Hello everyone, I would like to take this time to welcome all of you to the Bartlett Roots mailing list.. I'm the TILADY@AOL.COM.. otherwise known as Ruth or Ruthie or Hey there... I'm the list owner and newbie at this.. You will probably see this message or a message like it.. for the next day. I'm new at this and I'm just tring to get my feet firmly planted and know what I'm doing.. I live in St. Pete Fla, and in my area alone of 15 mile radius there are THREE GENEALOGY libraries and two Family History Centers.. If any of you are Distant (Bartletts without a family tree to connect to) Cousins, and need a little help in locating your family tree, please email the group or email me privately.. and let's see what I can do or who out there can help.. My line is Robert & Ann Warringer Bartlett of the Lion... Some people want to connect thier line to Robert & Mary Warren Bartlett or Robert & Mary ANN Warren or Warringer Bartlett together.. I have spent many a evening surfing the Web, sending email after email correcting the problem.. I'd be willing to help anyone just please be a little patient... This is all new to me.. Ruth
Hmmmm....now that could be a whole big pot of something different and new. I have started the BARTLETT SOUP DATABASE. This is a database for all the Bartlett lines that have not found the end here in USA. If you have a line you are working on and what to share it on the web site for others to be able to research from and contact you on it this is what you need to do. Send a gedcom or FTM 4.0 or early program to me. Take your tree as far back as you can take it, then the last Bartlett you have, put yourself as their parent and add your email in the area you would normally typ a persons name. This way, people will see your line and email you, and I want have to try and keep up with a 100 different lines. You share, I share...And who knows what could happen. WEeeeeeeeeee, now that the ticket to fun. I think the coffee and sun have gotten to me. LOL BTW...If anyone has a better idea on how to share and contact people of a certain line. Let me know, am always open to new ideas that save me time. LOL Bye Bye for now Ya, Tammy
Thanks Ruth, anything you find would be more than I could ask for. I have just gotten in new info on these Bartletts, so will be sorting thru....But, I can not do it alone and to know people like yourself have been helping means alot. For the rest, lets keep it up. But instead of just writing to me, write it to the whole list. That way everyone gets to see, and does not have to wait for me to try and sort them all out. Not to mention, but I am, People, People, People....Its true, yes I know alot, but by no means know it ALL. And how do you think I learned as much as I have? By sharing with many. Think about it, think about the other different lines....Theres no way I can keep track of it all. Thats why the foundation site is maintained by me, but a vast collection of many. Okay, enough from me. Lets get posting please....Alot of you ask for this list, you have, now use it. I wanna get to the fun stuff. Hello group, I was searching the web last night and came across this web site.. I found three of the 28 Bartlett that are listed on this section of the Confederate Roster of Civil War Soldiers.. I let it start at # 8 and continues to # 74.. Bartletts are listed from # 8 to # 37... Click here: Confederate Rosters: Bartee - Card 8 of 74 Ruth
Hi, I have some great news .. I was doing some summer cleaning house, and I can across a very old folder of information labeled "Library of Congress" Summer of 1940, 42, 48, 53, & 60.. In it is a very old and britle manuscript on Robert Bartlett of the Lion start by a distant relative of mine Lester Bartlett, some of the other items are old papers handwritten and/or what looks like copies from books from the Library of Congress.. One of the papers is from the History of Newburyport, Mass. By a Betsy Longworth Trumbell .. The interesting item it is this and I quote: Josiah Bartlett, signer of the Declaration of Independence was a descendant of the Richard Bartlett of Newburyport, MA. and the Landlord of the "WAYSIDE INN" by the initials of J. P. Bartlett who is represented by Longfellow as the one who first told of the midnight ride of Paul Revere was a Newburyport, Bartlett. She then talkes about Christopher and a Charles of Newburyport, MA and gives names and dates of people and places.. She mentions that this Charles of Newburyport, MA is a relative of the Robert Bartlett who came over on ship Lion. Betsy lists the source of information as a Noah Bartlett of the Charles line as having a very old bible that puts the two families together and then traces Charles family to America and a picks up Robert and his family and list his coming over from England.. Both my