There must be a lateral to my Rufus family somehow. Would be >delighted to know how. Betsey, My wife's family also had the idea that Clara Barton was a distant cousin. I spent several years trying to prove that connection. Last year I finally connected my wife back to Rufus Barton (1606-1648) of Warwick, RI. If there is a connection with Clara Barton, it would be only if her ancestor Edward and Rufus Barton were related in a previous generation. In my online database at http://www.angelfire.com/tx/royc I have indicated that Edward's father is Marmaduke Barton and that Marmaduke and Rufus are brothers. Both of these are unproven, but it allows me to put them all in one connected database. I am fairly sure that Rufus had a brother Roger and they were both in Manhatten as early as 1642 when Rufus was driven out by the Duch because of his Quaker orientation and removed to Rhode Island. Here is a little authoritative information on Rufus and Roger Barton: The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, July 1928, page 239 contains an article entitled The Descendants of Solomon Barton of Duchess County, New York, and Monkton, Vermont. It starts out: Ancestry: It has been stated that the original ancestor in America of Solomon Barton was Edward Barton, a sea-captain, who brought his family from England and settled in Barbadoes Island. No printed record of this has been located, although it is said to exist in the Barbadoes. The same uncertain source is responsible for the statement that two sons of Edward, namely Roger and Rufus came to the Island of Manhattan about 1641 from Barbadoes. Rufus, very shortly afterwards went into the English colony at Providence, R. I., and was the founder of the Barton family of that Section. Roger settled amongst the Dutch and in August, 1642, leased land of the Reverend Everardus Bogardus, second husband of Anneke Jans, on Manhattan. However, in the July 1951 edition of The American Genealogist, page 136, George E. McCracken of Drake University clearly proves it was Rufus Barton, not Roger, who signed the lease. McCraken goes on to indicate Rufus was still on friendly terms with the Dutch in 1642 and he may have stayed out with his lease and not have migrated until 1646. Yes I have the Oxford Bartons including Clara back to Edward./ There is Titus Barton who had children but the John Titus is too far forward for the IGI sheets. I do have as I mentioned all of the IGI sheets for Mass. plus I got from Salt Lake John Barton DEAD which shows his family and Titus is certainly among those. I would love to help you, what generations are us missing? I have so mhch material, for I chased John Nicholas Barton in Mass for years, thinking he was the father of my John until the Census said he was born in R.I. so back for the second time in R.I. The book begins with Edward Barton who immigrated and settled in Essex Co. Mass in about 1632 and the lates born person I can find is John Titus Barton b11/23/1914. Edward was in Salem, Mass by 1640 and later in Exeter NH. Samuel Barton,b1664, d09/12/1732 was Edward's grandson who married Hannah Bridges hwo was the neice of Rebecca Nurse who was hanged as a witch in Salem. They left Salem the year after Rebecca Nurse was hanged and went to Watertown, the Framinghan and then Oxford, Mass. Samuel was the Great Grandfather of Clara Barton who founded the American Red Cross. There is a Captain David Barton who served with Mass units in the Revolutionary War. The remainder of the book follows David Barton's descendants one of whom married Lydia Fuller who is descended from the Mayflower Fullers. The final part of the book has information about Fuller. Couldn't find anything about Bartons in RI. Hope this helped, Kristen Swank Dorothy Muirhead wrote: > Is there anything on the Mass or R.I. Bartons? Larry, Since Alpheus Barton appears to be related to Col William Barton, is there any indication Alpheus descends from Rufus Barton (1606-1648) of Warwick, RI? What really interests me is the mention of Sisson's. My wife's ancestor is Nathan Sisson Barton, born 1791 in Warren, RI, died after 1870 in Calhoun County, MI. I have his ancestry back to Rufus Barton but have not determined the basis for his middle name of Sisson. He was the eighth of eleven children so maybe his parents ran out of ancestral names by then. In my research I have seen many Sissons who appeared to be fellow travelers with the Bartons during their migration from RI and throughout NY. I don't have Alpheus Barton in my online (or offline) database, but I do have many descendants of Rufus Barton available from my web page http://www.angelfire.com/tx/royc by clicking on "My wife's Barton line." I just finished transcribing Alvin Barton's Family History written in 1846. Alvin was born 1793 and was the son of Jonathan Barton and grandson of Timothy Barton. You can find it on my web page if you are interested. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/6804/rosemary.html Rosemary Markham
I have a unpublished (I believe) Barton book: The Barton Family Records by Loren C. Barton with some info provided by Mrs. Lydia (Barton) Fisher and Eva Barton. Must have been written in late 1950's as latest dates are 1957. Was typed on old manual typewriter and copyed. Sent to known relatives. My mom had an original copy that was destroyed in a fire, luckily I had made copies. This starts with Alpheus Barton down thru Barton's and Sisson's, and mentions Col William Barton as being a cousin of Alphius (sic). Larry
There is another "Barton Book" called Genealogy of the Barton Family of the Town of Marshall, Oneida County, New York. Compiled by Edward S. Barton Published in 1920. My Grandmother had an original copy that was given to my mother. It has some general Barton information then part II begins with Edward Barton who came to New England about 1632 in Massachutsets. I have a copy of the book if anyone wants any information. Have been on a l0 yr plus search for info on my grandparents. Gr father and mother arrived Ellis Island, 6/1911 from London. Ernest William and Helen Mary Barton. Stayed Syracuse-to Buffalo, NY. . City directory shows them there 1913 to basically 1923. He born England 17 Feb 1890 M 25 May 19ll Kensington Dist, England, died Sacramento, CA 4/30/1940. Helen Mary born 27 Aug 1890 (could be as early as 1886-she fibbed off and on about her age). He ran and owned B & B Lunch in Buffalo and worked for a tea co.. His father, Arthur Thomas Barton, 31 Dec 1861 born Cross Lane, Whippingham, Isle of Wight, England, his father Henry Dore Barton, born 15 March 1819, Arreton, Isle of Wight, England. His father named John-no other information. Any of your line fit? Jan
I'm looking for information on Dr. Ira Barton, who married Mary Farrar (daughter of Oliver Farrar, b. 1773 Concord [NH?], and Polly or Mary Wheeler, m 1795.) I understand that they are the parents of Mary Helen Barton, my ancestor. Ira may have been born 24 Mar(?) 1796 Some notes I found from my grandmother also mention: * Timothy Stow Barton of Whitingham VT m. Phobe Stone(?) of Dudley Mass. on 20 Jan 1782 * Simon Barton of Monish NY born in Dudley Mass. 30 Oct. 1782, d. at Monish NY 23 Sep 1877. He was a son of Timothy Stow Barton of Benington VT. He married Olive Cary of Hebron NY * "Barton of Croydon VT are descendents of _____ born 1722 killed at Bunker Hill." Possibly the above list refers to Ira's parents somehow. Other notes mention "The Salem Barton's. Dr John Barton was in New England in 1672. Col. Thomas Barton was in Salem in 1710. Samuel Barton m. Hannah Bridges, daugheter of Edmund Bridges. Samuel moved go Framingham in 1693, to Oxford in 1716, d. 12 Sep 1732, will proved 20 Sep 1732. Hannah died 13 Mar 1727. Again, the relationship to Ira is not known. Mary Farrar is found on Family Tree Maker's World Family Tree, Volume 7, tree #1330, which includes about 10 generations back on the Farrar line. Ira Barton is listed there as her husband.
