then!). So, is there anyone who might be able to trace him? I seem to remember reading of some records made of burials at an Oakland cemetery but can't remember where I saw it! Can you point me to anything? And, if you have an interest in BARTONs in Wiltshire, England, I may have come across them - they certainly seemed very productive in the last century and, as a result, they were settled all over the area! 2. In two years of monitoring the Barton L site, I have yet to see any query regarding the original Prussian Barthens AKA Barton and/or Barten in America. So it is time I ask: If you are out there; will any descendants of Sebastian, or Jacob, or Caspar Barthen AKA Barten or Barton please respond. My Great Grandfather Johannes Barthen b. 1792 Lieser, Prussia d. 1864 m. Susanna Hower. Three of his sons, (Jakob, Kaspar, and Sebastian) and one daughter (Barbara) immigrated to America from 1850 to 1854. The American families of these siblings are well documented. And most of the descendants of the sons and daughter who remained in Prussia have been located. 3. Re: BOMAR of CAMPBELL CO., GA IS THIS A NEW LIST? I'm shocked to not have more complete data here on my office PC --- my primary research notes are on my Mac at home!