Grandfather and Great Uncle Lester came across each other and Lester gave Erlin a copy of his manuscript and what he had already collected.. It seems from what I've been reading much of Lesters information came from traveling the same route as Robert's descendants.. Lester started in the 1939, spending three weeks in and around Northampton, Easthampton, Westhampton, and Southampton, Newburyport, & Boston, Ma.. he then when to Ohio to trace that part of the Bartlett family, then on to New York to trace that part of the Bartlett family When Lester was in MASS, he talks about coming across alot of different Bartlett's and in order to disguish which Bartlett was which.. He just kept collecting information and then he would take it back home and try and put the pieces together.. Lester was a School Teacher and he would get his pupils interested in the History of America by looking into thier own families and learning where they came from and what their ancestors did.. Lester writes down what he found in the Bible and how he went about finding the information.. He mentions a Charles Bartlett & his father father was Robert's father's father's brother... Lester took the information that Betsy had in her book, and proceed to trace the Noah's family to see who had the Bible.. He found a Louisa Bartlett of Southampton, MA.. Charles father was a Samuel, and his father was a Charles.. While Robert's father was William and his father was William brother of Charles from Brighton, England.. Lester proceeds from there to tell about this Louisa and her family and then goes on to talk about Robert and his descendants.. Ruth
. The surname Barclift began with William Bartlett in the 1690s in NC. William and Elizabeth arrived and was given a land grant in 1694, but the name was changed. No one seems to know why, but one reason considered is that they could not read or write, perhaps the scribe inadvertently copied the name wrong, and once having received their patent they were not concerned or were afraid of losing their patent. Anyway it is well documented that the name changed in J.R.B. Hathaway, Winslow and other books of NC. We do not know for sure where William and Elizabeth came from. Most likely I think they came fromAlbemarle NC and Southeast, Va area. Their children William, Thomas and Edward (also referred to as Michael) are the ones who arrived later. I believe these are the ones brought to the area by William Glover.Edward/Michael disappears and no further record has been found. Some tend to think Edward/Micheal is the first Williams Father, as William does not mention him in his will. William, the eldest son married Ann Durant Oct 6, 1698 (daughter of George & Ann). He was appointed Judge and served several years. He had seven children: Thomas b. Sep 25, 1699; William b. Feb 17, 1700-1; John b. Feb 15, 1703-4; Samuel b. May 18, 1706; Joseph b. abt 1709; Joshua b. abt 1712; Mary b. abt 1715. We do not know when William was born but Ann Durant was b. Apr 1, 1681 and he would probably be somewhat older. His brother Thomas also married an Ann Durant abt 1709 (daughter of John & Sarah, grandaughter of (George &Ann). This Ann was born Feb 16, 1688-9. Thomas and Ann had two children: John b. Aug 9, 1711 Elizabeth b. abt 1713. OTHER BARTLETTS in NC. Just do not know where they fit. Craven County Willoughby Bartlett leased land in 1766. William Bartlett bought landin 1790 (This William Bartlett was a mariner and operated a ship out of New Bern, his wife was Elizabeth). He died about 1800. Edward B. Bartlett in Craven County as late as 1886. Thomas Bartlett in Craven County in 1765. Thomas Bartlett was in Pitt County with wife Penelope Paget, daughter of John Paget in 1765. Pitt County was formed from Beaufort in 1760. Craven County marriage records show Edward Bartlett married Lucinda Kind January 2, 1791 and William Bartlett married Euphemie Jones on December 24 1782. In Beaufort County, Thomas Bartlett bought land in 1779. There was a Bartlett whose first name has been spelled many ways I am sure on it spelling: Pasque, Pasco, Pashel... there were a senior and a junior Pasque Bartlett. Pasque, Sr. sold land in Beaufort in 1738. He was on a list of freeholders in Hyde County in 1715. Wills in Beaufort County show that a John Padgett in 1785 named Ann, Thomas, Benjamin, and Edward Bartlett in his will. This is the will I was refferring to in earlier posts. He does call any of them family members, but is probably the same John Padget mentioned above being the father-in-law of Thomas Bartlett; perhaps these were grandchildren? Johnston County formed from Craven in 1746. William Bartlett bought items at an estate sale in 1804. And I thought those Yankee Bartlett Lines made my head spin. I have just started this gathering info on these Bartletts. I need help, as I think many of these Bartletts have children, grandchildren that move even futher down south. And this is what I think maybe where many southern Bartletts stem from. I also believe these may sooner or later connect with the Va. Bartletts such as Thomas of Spots etc... Any ideas? I could really use some help on these. Tammy
