    1. [BARTON-L] James Barton of Newton MA 1600's
    2. Paul Barton
    3. According to the Town of Newton, MA Vital Records, James Barton died 22 September 1729 at age 86. His wife Margaret died 21 September 1731 age 87. This would put James birth about 1633. Does anyone have any info on this family? Does anyone have access to the Middlesex County Probate or deeds indexes to see if there might be other records? Paul Barton

    1. Re: [BARTON-L] My Barton line (from Rufus down)
    2. I have always know her as Margaret Stafford. I believe there was a document at the time of Rufus murder, stating that his wife, Margaret Stafford was to inherit with land to go to son Benjamin at her death. I believe that my aunt Ruth Barton had documented that. She used to pour through the old records at Warwick City Hall. I believe those documents have now are not allowed to be touched, but I think were transferred to microfilm a few years ago. Also one of the early books disappeared for a while, but I think was found. I also did get to look at that first record book way back in the 1950's. Went with Aunt and she introduced me to it. I have that Margaret Stafford married Rufus in England, she being from Salisbury England. I believe that info to be correct. I also believe that there were four brothers that came to America together. Landing at New Amsterdam (NY) One stayed there, Rufus went directly to settlement of Roger Williams at Providence RI, and one to Mass. I can't remember what the family lore on the fourth. Also we have never found ANY documentation of the parentage of those brothers. I have seen some lists on the internet listing Edward, and another listing Samuel. I think both are not correct. Someday with all the ancient files becoming accessable via microfilm etc. we may find the link. At the present, I will discard the idea of Margaret Hunniwell/Honeywell. It is possible that Edward married such a Margaret, and had a Rufus, but the RI Rufus was here in or before 1642. His son Benjamin was born in Warwick in 1645, and married Susannah Gorton, dau. of Samuel & Elizabeth Gorton. This Benjamin had quite a parcel of children. I have 5 listed on my computer, but I believe there were more. I saw Arnold's History of South County families(not positive of the whole name of book) In it all the children of the first three or four generations are listed. Not sure if that book is still able to be seen. I did some poor xerox copies over 25 years ago, and the book was in poor shape then. Also those old copies have faded a good bit. I have buried them someplace to keep them away from light, but not sure where they are just now. "Out of sight, out of mind". Please copy me if anyone can document the brothers, or a parent. Rufus' parents were not mentioned in the original Warwick records. Hope I have helped someone have a brainsstorm. Oh, I was always told that we were English. Didn't know about the Scottish or Welch. That's interesting. Today I met an Adelaide Barton (maiden name) who is decended from Issac Barton, whom she says came from Killcomonbegg, Ireland circa 1714. That's a new one on me. I did not know our heritage might have Irish. Not necessarily good or bad. Just interesting. We are what we are. Gives it a new twist. Well, enough I think, Can't remember any more at the moment. Got to look for those Xerox copies. The extra siblings may shed some light. Keep in touch Dorothy. That John must be there, The earliest John on my list was b. 1744, m. Mercy Card. I know you know about that one. I don't recall any John Jr.'s ....As Ever, Betsey

    3. Hi Dorothy, Thanks for the offer. Just so you know, I only collect FGS' on my immediate line basically. In other words, for my ancestor William Barton, I have a FGS on him, and one with each of his sons/daughters as head of family. Then I continue only his son Robert's from there (ie. his son Robert's children, etc). This way I keep from tying up my database with to many unrelated lines. I actually prefer the excitement of discovering lines on my own and in trying to generate discussion in the group, which is why I sent the second post (and will be sending more today on discoveries I found yesterday), but would greatly appreciate the information you have if you would like to share. My mailing address is: Christi Calvert Brogan 11444 Vance Jackson #6D San Antonio, TX 78230 Thanks again! 3. Hello cousins, Rosemary posted this site and place a letter written by Alvin Barton on it. What a wonderful treat of information to find. It was at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/6804/rosemary.html I have read and reread the letter and have placed it in my notes for my family with her permission and passed it along to fellow cousins of my family. Thanks again Rosemary. What I would like to discuss is this part of the letter: "Grandfather's grandfather or great grandfather emigrated from Wales. There were four brothers of them; one settled in New York, one in Rhode Island, one in Mass. and the fourth went back. They were shipwrecked coming over. I sprang from the Mass. Bartons. I know nothing of these ancient Bartons except one was Penuel Barton. My great grandfather's name was Joshua Barton." Now he spoke of there being four brothers. If you went as far as his Grandfather's G-Grandfather that would get you to Matthew born in ME, son of Edward who came from England. This story of 4 brothers may have been passed down from the previous generations. Penuel was about 15 years younger (born in 1712) than his G-Grandfather Joshua, born in 1697. I have only found this next article thus far before the hand written letter of Alvin Barton surfaced: "The surname of Barton first appears in New England records among the early Puritan settlers at Salem, in what is now Essex County, Mass., and Edward Barton is the first-mentioned of the name. It is possible, but not probable that he was related to Roger Barton, who settled in New Netherland (New York), and to Rufus Barton, who settled in Rhode Island about the same time. In the seventeenth century there were several families of Bartons in the American Colonies, but it is doubtful if all the early Bartons in America were related, or all the earlier Bartons in England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales." from The New England Historical & Genealogical Register Vol. 84 Issue 4 October 1930, pg 401 Fredrick A. Virkus What are your thoughts to this and has anyone found any other pieces that might connect these Barton families together? 1. Re: [BARTON-L] Alvin Barton letter & early Barton connections
    2. Hi! I never got to read the letter you are speaking of but I have noticed that there is a big discrepency in the earliest Bartons of New England. All the records that I have state that Rufus Barton was born in England in 1606. I thought he came in through Portsmouth RI. However, new evidence states that he may have emigrated with his father Edward, possibly 2 brothers, Thomas and Roger and started in New York. The problem that I have found is that for about 4 generations of my family there was a Rufus, Benjamin, Edward and Thomas in almost every family and therefore it is difficult to keep them straight. The other problem is that some of the dates assigned to these individuals could make them a father, brother, cousin or son. My biggest problem is that all the info is in New England and I live in a small town in Ca where the closest LDS center or geneology library are 40miles away. Please let me know if you come up with anything concrete. Thanks, L Barton

    1. Re: [BARTON-L] Gorton/Barton line updated
    2. Hi! I noticed that you followed the Greene family line a little in your info. Thought you might enjoy this info on my Barton line. My family comes from Richard Barton (son of Benjamin son of Andrew). Mary Barton ( daughter of Benjamin) married Jabez Greene and became the g-grandmother of Gen Nathaniel Greene of Rev War fame. Nathaniels g-granddaughter Louisa Baily married Henry O Barton of the same direct line. This is only a fyi but it is kind of interesting. If you would like I have the full info and will share. Best always L Barton
