    3. Karen, Donna, Jim and List, I was asking this same question about 10 years ago. Arthur and Mary Caradine Barrett of Neshoba County, MS, named a son "Massey J." Probably named for the relatives in SC. Born in MS in 1838, appears Massey J. (M.J.) Barrett died in the Civil War; his Civil War record is incomplete. "Barrett, M.J., Private, Co. C "Quitman Southrons," Leake Co, mustered into State service at Carthage July 21, 1861. Mustered into Confederate service at Grenada August 24, 1861." Source: H. Grady Howell, Jr., GOING TO MEET THE YANKEES, Chickasaw Bayou Press, Jackson, MS:1981, p. 318. Ann? Do you have anything else? However, David Jackson and Mary Barrett named a son Massey Arrowsmith Jackson, and a long line of Massey Jacksons ensued. Bob Jackson says that a person by the name of Massey Arrowsmith lived in Greenville, and that tracing his origin might be a clue as to where the Jacksons and/or Barretts moved from. In this case, Massey probably originated as a surname. I might also say this: Massey is also a nickname for "Matthew." It derives from a childish pronunciation of "Matty."