Family secrets and legends are a great tool and starting point. People who have come to me and say" I heard that my Bartletts were related to Josiah Bartlett", were 8 out of 10 truely related. So never take the word of that old family story, but always keep it real close in mind. TammyAnn

Hello, If any of you by accident get an unsubscribe to the email list.. Please let me know... I'm finding because of an error of mind when setting the list up that a couple of you were on the list two or three times and I need to take the extra addresses out.. Here's another... Illegitimate Ancestors - Helpful Hints Sooner or later, most genealogists stumble across an illegitimate ancestor. Old parish registers often reveal this information, but there were various ways of expressing illegitimacy, some of them in Latin. In Latin, "ignotus" means unknown. So records sometimes say, "nomine ignoto" meaning the father's name was unknown. "Filius Populi" means son of the people. This reference in English records often covers cases where the father was known to be a local man, but might be one of two men. It also can mean that the father was anybody's guess. "Filius nullius" means son of none. This terminology was used in cases where the father was a stranger (in that parish) or the mother couldn't or wouldn't say who he was. There are other tiny clues to be found in parish records, so it's important to copy the references exactly. For example, if you find a record that reads something like, "Johannes filius Mariae Jones et reputat (ur) de Johanni Smith," it translates to John, son of Mary Jones and by repute of John Smith. What that means is that the father either admitted paternity or that paternity had been proved. But if the record read, "Johannes filius Mariae Jones et imputat de Johanni Smith," it means the mother claimed the father was John Smith, but he wouldn't admit it or else the case hadn't been settled. Other terms you may run into are "ut fertur" meaning as it is said (or believe it if you like), and "dictus" or "p(rea) dictus", meaning the said, aforesaid (man). "Voctus" means called or known as. A common way of showing illegitimate paternity in English records was to give a child his father's full name and his mother's surname. The idea was that if the couple married later, the mother's surname would be dropped. Knowing about the use of double surnames for illegitimate children is very useful to genealogists, but in genealogy, there are always exceptions. In London, Lancashire, Yorkshire and among non-conformists, the use of a complimentary second surname from the mother's family, the pastor or a rich uncle, came into vogue in the early 1800s and again later in the Victorian period. If you discover a reference to John Jones Smith, and it occurs anywhere but in a recognized gentry family before about 1840 in England, it should alert you to the possibility of illegitimacy, but remember the exceptions. In the late 19th century the English sometimes used a hyphenated surname such as Armstrong-Jones, but for reasons of ancestral snobbery, not illegitimacy. So when researching English records, remember this popularity of double surnames in particular localities and time periods for other reasons than the marital status of a child's parents before assuming an ancestor was illegitimate. >From the Bureau Co. The original arms of the family in England were sable, three sinister falconers' gloves, argent, arranged triangularly, two above, one below, pendent, bands around the wrists, and tassels, golden. Near the close of the fifteenth century, one of the crests, the castle, was granted to John BARTTELOT who in command of the Sussex troops, captured the castle of Fontenoy, in France. In the sixteenth century, the swan crest was introduced to commemorate the right of the family to keep swans upon the River Arun, a right granted by William the Conqueror. The estates, consisting of several thousands of acres of land, granted more than eight hundred years ago have descended in the male line of the BARTTELOT family to the present day. The present head of the family in England is Sir Walter George BARTTELOT, who owns and occupies the ancestral estate. His father, Sir Walter Balfour BARTTELOT, was killed in the Boer War. His younger and only brother, Commander BARTTELOT of the Pathfinder, was killed 9th September, 1914, in the present European war. His ship was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine in the British Channel.
