    3. Treasures of Pioneer History By Ashley Bartlett Treasures of Pioneer History: Vol 1 Pioneer Humor Their First Year's Salary Many things happened to the Pioneers they could chuckle over. One of these was the first year's salary for the officers of Uintah County, Utah. Uintah, the Northeastern county of Utah (then it included Daggett), was cut off from Wasatch County in March, 1880. The officers, to serve without salary, were named. My father, Charles Claymore Bartlett, was named clerk, and a quarter of a mile away neighbor, William Ashton, was named assessor and collector. Treasures of Pioneer History: Vol 4 The Pioneer Attorney Charles Stetson Varian Charles Stetson Varian was born in Dayton, Ohio September 10, 1846 a son of Miles and Charlotte Bartlett Varian. He had received a good education in his native state, but when he was twenty years of age he went to California to seek his fortune. In 1867 he went to Nevada, where a year later he became treasurer of Humboldt County. In 1870 he was County Clerk there, and in, 1872, State Senator representing the same section in the Legislature. He had been admitted to the bar in 1871. He was a State Senator in 1874 and from 1876 to 1883, United States Attorney for Nevada. He was elected to the Legislature from Washoe County in 1882 and in the session of the following winter became Speaker of the House. On December 10, 1864 a franchise was granted to Edward M. Morgan, James M. (Matt) Taylor, and William F. Bartlett to operate a ferry one and one-half miles below Cedar Island and build a bridge over Snake River at Black Canyon. Mr. Taylor selected the bridge .rite and in 1,864-65 erected an 83 foot wooden span with solid rock anchorage on both sides. It was a modified Queens truss type. This first bridge to cross Snake River was located 1320 feet south of this spot. A replica of the bridge tops this monument. Bonneville County, Idaho
