Ann, Thank you for your advice and information. I haven't yet, but have any Barrett researchers attempted to ascertain who the caretakers/superintendents are of some of the purported cemeteries that Joseph is alleged to be interred. If so, do those caretakers/superintendents have the old cemetery records in their possession that may reveal those interred but with markers that are lost to the ages? I have had [a little] success over the years uncovering the individuals that hold these records and have found an ancestor or two that way. Then again, they may be buried under a tree on their old property and forever lost....... I will use the information you have given us .....you never know what kind of clue is hidden there. Thank you. R/Steven ........................................... If it existed in Neshoba County I think someone would be aware by now for many have looked. He and Rutha lived in the vicinity of "Center." My files contain Joseph's land deed description which was in Township 11North-Range 13East, Choctaw Baseline and Meridian, Section 9. Can't give a complete description without pulling out more papers. Not important anyway. The East Half of the Southwest Quarter of Section Nine, T11-R13E (approx 80 acres) went to Rutha's son William M. Moore in a Deed of Conveyance, 27 July 1855 (Deed Bk J-310, Neshoba Co, MS). The Neshoba County sheriff on 31 Dec 1853 auctioned this land to highest bidder at the Court House door, WILLIAM M. MOORE, son of Rutha Cabaniss Moore Barrett. I think this indicates that Rutha died in 1853. David Barrett was her Administrator. Later William M. and wife sold the land to Albert Kelly. Some comments by Rev. John S. Moore, Rutha's descendant follow:Letter to Ann T. Lila, August 17, l993. "Since I was 19 I have been researching my family history and have not been able to go before William M. Moore and his mother. Now I am 74 and still searching. ... in many courthouses on the east coast, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi and Oklahoma. ... Then she married Joseph Barrett on Nov. 7, 1826 [lic. Nov 6] and soon afterward they moved to Neshoba County, MS. ... William M. Moore moved to Yazoo Coounty, MS and from there he is said to have moved to Oklahoma Territory to claim Indian rights to land ... Mary Elizabeth Moore visited her daughter in Anding, MS about 1887. ... She died while she was at her daughter's and was buried at Concord Baptist Church Cemetery. The dates on her tombstone a! re: 'b. May 11, 1829, d. August 26, 1887.'" ... "So far as I know, RUTHA BARRETT was buried in Neshoba County. She died a good while before the family moved to Yazoo County. I would presume Rutha was buried in Neshoba alongside Joseph Barrett." "I have searched the Barrett lines for years and have helped many of those researching this family, but have not been able to pinpoint Mary Elizabeth Barrett's parents." Rev. Moore mentioned in one letter to Ann Lila that he had been to Ray Burton's store at Center searching for info on Joseph and Rutha. Ann learned nothing from Ray or his wife Charlotte when she went there and talked with them later about 1994/95. They suggested seeing Mr. Cheatham who is now deceased. My opinion is that Joseph was buried not too far from his homeplace. Remember not many cemeteries (if any) existed in 1840 for white settlers of Neshoba County. Graves were generally marked by native rock or whatever was available. If any of you ! discover a grave location for Joseph or Rutha, please let me know for I would really like to know. I planned to take by boots with me, but didn't realize I'd need off-the-road equipment to get there.....thanks for the warning! I'd appreciate securing any photos or data of the cemetery you have....
