Any help or contact with this family would be appreciated. Do you have any more information or background on where these BARTONS came from. Mine went from SC to Missouri. They were also in Pendelton Co. Kentucky about 1814. I know that some went to Texas and they tie in with the EARLES some of which also went to Texas. I am wondering because we have some of the same given names that seem to run in my line of Bartons. Washington, Riley, George and Emma. I would love to find the Riley connection. There are also RILEY'S and BARTON'S in Ok and Arkansas. Any help would be appreciated. Sandy
Hi Betsy, Ok. The source for Samuel is pg 3379 of ABRIDGED COMPENDIUM, Frederick Virkus THE ABRIDGED COMPENDIUM OF AMERICAN GENEALOGY FIRST FAMILIES OF AMERICA THE ABRIDGED COMPENDIUM OF AMERICAN GENEALOGY The Standard Genealogical Encyclopedia of THE FIRST FAMILIES OF AMERICA EDITED BY FREDERICK A. VIRKUS VOLUME I 1925 F. A. VIRKUS & COMPANY Genealogical Publishers 440-442 S. Dearborn Street Chicago, Ill which shows a decendancy chart beginning with Samuel. And the source for Margaret Hunnewell, although not a "proven" source, is: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/e/r/Dana-K-Berry/GENE2-0001.html Hope this helps! Dear Harriet, I'm doing research on Texas Bartons, but just really getting started since it was my mother's side. My latest relatives come from Coleman, Co. Texas, but were immigrants from MS, and SC. before that. I had some great uncles who also fought in the Battle of San Jacinto and so there may be some place where we can connect. I'm really wondering if the "Elder" refers to a real name or a name associated with a church title. What was the B. for? Best wishes, Ron English, Killeen,TX
Hi, I just subscribed to this list. I am researching Barton families in Texas by 1835 or so. If anyone is interested, I have extracted all the Barton families that I could find from the Texas 1850 census. I am seeking information on the family of ELDER B. BARTON b. 8 Jan 1823 (or 1820) NY and was in Texas by 1835. He d. 4 Aug 1884 in Nueces Co., TX. He married SANTITOS BALLI (b. 1833, d. 25 Feb 1912 at Edinburg, Hidalgo Co., TX) in Matamoros, MX on 15 Oct 1848. Elder B. Barton fought at the Battle of San Jacinto and was in Capt. Calder's Co. of the Texas Army from Brazoria Co. from 13 Mar 1836-10 Oct 1836. In 1838 he was living in Galveston, TX. Who was ELDER B. BARTON's family? According to his pension record, in 1835, he was living with the family of J. A. H. CLEVELAND in Brazoria Co., TX. Elder B. and his wife Santitos had 16 known children, 2 of whom d. shortly after birth. Their children were named: Washington, Riley, Adelina, Albert, Lucinda, Louisa, Adelaide, Charles, Anna, George, Virginia, Emma, Lionor, and Mary. I have quite of bit of info on TX Barton families that I have accumulated looking for a link. Any help or contact with this family would be appreciated. Hi, what was your source for Samuel? Also what source for Margaret Hunniwell? In Arnold's History of Warwick, no parents are known for Rufus, and Rufus wife is Margaret Stafford. The Town Records show Margaret as the wife of Rufus. You seem to have the names correct as I know them from there on down. There are other sources for Margaret, as well. As she was left a widow when Rufus was killed in 1648, I believe I have seen where the estate was settled. Their son Benjamin was a Town Official in Warwick at its early days. He inherited the original farm which was part of the Cowesett Purchase. Documentation of that information is in the RI Historical Society Vaults. The land was purchased from the Indians. I believe it is Chief Miantonomi's seal on the document. If you have sources for Samuel and Hunniwell, please share. I would want to know. Possibly Margaret remarried, and her 2nd marriage name was Hunniwell. Thanks, Betsey Barton Perra

Hello Willie, I am looking for information on a John Barton of Pickens Co. He was born around 1920, possibly before. He married a Eula Stokes and they lived in McShan, AL and later moved to Aliceville, AL. Do you have any information on them? Thanks... Lynne Davidson Foster Pickens Co. AL
I have quite a bit of info on the Walker County, Al. Bartons. Moses Barton arrived here around 1822 from Pendleton Dst. S.C. and brought his large family with him. Most stayed here but some generations on down the line have moved west. Will be glad to send anything I have on Walker County Bartons to anyone needing it. Willie
A while back someone asked about a Brotherton BARTON. I just caught a bit of the MA VR index of Births for 1871-1875 and found the following: Brotherton B, Barton b Taunton 1871 Vol 232 p 156.
