Hello, I am happy to report that my great great grandfather was not a horse thief!!! He served almost 5 years of a 15 yr. sentence (thank goodness they didn't hang him or I wouldn't be here!!) in prison for horse theft and was granted a pardon. Most of the upright citizens of Madisonville, Texas as well as the original jurors and district attorney all signed a petition for Gov Hogg to pardon him. (Including Visors and Manning) I received the pardon papers in the mail today which also included the trial manuscripts of what happened that night and the signed petitions by all the townspeople as well as several letters from some DA's and judges in Madison and Houston counties. I will get them transcribed as soon as possible. At least now future researchers will know that he was framed for horse theft and was not a horse thief. I only wish my grandfather was still alive to know this, as I think he always felt it was a tarnish to our Barrett name. BTW: Steven was the son of Stephen Reding Barrett who was son of John Whitten Barrett son of David Barrett son of Reuben Barrett. Today was a good research Day!!!! Hugs to all, Janet
Janet, Great job,I am so happy for you.I didn't realize until I just read this that it was your gg grandfather who was accused of that crime. Dad told us the family stood behind him and always knew he was innocent. I know for a fact after tracing our family there may have been a few black sheep but hard to believe there were criminals. The Barrett's that I have come to know were loving, hard working, honest Christians who loved their country. Hopefully others will see there is light beyond that road block and sharing the smallest fact may turn into a great discovery. Janet, Mister Hubert Barrett always said he was not guilty and that he was framed (was his words) Roy Barrett was researching and came on to this info and we were all setting at the table when Roy made his statement. WOW!!! Mister Hubert and Grand Grand got mad and told him, "Not true and Grand Grand got her paddle, (that always was close to the table) and said " Don't you ever say that again." When Roy was visiting my Roy we got to talking about that and so glad you cleared this up. Thank you for getting the info. Can't wait to forward this to my kids.
