    1. [BARTON-L] Civil War Ancestor photo cite
    2. This was on my Adkins-L e-mail this morning. I checked it out and there are 16 Barton names on the list that they have pictures of. L. Smith ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This site was created by the U.S. Army Military History Institute and it is a searchable database of their Special Collections. Using this database you can see if a photograph exists of your Civil War ancestor. There were two records for Melton. Just enter the surname you're searching and the results page will give any photos of any soldier with that surname, along with (if known) his regiment. Next, you can send an e-mail with the photo ID's that you're interested in. The Army will then send you (for free) a photocopy of the picture, along with instructions on ordering a duplicate photo. An 8x10 photo costs $10.00. No more then ten photos will be produced for any one customer per year. http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi/PhotoDB.html

    2. Teresa Barton
    3. While we are talking about Indiana Barton's ... ;-) Has anyone run across a Dock Marshall Barton (1844-1839)? His census records state that he was born in Indiana but I have no idea where. I know one of his sons was born in Madison County, Indiana. He later moved to Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana where he his buried. His children were: Walter, Wilbur, Oran, Herbert, Della, Ethel Blanche, and Dorothy. He married Emmaline B Christopher(1860-1944) abt 1879. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it! Thanks! Also, I live in Terre Haute. If there is anything I can do for anyone, just let me know! :-) Teresa Barton

    2. Jan Hart
    3. Hello list Does anyone have any info on a Hugh Barton (Irish born but gained US citizenship) in Larimer County CO? He married Emma Gibson (her 2nd marriage) 14 Jun 1883. I have newspaper cuttings about a Miss Alice Barton "daughter of Hugh Barton the wool grower", - but can find no trace of her - it's possible she was born in Ireland. Any help would be appreciated - thanks! Jan Hart http://www.janhart.net

    1. [BARTON-L] GenConnect Down
    2. Christi Brogan
    3. Just an FYI to all who may be trying to use the GenConnect boards today. This message was received concerning them: The server that houses GenConnect will be down today (Tuesday, Oct 26, 1999) until about 9 pm PST (midnight east coast). It's being moved to a new location. Once it's back up, it may have a new DNS, so if it appears to still be down for you, please allow some time for the DNS to filter its way through the 'Net. If you or your visitors have trouble bringing GenConnect up after tonight, try the following (these are all DNS-caching related): Dump your browser's cache. Empty your 'history' folder. Shut down your browser and restart it. If that still doesn't work, try rebooting your computer. Some browsers cache DNS's. Best of luck, The GenConnect Team After tonight, if you have problems, please let me know and I'll see what we can do. Still working on the new webpages, so be prepared! :) Christi Calvert Brogan Proud Rootsweb Donor Visit our list pages at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cbrogan Visit our personal homepage at http://users.idworld.net/brogan

    3. You have your hands full but you offered to help with other lines of Bartons. Mine seems to be Roger's line (brother of your Rufus). Roger, Thomas (of VA), Elisha and Daniel of PA. I desperately want to know for sure that Elisha is Daniel's father and that Daniel is the father of my Thomas. Daniel's will (1808 lists Thomas and Samuel Barton to have all his "chattels and goods". I'd appreciate anything you can tell me. Thanks. 1. Re: [BARTON-L] Roll Call.