I am also related to the Bartons of R.I. I have Clara Barton's family from Oxford. Her father was Stephen Barton, his father Dr. Stephen Barton 1740 - 1804 His father was Edmund, Samuel Matthew Edward of Oxford, Mass. Quoting from "The Barton Familya of Oxford, Mass. by Rev. William Barton. This is just a little booklet with genealoigy in it. "The surname of Barton first appears in New England records amaong the early Puritan settlers at Salem, in what is now Essex Co. And Edward Barton is the first-mentioned of the name. It is possible, but not probably that he was related to Toger Barton (New York) and to Rufus Barton, who settled in R.I. about the same time. In the seventeenth century there were several famialies of Bartons in the American Colonies, but it is doubtful if all of the early Bartons in America were related, or all the earlier Bartons in Engla,d Scotland, Ireland and Wales. etc etc Many of the earlier Bartons in America lived in places where the records have been destroyed by Indians or fire or were not carefully kept. Salem was the home of two Barton families, [possible not closely related but probably descended from the same Engliah family, the Bartons of Lancashire. One of these Salem families was founded by Dr. John Barton, physician, who came to New England in 1672 lived first at Marblehead, and moved to Salem in 1676, where many of his descendants lived. The other Salem family was descended from Edward Barton, who arrived in Salem about 1640. This Edward Barton was the progenitor of the family that forms the subject of this article" I have always just gone back to Rufus as the R.I. head of that family. I have all of Clara Barton's ancestors in Oxford, MA which goes back to Edward, Matthew, Samuel. Her father was Capt Stephen Barton 1774 - 1862 , his father was "Dr. Stephen, then to Edmund and into Samuel. I will quote you what this booklet says , written by Rev. William E. (Rev). The suirname of Barton first appears in New England records among the early Puritan settlers at Salem, Edward Barton is the first-mentioned of the name. It is possible butr not probable that he was related to Roger Barton, (New York) and to Rufus Barton who settled in Rhode Island about the same time. In the seventeenth century there were several famialies of Bartons in the American Colonies but it is doubtful if all the early Bartons in America were related., Salem was the home of two Barton families, possibly not closely related but probably descended from the same English family the Bartons of Lancashire. Dear listers, I'm trying to get started...I purchased the Barton Book and have the family history from Robert Wain (the book has Wayne, but that is an error) Barton (11 April 1893-27 Feb 1976) who married Ozella Pearl Hinds, 1914, in Coleman, County, Texas. Early in my research (while I still had very little clue) I was told that there were a lot of Bartons in the Posey Co., IN area. At the time that information was of very little use to me because I had not been able to move beyond my first Barton -- Florence -- who married Boyd Wells. She lived in Missouri and he in Arkansas but I found that their towns were close to the borders of their states. I did know (from census) that she was born in MO but her parents were born in Indiana. Florence and Boyd married in Ripley Co., MO (1897) and were living in Clay Co., AR in 1900. Eventually, I connected with a lady named Kim who told me that Florence's parents were Job Downey BARTON and Sarah (or Mary?) Elizabeth HANCOCK (who we believe went by Elizabeth). I have also gotten more census information on this family from other people and I have been able to construct some siblings. Now there is information from Kim that Job's parents were William B. (Bradford) BARTON and Nancy Green-Duckworth. (She was the widow of a Mr. Duckworth.) Of course I would like to find information on these family groups but I would also like to know if anyone knows anything about the Bartons from Posey Co., IN. Any general information is very welcome. Sincere thanks, Sarah Kleimeyer dkleimeyer@email.msn.com Side note: I believe Florence and her sisters were called by their middle names too (like their mother?). On the early census, the girls were listed with the first name middle initial. Sister Harriet A. was later called Azilee, sister Elizabeth was Mary Elizabeth. There is another sister (Evelyn) but she was not born when the earlier census that gave me the sibling names was taken. (Their brothers were: John B., Arthur, Otis, and Charles W.)
