I got this from someone on the list as to his version of the meaning, name of Bartlett. Any thoughts out there? Maybe there is more than one meaning? Hmmm. Makes one think. I deleted this persons name from the email to me, but maybe a nice hardy debate over the meaning of the great name might bring him to post and throw a few of his own thoughts on the matter to the ring. The Bartlett's that make up my lineage trace directly from France and settled in Sussex having been granted lands by William the Conqueror. Edmund of Ernly, (father of John, Richard and Thomas who emigrated to America) is reputed to have been the fourth son the Barttelot's of Stopham (Source Burke, The Landed Gentry,1939 p. 2550) The family, to this day, spells their name Barttelot or de Bartellot (pronounced Berthelow). Sir Brian is currently the titular head of the family in Stopham, Pulborough, Sussex. While I wouldn't swear to it, I do not recall seeing an Isle of Wight connection. However, there may have been stragglers or maybe some who stayed for the lovely climate. Now I also don't want to disagree with our UK cousins so I will keep an open mind if someone can make a connection to the Isle of Wight. > >---------- >> From: Bartlett Genealogy Foundation <bartlett@bartlettgenealogy.com> >> To: BARTLETT-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com >> Subject: [BARTLETT-ROOTS-L] Bartlett meaning. >> Date: Wednesday, July 01, 1998 1:34 PM >> >> "Bartlett" is a good, honest Norman name, a >> diminutive of "Little Bartholomew" from the Isle of Wight in >> southern England.
