Tammy kindly posted some Bartlett marriage records from early-day Texas that included these three marriages: >Bartlett, Louisa married Neil, Jno. C. on 06 Sep 1838 in Washington County, >Texas >Bartlett, Nancy married Crawford, Jos. W. on 26 Sep 1838 in Washington >County, Texas >Bartlett, Joseph married Estes, Amanda M. on 15 Apr 1839 in Washington >County, Texas Nancy's contains an error. She married Joseph W. Crawford on 6 Sep 1838 in a double wedding with her sister, Louisa (whose entry is just above Nancy's). The cite for both their records is Washington County, Texas Marriage Records, book 1, page 3. As for the marriage of Joseph Callaway Bartlett and Amanda Monroe Estes, the Washington County Marriage Records, at book 1, page 4, does not give the marriage date but states that the license was issued on the 15th and was returned on 16 Apr 1839. We have two family bibles that record this marriage (one was owned by Joe's parents, Jesse Bartlett and Frances Callaway Bartlett, the other by one of Joe's sons, Jesse Marshall Bartlett (J.M.), and J.M.'s wife, Mary Hester Clopton Bartlett (Mollie)), and both give 18 Apr 1839 as the marriage date. In the county marriage book, Amanda's name appears to be spelled Estis, but we believe it was usually spelled Estes, and "Estes" appears on one or two occasions as a middle name for descendants. Joseph Callaway Bartlett and Amanda Monroe Estes were my g-g-grandparents. Nancy and Louisa were two of Joe's sisters. Nancy died in a yellow fever epidemic in Galveston and apparently had only the one husband. Louisa was married three times. I would like to hear from anyone connected to or having an interest in this family. Some of you may be interested to know that Texas was not a state or territory of the U.S. at that time but was the Republic of Texas (from 1836 to 1845). Thanks for posting this information, Tammy. The Bartlett Roots List was set up for the FUN and Enjoyment of the Surname "BARTLETT" Hi Marilyn, I would agree with you 100%, but Ancestry is charging for information found in Books, and on Film available through out the US at any public Library.... If anything Ancestry would be the one who is wrong by taking public records ( which are free) and charging for it..But as I understand they charge money for the sole purpose of being able to keep the site available on-line..And Thats a plus for shut ins like my mother.. Tammy, Your a Genius.. Two of your stories that you posted to the list tonight, were of my line and a marriage connection line.. Thanks.. Ruth
I saw both of these when I was looking through the records at the Family History Center. The first Wm. is married to the wrong person. My Wm. married a Lula Schmitt in KY. The 2nd. Wm. was born too early. I'm beginning to feel that my Wm. just suddenly surfaced in Paducah, KY in the early 1900's. I feel like I'm missing something or over looking something. If this first Wm. did marry this Louisa Welch it would've had to have been before he got to Paducah and then she would've had to have died or something. And then he could've married Lula Schmitt. Oh, I just don't know. Thanks for your help. Dorjo, I have found two Nathaniel's in my research yesterday.. I'm putting another package to tammy so she can post the information.. Now.. The Nicholas I found says he was Born Nicholas: B 1620 Fisherman escaped from Maine after serving Prince Charles I for eight years, the last three on Prince Charles I's guard without pay. When Charles was restored he went back to England, but came back again to America. The Nathaniel of Dartmouth in 1662 ( The paper goes on and on and on.. , it mentions a wife, but I can't find her name or the names of children.. ( He and his wife had 10 children and settled on the river in Maine) .. I have a couple of other articles I got out of books that mentioned this Nathaniel and another Nathaniel.. I wish I could help more, once Tammy gets all of this, I know that she will be posting all of this to the list and then post to the web site after wards.. Ruth

Dear List, To let everyone know about the international connections the Bartlett Genealogy Foundation and Bartlett-Root-L has I am happy and proud to send a copy of the following letter to be shared with you. I am so truely amazed at the growth we all are stepping into. And persons we are able to all affect with our sharing and growing. Mr. Thomas Bartlett is one person I am sure we will all be hearing more from. I have deleted some personal information from the letter as not to invade on Mr. Bartlett and his vacation time. Dear Tammy Bartlett, I used to be known as Tommy Bartlett, so I was very pleased to get your message. The answer to all your questions is: I have been pursuring Bartlett genealogy for about two decades and am delighted to know that there is not only a Bartlett Genealogy Foundation but also a website. I am in the MA area on a short visit right now, but I have lived in Australia for two years. I have found that there are quite a number of Bartletts in Australia, and some of them are very much interested in family genealogy. My grandmother, Genevieve Wilson Bartlett, was author of "Forefathers and Descendants of Willard and Genevieve Wilson Bartlett", in which she compiled alot of material. It's a useful reference source for the American generations since Richard arrived in Boston in 1634, but I have come to think that she misunderstood Richard's English ancestry. When I was working in England during 1975-76, I got some further information on this subject, and became aware of a book called "Our Family Surname", by Rev. Grosvenor Bartelot (I think I have spelled his surname here as he does in the book). Grosvenor says that Richard came from Dorset, if I remember correctly, and I have received a letter from an elderly Bartlett in Australia who has studied the matter and comes to the same conclusion. So I am particularly eager to know what late 16th century records exist to prove Richard's birth and baptism in the 1590s in Fordington, Dorset. If you know anything about that, I'd appreciate it very much if you could pass on the information to me. One reason I'm so pleased to know about the Foundation and the website is that I have only one child, a daughter, so I hope that she and her putative future children, who will presumably not be surnamed Bartlett, will have a clear understanding of their Bartlett background and ongoing affiliations worldwide. I look forward to exploring the website and to remaining in contact with you and other people interested in this subject. With best regards, Thomas Bartlett Australia
