He was in the 45th infantry division Co. G as was his uncle Jeremiah Barrett. His father and Jeremiah's brother was Lawrence Barrett who raised horses and sold some to Union soldiers during the war. One of those horses was shot from under a Union officer at the Battle of Stones River. I understand that Lawrence was a farmer who also made many items out of cedar including baskets and even coffins. Apparently he was murdered by an unknown assailant when struck over the head after dinner one night by a singletree. Lawrence's mother was a Betsy Hancock Barrett who brought her 7 children into Wilson Co TN in March of 1831. It has been said that she may have been Cherokee or part Cherokee and came west from North Carolina as a result of the Removal Act of 1830. Her husband John Alston was a fur trader who operated a business on the Mississippi. He ei! ther died of Cholera on a flatboat by New Orleans or was killed by the great wheel of a paddle boat when he accidentally fell into the river. I would love to learn more about this Barrett line including where they might have originated from. I understand that you might have additional information that you would be willing to share. If this is the case, please feel free to email me at this address. Thank you for your consideration.
