    1. [BARTLETT-ROOTS-L] Bartlett Coat of Arms
    2. I went to the TN State Library & Archives today and found some information that I thought some of you might find rather interesting. Tammy, you might want to add this to your website cause it's about the coat of arms you already have there. Family of Bartlett Coat of Arms ARMS: Sable, three falconers gloves, pendent, argent, banded and tassled. CREST: A swan couchant, argent, wings - in dorso. MOTTO: Meaning mature, and all in good time. AUTHORITY: Croziers "General Armory," 1904 edition, page 19. Burkes "General Amory", 1878 edition, page 54, arms only. Burkes Visitations, 1854 edition. TINCTURES, as shown by discription: The shield is of black. The gloves are of silver, with gold tassles. Some lines band the gloves with gold. The swan is silver. The wreath, on which the crest rests is of alternate twists of black and silver. The print is reproduced exactly from an old English bookplace, made circa 1760. Decorative features, apart from the Arms, Crest and Motto, are optional. Usually the frame is of bronze, or brown, green leaves, flowers of red, yellow and blue. In Burkes "Visitations," the connection between the English and American lines are acknowledged. Martin and Allardyce, By George C. Martin Martin and Allardyce of San Antonio, TX in Bexar Co., took an oath that the insignia described above appears in the Published Heraldic Authority mentioned above. Given under my hand and seal of office, this is the 25th day of Nov. A.D. 1949. Nellie Dusbeck, Notary Public The Coat of Arms, of the ancient family of BARTLETT: ARMS: Sable, three sinister falconers gloves, argent, arranged triangularly, two above, one below the pendant, bands around the writs, and tassles golden CREST: A swan argent, couched with her wings expanded, in Dorso, a castle with three turretts, sable. MOTTO: Matura - "In Good Time." I found all this in Roots and Branches by Juanita Bartlett-Newton Willis. This book also includes information on Robert Bartlett of Plymouth (Newton Connection), including family charts, the Newton Mayflower Connection and some Bartlett Mayflower Connections. I also found Ancestry and Descendants of Samuel Bartlett and Lucy Jenkins by Edith B. Sumner and Forefathers and Descendants of Willard and Genevieve Wilson Bartlett and of Allied Families by Moulton, McGehee, and Endress, copyright 1952, printed by The Anthoensen Press, Portland, ME. This last book includes information on Richard of Newbury and ancestral lines of Willard Bartlett, Genevieve Wilson Bartlett, Jane Moulton Bartlett, Louise McGehee Bartlett, and Elizabeth Endress Bartlett. If anyone thinks there might be some information in any of these books that might help you with your line I'll be happy to look through them more thoroughly. Just let me know. 1. [BARTLETT-ROOTS-L] Jonathan Bartlett and Lydia Chase
    2. My Bartlett ancestry goes back to Jonathan Bartlett, born about 1714 in Haverhill, MA, and died before Nov. 13, 1794 in Balltown, ME. His parents are unknown and the date and place of his birth are unconfirmed. This illusive man has been very troublesome, and now I am having a hard time confirming who his wife was. I have been told by close cousins also researching their BARTLETT roots that he married Lydia Chase, daughter of Abraham and Ruth (Morse) Chase, about 1742 in Plaistow, New Hampshire. They had ten children, of which Caleb (born May 11, 1755 in Plaistow, NH, married Molly Cooper) is my line. While I have good reason to believe she WAS his wife, I cannot prove it. The book, "Seven Generations of the Descendents of Thomas and Aquila Chase", by John Carroll Chase and George Walter Chamberlain (1928) gives Jonathan as the husband of Lydia. However, a Jonathan Bartlett is also given as the husband of Lydia's sister, Elizabeth (page 52). Is this the same Jonathan? I have also found other people that say that Jonathan Bartlett (with the same birth and death dates, also of unknown parentage) was married to a Hannah Harriman. Does anyone have the answers to the life of this mysterious man? I would love to hear from anyone that shares my line. Names also included are COOPER, SKILLIAN, PLATTS, HALE, HUTCHINSON, HARRIMAN (but not the Hannah mentioned above), JEWETT, and on and on if Lydia Chase was indeed his wife and the mother of Caleb. My Bartletts settled in Bartlett's Mills, New Brunswick, Canada after the Revolutionary War .(Especially like to hear from other New Brunswick Bartletts, surnames:ROGERSON, HAY, LITTLE, NUTTER, LINTON) _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. 2. I don't have an answer to your question, but I do have a John Bartlet that married a Sarah Knight in 1660. Maybe we can make a difference connection. I am looking for my ancestors, Thomas Bartlett born in MA in 1805 who married Caroline Deering born in 1806 in Portland, ME. (or that area) They were married in Portland, ME on Dec 4. 1827. Thomas was living in Eastport, ME at the time and she was living in Portland, ME. They lived in Maine for a while, having six of their seven children there and then moved to Washington, D.C. in about 1846. Does this match any information your mother has? If so I would like to correspond with her. Debbie Bartlett aka Kauaijim

PART III BIOGRAPHIES OF SONS OF VERMONT In his boyhood he learned the trade of his father, a leading manufacturer of furniture and sleighs. His mechanical tastes led him into an adventure, when seventeen years old, which proved a serious episode in his life, and changed his future plans. For diversion he made a printing press, though he had never seen one, and printed a paper called the Autumn Leaf. After three issues he made a larger press, got more type, and launched the Enterprise, with the help of a few boys. The editors were the late Rev. G. V. Maxham and Prof. Truman H. Safford, then in their teens, the latter then a prodigy in mathematics. This was printed one year, about one thousand circulation. It was succeeded by The Nonpareil, but unable alone to carry the undertaking, he arranged its printing in Hartford, Conn., with an edition at both places. It was edited by D. W. Bartlett, since noted in journalism, and W. H. Burleigh. It was a beautiful monthly quarto, its writers eminent in literature, and had a large circulation, but lived only one year, ending 1850. This interesting period of his life is narrated to make a record of the press of Randolph. Men of Vermont: An Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters and Sons of Vermont.
