My gg grandmother was Mary Jane Bartlett, born in central Vermont (probably Plainfield or Cabot) in 1836. She married D. Marshall Perkins. Her father was Levi Bartlett, who, according to the LDS FHC database, was born in Hanover, NH, on November 5, 1800, and died in Plainfield, VT in 1881. Her mother was Nancy Batchelder, and they were married in 1831. Their household is listed in Plainfield, VT on the 1850 census, naming Mary Jane and three brothers, Solomon, Joseph & Edward, as well as two more adult women. Family legend says we are descended from the same family (Stephen & Hannah Webster Bartlett, Married in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts on 18 December, 1712) as Josiah Bartlett, signer of the Declaration of Independence. I guess a lot of family legends say that!!! I have been told that Levi's father's name was Solomon, and that he was Josiah's brother, although 28 years younger than Josiah. Also that Solomon was married three times and served in the Revolution. I wrote to Hanover, NH, and sent $10.00 for a search, but they say they have no record of Levi's birth, and because of his birthdate and not knowing when and to where they may have moved, census records do not seem a good source. And I can't afford to bark up too many wrong trees!! Since I live in North Carolina, it is only rarely that I have the opportunity to search New England records myself. Internet data bases I have been able to access on the net have not so far yeilded anything on Solomon in any information I have discovered on Josiah. I have only been working on genealogy for about six months, so still consider myself a newbie, and would appreciate any information or suggestions on how to proceed that you can share with me.
