I've never seen proof of the above and certainly would not rely on someone's web page as gospel truth. Further, Elisha was not a sister to any of the above. He was a male! My own line is through another Elisha Barton, son of Roger Barton (d. 1688 Westchester, NY). -- -=CHESKA=- E-mail address: cheska@ix.netcom.com Web site: <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/6630/> Proud Sponsor: BADGLEY, CLAYTON, COOPER, & MILLS email lists RootsWeb: Dedicated to Keeping Access to Online Genealogy Free http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html
Dear Cheska: You said "My own line is through another Elisha Barton, son of Roger Barton (d. 1688 Westchester, NY)." I am very interested in more information on this line. I have a gggg-grandmother Mary BARTON b abt 1740 prob Westchester Co. who married abt 1757 James SIRRINE b abt 1735 prob in Dutchess Co... Mary (who married 2nd an Isaac Stagg abt 1783/84 and possibly had a 3rd husband) died abt 1829-1832 in Somerstown, Westchester Co. Mary's son, James 'Canopus' SIRRINE stated in his pension papers that after he was injured in the Revolutionary War 'he made his way up the Hudson River to SingSing to stay with Elisha BARTON, his mother's brother.' He remained there until the end of the war.
Hi Arlene, I was reading the Barton e-mail and saw your message to Lea. Rufus Barton was the son of Edward and Mary. He had six brothers ; Enoch, Joseph, Noah, Thomas, Marmaduke and Roger, and one sister; Elisha. All were born in England. You can find more information from Abigail Cole's research listings at < www.gendex.com/users/royc/barton/D0001/G0000018.html#15 > Rufus' decendants include my wifes ggrandmother Lucy Barton. Marmaduke's decendants include Clarisa Harlow Barton (Clara ), who started the Red Cross. Hope this helps. Regards, Ed & Ruth Smith -----Original Message----- From: V. Sorry but no I dont. My Bartons never left New England. My father was the first. All my research has been centered in RI, MA, and VT. Keep looking, it took me 2 1/2 years to find one of my Barton ancestors in VT and I knew where he was born, died and buried. Best of luck. Lea Barton

Best always Lea I've always thought that the three Barton brothers story (Rufus, Roger and another) was unproven legend. Adoph Voge refers to it as such in his paper "Roger Barton and his kinsmen". He in effect says that old family legends assert that the three came from Lancastershire England - perhaps by way of the West Indies but admits that there was no proof (at least at the time his papers were presented - in the 1930's). Both Roger and Rufus were in New Amsterdam (New York) by 1660 or so. However, I've heard of no proof that they were brothers. Does anyone have definitive proof of this? Douglas Losty

Rufus is the brother of Rojer. There is some evidence that there may have been a Thomas or Edward. As to the children of Benjamin, there is a Benjamin in almost every generation of Bartons for the first 5 gen. The children of the Benjamin mentioned in my Haile Barton posting are as follows: Benjamin Barton----Mary Haile Phebe 1728 Benjamin 1732/33 Nathan 1735 Amos 1737 Anne twins?? Richard 1738/39 (my ancestor) Mary 1740 Rebecca 1743 Haile 1744 Benjamin-----Lydia Brown David 1746 William 1748 (General-- Revolutionary War) Anne 1749 Susan 1751 Seth 1754 I have listings for some of the other families so let me know if you can use them.
