    1. Re: [BARTON-L] Harrison/Gilmer/Lewis County Barton's of WVA
    2. I don't think we're related, but I certainly enjoyed reading your letter... (I'm from Jane Barton/Alexander Causey in Posey County, Ind...) A hearty welcome to you; hope you continue to contribute; love your humor. Mary Causey Yamada In a message dated 11/21/1999 12:00:02 AM Pacific Standard Time, magister@myfamily.org writes: << Subj: [BARTON-L] Harrison/Gilmer/Lewis County Barton's of WVA Date: 11/21/1999 12:00:02 AM Pacific Standard Time From: magister@myfamily.org Reply-to: BARTON-L@rootsweb.com To: BARTON-L@rootsweb.com Thanks for the info and any further discussion about the lineages and ancestry of the Barton's which you've described as having settled in Harrison/Lewis County WVA would be greatly appreciated. I just subscribed to this list, as I have only started seriously trying to trace my tree a few weeks ago. It's for this reason that I can't provide the specific dates for Lloyd Lee Barton; I haven't visited his grave in more than twenty years; Though, I will be at his graveside in Gilmer County on the 29th to glean the appropriate dates from his marker. What I have is as follows; Lloyd Lee would most likely show up on an 1850 census because one of his sons, my great-grandfather was at about 20 years older than my great-grandmother and I have her documented as being born in 1897. My great-grandfather, Berlie Lee Barton is buried in Weston (Lewis Co) and his children started spurting forth in 1920. Berlie Lee, son of Lloyd Lee was according to legend, a circuit-riding preacher for the United Brethren Church and after he married my great-grandmother from Gilmer County, they moved to North View in Harrison County, where he died and she lived for another forty-odd years. Lloyd Lee had one son who died as an infant (Thomas), Robert and Herbert, plus the aforementioned Berlie and a daughter Hope, who married a Talbott. And finally, Lloyd Lee is buried alongside his second wife (Snow) in the Linn Cemetary at Troy. His place of burial and the recollections of my great-uncle Berlie Lee Jr. is what I've used to try and connect him to Gilmer County, even though my memory places Berlie Sr. starting life as a circuit-riding preacher working out of Weston (Lewis Co). But, great-uncle Berlie was wrong about where his mother and her father was born, so I'm just as inclined to accept Harrison/Lewis as I am to accept what he has told me in our two interviews. As I mentioned before, I'm going to be in Gilmer/Lewis/Harrison Counties during the week starting the 29th and I'll not only record all of the gravesites that I have already identified, but I'm going to try and memorize/copy all of the pertinent records, before my wife gets tired of staying with my Aunt Carolyn. But before and after my trip, I'd like to gather as much information from this glorious internet in order to at least have a better idea where to look; Never mind that I've already got three sets of grandparents back to the 1820's without leaving my study, though I'm sure my bill for phone interviews is going to be outrageous. If anyone else is tracing Lloyd Lee Barton and/or the Barton's of NorthCentral WVA, I'd love to hear from you and if anybody else has any tidbits about the Harrison/Lewis County or perhaps the tree that branches to or from Bucks County Pa; Please give me a shout, either through this list or via private email. 1. [BARTON-L] Re: Barton's of West Virginia?
    2. Beginning in early 1800s, two unrelated groups of Barton families are located in the area that became northern WV. Along the Ohio River was a group descended or believed to be descended from the Barton families of Rhode Island. This group has been discussed frequently on this list. Inland was a group that might have come overland from the eastern region of Pennsylvania. In Harrison Co. VA Deed Records 1785 - 1910 compiled by John David Dolls, 1993: pg 33 a William Barton using attny John Young in Phila sells 1000 acres on right hand fork of Freeman's Creek to Christian Wireman on Bucks Co. Pa. on 31 July 1793. Same page, William gives power of attn. to Young for 3 1000 acre parcels also in July 1793. Pg 34 (probably) lists the sale of these parcels. This land was west of what is now Jackson Mill, Lewis County (in what was then Harrison County). Also in "VA / WV Husbands & Wives" by Patrick Wardell (pub 1994), a Thomas Barton married a Sally Drummond on 28 Feb 1808 in Harrison Co. (West) Virginia. There are also records in Monongalia County concerning early Bartons in the northern part of the state. Hope that this helps, Mark Moeser MMoeser237@aol.com

    1. [BARTON-L] Barton's of West Virginia?
    2. According to legend, my great-great-grandfather came from Gilmer County WV and I know he's buried there. But unfortunately, I haven't been able to find hide nor hair of him, except for his grave. Does anyone know from where, Lloyd Lee Barton who was married to both Eliza Ann Taylor and then Snow Lange (widow, not her maiden name) came? Any help on him in particular, or the origin of the Barton's of West Virginia would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance; R - ---------------------------------------------------- Get the Latest News at CNN Interactive: http://CNN.com

    3. I found a Enoch & Gilbert both born to Elishga & Jemina Van Kirk Barton this is NJ I found a Morris bofn to Thomas & Mary Barton 1867 in Crawford Ohio I went thru all of the Ohio list but did not find children for Gilbert and La Fever. Sorry, I did not run your letter down long enough, you already had that info Its funny the names submitted to IGI are either not there or an error. Why would the marriage be recorded but none of the children in Ohio.,There are 4 times marriages recorded over births. Wonder how come. 2. Gilbert Barton was born in Pennsylvania 13 Sept. 1801 to Enoch Barton and Margaret Tower Barton. I'm guessing it was somewhere around Brush Creek Township. Enoch was born in NJ 1744 and died in Ohio 1833. Margaret was born in Scotland and died in Pennsylvania 1826. It's Maurice (Gilbert Morris) that I can find no information on other than the census report where it states he was born in Ohio and a page in a book "100 Years For The "Greatest Little Town" In The USA" where he married Olive Ann Beede (which some say it should be Votaw instead of Beede but the Bible has her Listed as Beede) and they had Walter Hogan Barton (born in IL.. No mention of any other children. I've been searching for information on Maurice for a year now so it's still a young search!

Lived in Montgomoery Co. MO and Shannon Co. MO. Died in Texas Co. MO. We believe his father's name was Joseph William Barton, who was married to Adeline Rife who spoke no english, just german. It's been said our Barton's real surname was Baron or Barron, and that they raised horses and/or mules and may have been from OH or PA., and were "Pennsylvania Dutch". Any info would is appreciated.