    3. On Mon, 18 Oct 1999 23:05:46 EDT, Betsey Barton Perra, BBPERRA@aol.com wrote: >These are the RI Bartons as I know them. Betsey, After I finally decoded the text, I have a question about 8ii Rufus Barton below: Children of RUFUS BARTON and SARAH ROBINSON are: 8. i. ROWLAND4 BARTON, b. April 7, 1709, WARWICK, RI; d. September 25, 1769, WARWICK, RI. ii. RUFUS BARTON, m. PRUDENCE COLE. iii. SARAH BARTON. iv. MARGARET BARTON. v. WILLIAM BARTON. Quite a few documents show the marriage of Prudence Cole to Rufus Barton. However, they show his birth as 20 August 1749 in Warwick. This would make him a little too old to be the brother of Rowland4 who was born in 1709. This would have also been in the 45th year of the marriage of Rufus Barton and Sarah Robinson. My wife descends from Rufus Barton and Prudence Cole. I have not yet confirmed this Rufus' parents. Please take a look at some of the notes I have for him: ========================== Rufus Barton's Parents============================= I am not sure who are the parents of our Rufus Barton. However, because this Rufus Barton named one of his daughters Lillis Turner Barton, I am assuming his parents are Samuel Barton and Lillis Turner. >From the fact that Warren was once part of Swansea, Massachusetts, I found something in the Vital Records of Swansea, Massachusetts to 1850 that might be a lead to Rufus Barton's ancestry. Book B: Marriages 1705 - 1775 indicates that Samuel Barton and Lillis Turner were married March ye 23: 1737/8 by Samuel Maxwell minister. Since our Rufus named one of his daughters Lillis Turner Barton, based on time and place, I would suspect that Samuel and Lillis Barton may be his parents. Book B: Births 1705 - 1775 indicates Lillis the Daughter of William Turner and of Patience his wife was Born February the 26: 1714/5. The source of this Rufus Barton's birth date, birth location, marriage date, and marriage location is the 1994 RI IGI. Page 22 of the Barton Family manuscript in the Rhode Island Genealogical Society in Providence lists Rufus and Prudence (Cole) Barton, Mar. Apr 7, 1771, and their eleven children. However, there is neither a link to this Rufus nor reference to his parents in the manuscript. (Nearly every other entry in the manuscript has both a to and from reference for every family head.) It does list the eleventh child, Ebenezer Cole Barton b. Aug 14, 1799 Cambridge, N. Y. As stated above, it appears Samuel and Lillis Turner Barton may be the parents of this Rufus. In July 1997 I ran across an Internet web page sponsored by David Cole. In it, there is circumstantial evidence that Rufus's parents are David and Susanna Barton, married about 1735, or Samuel and Lillis Turner Barton, married in 1737. While at the NEHGS in 1997 I had a personal tutorial with Gary Boyd Roberts and he confirmed that there was certainly circumstantial evidence to support this assumption. At least, there must be a close relationship if Lillis Turner is not Rufus's mother. ============================================================ I would appreciate help from anyone who can shed some light on this Rufus' real parents. By the way, I have all of my wife's Barton ancestry online linked to my web page at http://angelfire.com/tx/royc/. It includes quite a few of the early generations of descendants of the immigrant Rufus Barton (1606-1648) along with a lot of relative documentation and references. My wife's great grandmother was Emily Barton (1848-1934.) The online database contains many of her collateral lines including Gorton, Low, Rhodes, Turner, Hale, Bullock, Cole, Luther, Abell, Millard, and Arnold. Take a look. These are the RI Bartons as I know them. Most of it is documented in Town Records, RI Vital Stats, and Dar membership. Some of my info has been shared by some of you. I know it is not complete, and will be pleased to have any corrections or additions. No one on the list is still living I do not believe. 3. Hello all. I keep watching for Bartons from England and no luck so far. Most of the Bartons in the U.S and Canada had ancestors from England so if any of you have come up with information regarding Stephen Barton who married jane Wood Formage in 1841 in Cheriton (Kent) England, would you please contact me. My father, John William Barton came to Canada in aprox. 1912, with his parents and sister. They settled in the Ottawa, Ontario area. A Barton family reunion is held each year in central Florida. Maurice attended occasionally. I would like to find the name of William and Gertie's parents. The SSI lists my grandmothers name as Gertie but, she always used Novella and her friends called her Belle. A picture of them is on my home page at http://hometown.aol.com/spiritseye/Somewhere.htm. Thanks for your help. Jenny Barton Lane

    3. Sarah, Three really good sources are Emily Moore - EAllynM@aol.com and Linda Young - lindagen@evansville.net and Claudia Cox claudiac@ptd.net Most of my data back to Rachael is from family and census data. Some data from Posey County. From Rachael back is mostly from the three listed above. Much of that came from the Ancestral File Alexander's wife, Lowell or Sowell, has been a problem for years and I have never been able to resolve it. Most of my references list both names. There is also a book entitled "The Lost Heritage" by Walter Barton with some info. Emily Moore says that book contains a section with the following - Samuel Barton traveled from Cynthiana, KY (currently Harrison Co) to Indiana in 1815, and had a son named William Bradford Barton (b. abt 1808, d. 1892). Samuel died before 1859. William Bradford Barton was the father of Tom Barton and Anson Barton (b. 1861). Emily suggests that VA and PA may have been the home of our Bartons before NC as the 1790 census lists four Bartons in VA and 18 in PA. Keep in touch, cousin! 3. Jim, I saw your message concerning Harrisonville, MO library, and your interest in updating files. Are you related to Willis Barton SC AL? Debbie Black has a nice web page about this Barton family. Willis is my ancestor as well. I live near Harrisonville, Mo. Is there any research about the Bartons in this library? 1. [BARTON-L] Rev. Isaac Barton/Murphy - Rev. William Murphy/Barton
    2. The families of the Rev. Isaac Barton and the Rev. William Murphy are interwoven. Rev. Isaac Barton married Keziah Murphy, daughter of Rev. William Murphy and Martha Hodge(s) Murphy. After the death of Martha Hodge(s) Murphy, Rev. William Murphy married Sarah Barton, sister of the Rev. Isaac Barton (both children of Joshua Barton and Jane Dubart Barton). As a Barton/Murphy descendant, I am interested in making contact with other Barton and Murphy descendants for the purpose of updating the family records of our common families. As a member (and current President) of the Barton Family Association ("BFA"), I have as a resource the 2-volume family history privately printed in 1988 by the BFA entitled "The Descendants of Isaac Barton of Killaloe, County Clare, Ireland". A copy of the "History of Rev. William Murphy and His Descendants 1798-1819", written by Alice Murphy Sturgess, is in our local library (Harrisonville, MO), as is some research done by a local community member (now deceased). I am hopeful that we can combine efforts to share information about our common families. Please feel free to contact me at JReyno6299@aol.com. Jim Reynolds
