I visited the cemetery in Gorman, TX this last weekend. I found the following Bartons: EDWARD THIRD SON OF GEORGE AND GERTRUDE BARTON BORN AUG. 13, 1868 DIED MAY 8, 1906 Blessed are the pure in heart Fort they shall see God. OPAL BARTON MAR 5, 1908 MAY 15, 1910 Our darling has gone before. Sleep on in thy beauty thou sweet angel child These are word for word and line for line. Edward's stone was a tall column type stone, about 8 ft. tall. Opal's was more standard in style and size. There may have been other Bartons, these were the two I saw and they were not together.
There IS an index for both Vol. 106 and 107 of McCracken's material. I have it. Hello Arlene and Doug, Thanks for the quick reply. While I would like to think that these two names, George and William, were the ones I'm searching for, I don't believe they are. My George was reportedly born in N.S. in 1827 and was at home with the family on the 1850 Beaver Co., Pa census. His father was William, but I have Wm's last will and it is dated 1872 rather than 1878. There is no indication that they were ever in NY, however I don't know how they reached Beaver Co from N.S. I've found that the Bartons in my line have a penchant for using the names William, George and Richard, thus creating quite a maze to wade through. Thank you again for the info and for trying. Hope the info helps Doug. Hello Doug and Clark, The Bartons that lived in Pennsylvania that I know about are my gr. grandfathers brother GEORGE W. BARTON b. 1834, New York County. George W. grew up in Liberty, Sullivan County, NY and m. Esther Banker of Susquahanna, PA. They lived in Susquahanna in 1878 at the time of the will of Georges father WILLIAM BARTON. More on Susquahanna and George and Esther was found by one of our little band of New York Barton researchers, Joyce. Check out "The History of Susquahanna 1887" for more information on that area. Article on page 520 titled "Centennial of Susquahanna" by Stocker. At one point HENRY BARTON and his wife SALLY left Sullivan County and went to PA for, it appears, the rest of their lives. This is Georgia's ancestor and I will ask her to fill in the details here. Georgia gets the BARTON -L. list also and will no doubt read this too. OK Georgia? From a list of death notices: . Barton, James d. Milford, Pa. 14 Jan 90 y. (28 Jan 1852) It was from the Whig Press Death Notices 1852. I hope there is something here that will help someone. Lewis Deuel's 15 children were: William, Linette, Osborne, Major, Asa, Eliza, Edmond (Edmund?), Pumina, Alonzo, Jonathan, Lewis, Clement, Mary Ann, and Sally.--not in that order. I do not know if 2 or 3 were by the first wife--at least two were. FYI - I finally got a copy of American Heritage magazine (hardbound), Vol XI, No. 5, Aug 1960. It has an article (7 1/2 pages) about General William Barton the "Captor of the Barefoot General". About William capturing General Prescott in 1777. There is a full page color picture of William Barton, b. abt 1748. Larry
Arlene and others, For those who cannot wait until they get their complete copy of Roger Barton of Westchester County, NY, they can read the opening several pages at http://www.rootsweb.com/~genepool/bartrog.htm#FAMILY Jim Arlene Frodey wrote: > Hello Cheryl, > > There is a small group of us who are researching our ancestors in New > York. Thank you all, Can't believe all the information you sent. From a census in Brighton (Livingston Co.) Michigan, I have that she was born 1841 in New York. Married a Peter Abrams in Ulster, New York Please let me know if anyone is from this family. Thank you again for all your kindness, Cheryl
Hello Arlene and others, Any person or group researching Barton from Westchester County, NY, for family members in the time frame of your message should have a copy of "Roger Barton of Westchester County, N.Y., and Some of His Earlier Descendants," by George E. McCracken, published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register in 1952 and 1953. The series begins on page 168 of Volume 106, the January 1952 issue, and ends on page 303 of Volume 107, the October 1953 issue. In all, the series totals 74 printed pages. Unfortunately, it has no index, thus lookups are time-consuming. Without an index, it is difficult to estimate how many Bartons are in the article, but I would say about 1,500. The most recent persons included are those born in the general time frame of 1850. Fortunately, the USA census provides rather complete family information starting in 1850, thus it is generally not difficult to link living individuals to this article (or to Solomon Barton as will be discussed later in this message). The author, George E. McCracken, is a descendant of Roger Barton (as am I). He was Professor of Classical Studies at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, when he did the research and authored the series. Later he was the Publisher and Editor of American Genealogist magazine, one of the most respected publications in the field. As one would expect almost 50 years later with much more information easily available and studying only one part of the family, I have found incorrect data here and there. That does not detract one bit from the value of the article in providing guidance for Barton family researchers. Each person can update his or her branch or twig. The New England Historical and Genealogical Register was first published in 1847 and is, I believe, the oldest continuously published journal of its kind in the USA. The entire set of 153 volumes is available in many public libraries and genealogical and historical society libraries. If your public library does not have the set, they can probably use the interlibrary system to borrow the issues or volumes of interest for you from another library. Also, you can buy the individual back issues of interest for a nominal cost (about $3 each as I recall) or you can buy the two annual bound volumes which include the series for perhaps $50 each in library quality hard cover. These can be purchased from the society itself at http://www.nehgs.org/ You can buy by mail or phone. The prices I mentioned here are only top of the head recollections so you will have a ballpark idea of what is possible. Also, if one wants to go for broke, one can buy a CD-ROM version of the entire New England Historical and Genealogical Register for the years 1847 through 1994 (Volumes 1 through 148) for $295 (non-members) or $265.50 (members). The CD-ROM version consists of scanned images of the publication, thus is not something one can readily search or edit, but one can print the pages. I hope I'm not violating any rules here. I'm trying to be helpful. I'm not trying to sell anything. The individual issues of interest are July, 1952; October, 1952; January, 1953; April, 1953; July, 1953; and October, 1953. The journal is a quarterly publication, thus these are six of the eight issues for 1952 and 1953 (Volumes 106 and 107). In addition to the articles mentioned above, you also should obtain a copy of "The Descendants of Solomon Barton of Dutchess County, New York, and Monkton, Vermont," by Dr. Joshua Lindley Barton, published in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record in a series of articles beginning on page 239 of the July, 1928, issue. That is Volume LIX of that journal. The article is continued in later issues of the journal, but I have not collected all of the articles and don't know how many there are. Solomon Barton is a descendant of Roger Barton of Westchester County, N.Y., and this article is mentioned on page 58 of the January, 1953, issue of The New England Historical and Genealogical Register. It is mentioned in the Roger Barton article where one makes the transition from Caleb Barton to one of his sons, Solomon Barton. Caleb's wife was a Quaker, and Caleb became one. The first few generations of their descendants were Quakers. This article includes the authority for many of the family groups, and there is an index of names for each volume (one year set of quarterly issues) in total. Thus, it provides lots of things to do for the next several rainy days. Without embarking on a new project (thank you but my plate is full right now), I cannot easily determine whether names mentioned in the Roger Barton series are for sure those in Arlene's message below, but Jeremiah5 Barton (Isaac4, Roger3, Roger2, Roger1) born in 1765, died in Yorktown, NY, Jan 10, 1815, married to Elizabeth, perhaps Lounsberry, who died Apr 15, 1844, had, among others, the following children: Jesse, b. Apr 14, 1791. Joshua, b. in Westchester County in December 1792. William (twin of Susan), b. July 8, 1799. Henry, b. in 1810. Five other children born from about 1789 to 1812. As for myself, I am a descendant of Alonzo6 Barton (Joseph5, Joseph4, Roger3, Joseph2, Roger1) who is on the last line of the last page of the Roger Barton article. Whew, just made it.