Can ANYONE HELP ME with these BARTON's - I would appreciate all help!! If any of you would check your BARTON books or census records or whatever you have I would appreciate it. It appears that my ISAIAH as well as his sibs were orphaned and nobody has ever known much about my BARTONs probably for that reason. Isaac - married Margaret CREED abt.1831-1832. I do not know where or when he was born. Margaret was from S.C. I have been told that he was from Lexington County,S.C. I have found an Isaac Barton listed there in the 1840 census along with quite a few other BARTONs. I have also learned that there were alot of BARTONs living in the old Orangeburgh,S.C. area and that Lexington County was formed from that area. There are BARTONs found in the 1790 census of that county, there is also a John CREED family found there. Isaac's children are listed in the 1850 Thomas County,Ga. census although he is listed as Isaiah which is either a mistake or it is another name for him. Here it says he is from N.C. Margaret's age must be inaccurate. This is how they are listed: Isaiah 45 N.C. Margaret 55 Cassandra 17 Josiah 16 farmer Joseph 14 John 12 Uriah 11 Elizabeth 9 Isaiah 4 Ga. Robert 4/12 (I suppose this means 4 months old) The 1860 Colquitt County,Ga. listing for Darlin Creed (Margaret Creed Barton's brother) shows his wife and children listed as well as three of Isaac and Margaret's children. The ages do not exactly add up and in 1850 the last child is listed as Robert who may be 4 months old and in the census 10 years later this child is 9 years old which would fit but he is now called Thomas, which is not an uncommon name in this family so it quite possibly is his name also. This is how the 1860 census list these Barton children: Elizabeth 16 S.C. Isaiah 13 Ga. Thomas 9 Ga. I do not know why these Barton children are living with the CREED family. I suspect that sometime between the 1850 and 1860 census Margaret passed away and possibly it was too difficult for Isaac to raise their three youngest children. By 1860 the other children would be adults. I have learned from these census that Isaac moved his family from S.C. to Ga.between 1844 and 1847 based on the children's places of birth. Isaiah - (MY LINE) Born abt. 1846-1847 d. 3/17/1916. He is buried at Bridge Creek Cemetery in Colquitt County,Ga. He has a Southern Cross on his grave that was placed there by the U.D.C. to honor him for his service in the Civil War. He had married Harriet Emaline KELLEY who was b. 1845 in Bay,ThomasCounty, Ga. Isaiah and Harriett's Children- Johnny (JH) b.9/30/1873-d.11/27/1960 Margaret b. abt.1873 James Thomas b.6/7/1876-d.3/21/1956 Johnny - married Pennine (Ninie) Holland in 1899. The story of their marriage was documented in The Moultrie (Colquitt County,Ga.) Observer's Centennial Edition. It was reported in that article that Johnny had walked 8 miles into Moultrie to get his marriage license. As Colquitt celebrated it's centennial they were 83 yrs old and said to be among the oldest living couples who were both from Colquitt County,Georgia although at that time they had moved into Thomas County in Chastain,Ga. Moultrie was the 1st town Johnny had ever visited and they raised 7 children of their own plus they adopted 1 child there. James Thomas - married Martha Jane Harvey. They are both buried at Oakgrove Cemetery in Moultrie,Ga. James and Martha's Children - Shelby Isaiah - 6/18/1916 - 11/19/1984 Cora Mae
